Why is Don't Starve Elsewhere being called an "all-new" game?
Even Don't Starve Together is called a "standalone multiplayer expansion" for singleplayer Don't Starve in the official description on the Steam page, despite being a separate game altogether that just copies a lot of content over from singleplayer Don't Starve.
Looking at the actual gameplay footage shown so far, it seems like Elsewhere really is just an expansion for Don't Starve Together. The changes in elevation are a visual trick; it's the same single flat plane, but with borders that restrict movement where the "elevation" changes, which makes them functionally very similar to the borders formed by bodies of water in other versions of Don't Starve.
Clearly a lot of content and mechanics are also taken straight from other versions of Don't Starve.
I've seen speculation that the code is going to be completely rewritten to get away from the ten years of bugs and mistakes that have accumulated in DST's code - but so far I haven't seen anything at all to support such claims.
What new features will Elsewhere have that couldn't have just been added to Don't Starve Together?

i dont want them to update DST, i want them to make something new, DST is too bloated with content and design choices from 10 years ago, character balance is all over the place (not character vs character, but character vs the world) and the game´s way of progression is killing a bunch of bosses, doing dumb quests and waiting seasons to change to kill seasonal bosses (crystal deerclops, armored bearger)

DSE is new and is an opportunity to make a good base for a long term dont starve game

Oh I agree, that's what they should do, and they are calling this an "all-new" game.
But talk is cheap, and what they've actually shown us looks like Don't Starve Together with a few mods. I'm not getting my hopes up over that.

I dunno, I personally think the introduction of elevation is a monumental addition that just wasn't possible in Don't Starve Together. :wilson_curious:

I really appreciate that Klei is starting fresh with a new game so that those who enjoy the gameplay loop of DST can continue, and those looking for a new experience will have Elsewhere to look forward to! (the new environment and mechanics such as the fog look to bring so much depth!!)

While *some* of these could have theoretically been additions to DST, I think it's a very healthy thing for the evolution of the franchise to explore a new setting. :wilson_love:

Mods are unofficial gameplay content made by the hundreds of thousands of community members and is not something that is created by the small group of developers who actually worked on the game (the names that roll by in the pretty credits part of the game)

If we were going to count mods there may as well NEVER be an Elder Scrolls 6 because Skyrim has been modded to all heck and back… what could they POSSIBLY add that feels “NEW” that hasn’t been done already?

This is your situation with DSE.. you don’t feel like it’s anything “New” to you: Because Unofficial Mods have spoiled you.

I didn't say there was nothing new. Clearly there's some new content. Elsewhere would be fine as a DLC.
But that's not what it is. They're calling it an "all-new" game.
That's why I'm confused. You even seem to think they're just adding on to DST, but Klei says this is a separate game altogether.

You’re saying this after seeing a minute and a half of gameplay and nothing else

I know, right? That video clip contained enough information for most of the people here to conclude that Klei made an entire game with a brand new codebase completely from scratch, yet here I am asking simple questions like: What new features will Elsewhere have that couldn't have just been added to Don't Starve Together? I must've missed something, I'll watch it again.

I guess not many new features, especially not gameplay.  The big feature I expect is that the doors that lead to the caves are going to be connected without a loading screen to the forest.

I doubt it will be entirely from scratch.  For the sake of familiarity, time, and modders, the scripts I predict will be similar.  But the graphics engine looks like it will more sophisticated and know how to keep the view unobstructed by the tall objects in the foreground.  Like a successful attempt to make "cave walls" if you remember that.

But Elsewhere has the same sails as Hamlet did or Shipwrecked.  It's a chance to do a new theme with new seasons and events.  A whole new word in a package.  That what excites me.  I think that the live service model just doesn't work when most the fun in Don't Starve I think is learning about the world and ecosystem and being crafty with how to exploit it to do something.  When content updates come in small pieces, I don't get excited, especially because I will read the patch notes :p

For many of the same reason DST isn't just bundled into the original Don't Starve, I'd imagine. They had to do a lot of foundational work/reworking to get multiplayer in.
We're seeing the same here, likely for a mix of elevation and Hamlet-like dungeons which, if I'm not mistaken, has been said to not be possible to add to DST.

But other than code stuff, it's literally all-new. Like you said, DST is just Don't Starve's with multiplayer and new content on top.
Elsewhere is an entirely new local with an entirely new artstyle. Many of us are still waiting to see if things like Pigmen or Nightmare Creatures will even exist!

Don't Starve.
Don't Starve.
Очевидно, что многие элементы и механики взяты из других версий Don't Starve.
Don't Starve Together?

Is there a lot of content copied? The DST adapted 99.999% of the content from DS and RoG and adapted it.

Elsewhere at least doesn't look like an impudent copy paste... Togehter should have been like this, not just a carbon copy with updates and multiplayer...

Well. Elsewhere is 99% is unique.
