  2. 2. Should Warly have more chef foods?

    • Yes, only 11 is a crime for a "wandering chef", more special foods like jelly or the grim galette, add a dish that uses gloom berries
      39
    • Yes, but making them special versions of already existing foods, like meatball materials in a chef pot makes gormet meatballs/meat cubes
      13
    • 11 is fine, but make his regular foods better, (moqueca / bone broth are somewhat expensive for meaty stew adjacents)
      5
    • 11 is fine, only add foods everyone can make, don't lock more fun foods behind 1 character.

Just wanted to see what people like about Warly the most. I personally will only play Warly because I like his personality/want to swap for spices. His gameplay for me is pretty boring, you're not really too different from Wilson aside from a large stomach and the access to spices and jelly. (which you can hand to other players and they can use it more effectively than you ever could)

I'm a passionate home cook in real life, and I love the extra care and thought I can put into keeping Warly fed. I really enjoy engaging with the different food sources in game, branching out into things like the fig dishes or barnacle dishes for an added goal/challenge. I love the character fantasy of preparing a bunch of different meals early game from the same basic ingredients, rotating Butter Muffins, Spicy Chili, even some Red Cap Ratatouille and Fist Full o'Jams in between Meatballs. Plus, I find it really satisfying to puzzle together the meals I have access to from memory alone.

Warly is one of my 3 most played characters and I rarely make his dishes because they unfortunately suck. So as it is right now I mostly just play him for his downside, sprite, quotes, and voice. Hopefully his skill tree can make his upsides more prevalent (and perhaps improve the downside like suggested in that one Guille thread) by doing things like letting him get 2x duration from any buffs he receives by eating food, and adding a couple of new dishes & spices.

I love about him that he has one of the few downsides that changes how you approach certain content pieces.

Also he rewards interacting with more content like fishing, killing frogs from ponds for the wetness dish, farming barnacles, farming veggies, etc

His upsides only comes from your work instead of being free powers

For a long term world is my favourite character and the only i can really think to play despite not having a skill tree. Even updates characters feel less fun than him, he has no perk that make certain tool or content redundant while him doesn't make the game a cake walk since day1

I hope his skill tree doesn't ruin anything about what makes him the best designed character in terms of enjoying most content while having a slight challenge

Always feels nice to have a breath of fresh air when I'm tired of having meatballs and honey hams every day.

I like characters with downsides impactful enough to pull me out of the average gameplay loop.

Plus, hes got some depth to his character and thats another perk to me.

I love being able to cook things where I normally wouldn't bother, like making lichen and monster meat into meatballs, or utilising all the various sailing food sources right on the sea, it's fun to have to diversify your meals a bit more too, and I love the idea of unique dishes and spices a lot, but I do hope we'll get a bunch more of those unique dishes though. The only 2 unique dishes I actually like are glowberry and rain protection, because they are accessible and can be made on the go, and provide a neat little benefit. I do think Warly getting extended duration on his own buffs would make some dishes like temperature ones potentially more attractive, but I also think he just needs some more useful dishes in general.(At the same, I do kinda hope we get some silly ones like grim galette too, give us more unhinged foods! :D)

since the topic's brought up, time to tell this old story again.

Spoiler

i took care of my own grandmother in her last years and she passed two years back.

she taught me so much and i can only hope i have begun to honor her memory now that I am at work.

Life has grown large around the grief since, but tomorrow it shall be her birthday. It would have been her one hundred and fifth. I'll be paying her a visit.

thus, i play as Warly as a homage to my own memories of my own grandmother.

I like him because it fills me with satisfaction to give damage buffs to my friends who play Wolfgang/Wigfrid/Wanda, and honey buffs to my friend who plays Woodie. I just like being able to support the team by providing meaningful buffs.

Also I like how the team gets access to dishes they normally wouldn't, just because the nature of having a Warly promotes having a farm. No one usually considers making vegetable stinger, but since the farms are up, it's an option. (This one isn't exclusive to Warly, but it's still cool nonetheless)

I like the fact that he buffs other characters but there is not much variety in his dishes, he has straight forward metas. however this tends to be the case for most characters. wendys potions for example or wx-78 circuits are kinda the same. they have potential to be more interesting but don't hit the mark. besides that, the only other bad thing about him is that he does nothing else besides buff allies.

Having the highest possible no-swap damage in singleplayer while also being an expensive and interesting support is a unique role.

Since yes, pepper chaufraud is eatable by anyone, but if you want to purely play a single character on a solo world only he has this power spike, and its enormous.

One thing I like about Warly is moqueca
Moqueca is a LOT easier to make than people think

this was my go to dish as Warly, it has insane value and all you have to do is catch wobsters which dont require any bait and dont require sailing,

Warly is the definition of unrealized potential, this will be one of the most important skill trees for me

I really enjoy Warly's portable crockpot, and just Warly himself. That portable crockpot makes for such a great travel companion, and it's so cozy!!

I only wish there were more dishes for the wandering Warly to make, for having a portable crockpot he sure feels like he's stuck cooking and farming at base for a big part of his supporting kit being the spices. ( a biome update with more wild veggies would be so, so nice...)

The idea of gourmet variants of foods sounds quite nice actually! If they could grant more sanity and health I feel like that could be a nice support option!

His Portable crockpot isn't necessarily as useful as it is just much more nicer to use than normal crockpots(it's kind of a vibe to put it down to cook while going off killing someone or chopping trees).

I don't think Warly needs more specialty dishes as much as he needs... anything else. It simply feels like a wasted effort to make them exclusive to Warly, when none of them are actually good enough to justify playing Warly due to very few of them being easily available before you progress to being able to kill Bee Queen, or having any perks another character can't provide. it is simply preferable for a lot of people to Swap and bundle them anyway. Giving Warly 22 total Special dishes won't address any of his issues, even if some of them would be of the "activate godmode for 3 minutes" kind.

One of the challenges with updating him would be maintaining a valid level of supportive coherence while also adding barely enough greed to his kit that he has value in spite of mostly being support driven.

I've spitballed things like him being able to train a number of helpful kitchen staff (Which help maintain/defend the kitchen while also having various utilities, like helping you row at sea, negotiate with plant monsters, or fertilizing plants on occasion,) being the master of hambats (With seasoning the bats for powerful combat bonuses,) having unique ways to gather food, and volt goat taming as just things that might give him a little long term value.
Strong stuff which makes him persisting and surviving stay valuable (As you need him for goat interactions/keeping the kitchen staff from reverting to just being bunnies and pigs,) but also keeping him about food and support (As there is usually something he can share with others in a weaker form.)
