If character swapping is the problem, then nerf character swapping

Recommended Posts

Stop targeting characters synergies and characters interactions. Why there are so many character exclusives items nowadays that totally unusable for other characters.

Make character swapping harder.
Give it 20 days cooldown.

In DS character swapping wasnt an issue because you have to complete an adventure mode twice to swap character.
In DST you only have to mine a rock and a statue.

Consider how OP character swapping is - Reset skill tree, synergy abuse, heal you to full, give you full set of starter items... I think it time to address the core problem of this situation.

Edit: My idea for making it actually harder: Rare toy figure of character drops from bosses, chest, tumbleweeds,... and you need to have specific toy of a character to swap to that exact character.

Both of these materials are easily farmable late game but rare early game. Those only stop people from first ever character swapping when resources is scarce, which, first character swapping is sometime legit (Player try new character and they didnt fit for them) 20 days cooldown is more fair since everyone can swap after 20 days of trying a character, instead of just swap for crafting stuffs.

This isn't even a problem to begin with.

Then why klei keep making more and more character crafts exclusives?

There were two ways to handle the issue which was A. Nerf celestial portal B. Buff "pick and swap" characters to have reasons to play them long term. It seems the devs picked B and honestly they are doing an awesome job with it.

Seeing the direction that they are going with skill trees, I'm not as against character swapping as I once was. It makes me eager to see what creative direction they will be taking Warly and Wickerbottom.

The "problem" is that there's a large number of people who can't bring themselves to play in a fun way because they have to play in a more optimal or efficient way. No reason to nerf gameplay just to appeal to that set of players.

This isn't true. Character swapping could also be accomplished via world hopping, which was especially relevant if you had linked worlds (which, at this point, why would you play DS and not merge your worlds?) as only the world you hopped would be destroyed and the other worlds would remain intact. Swapping in DS is hardly more difficult compared to DST and especially if you know what you're doing.

Which delete world, and you can only keep some items with you. You can combine that with world merge for cheaper price, yes, but you still have to pay the price half of your world deleted, or 1/3 of them if you merge 3 worlds.
You can swap character at the start for no cost, yes, using dispose-able world, but after playing for awhile, if you start building stuff in that new word, you can no longer have cheap price of character swap.

Im not saying that the "only way". Im just saying that is how you can do it. And it's the only way to do it without cheat if you want to swap character without world deletion draw back.

the only people who think character swapping is a problem are noobs and the really loud minority of players who shout “uncompromising wilderness survival game” every time anything gets added to the game

They buff winona so much that other cant put robot back on ground if they accidentally picked it.
Their option B is not "buff" but "make pick and swap character ability exclusive"

Im not against buff weak character, im against every single thing is so exclusive that require the character to be useable.
Klei dev use the reason: "If we want winona to be strong, all her ability has to be exclusive" in their dev stream about reveal winona update.

Nobody swaps character to beat the game. And if there are any, is people that needs 1000 days to reach that point of the game

neither do i. It wasnt a problem for me. Until dev decide it was a problem and all new content are character exclusive and all world i join/play, 30% of the chest are filled with character excusive items that totally useless because i dont play that exact character.

Which is why the title is "If character swapping is a problem".

What kind of character exclusive items do you think need to be given to every character? 90% of the time those things are character exclusive since it’s tied to how a character functions and their perks, typically anything that can be shared is because it’s equipment anyone can use (even if the original character uses it better, Wigfrid woodie and wormwood are the three main examples and share items just fine)

I was not so sure about it at the time, but the option they chose worked on me, before I would just change into her when I wanted to craft her things, which was mostly the catapults, now I feel like playing her - something I never thought would happen if someone asked me about it some years ago.

I think its main ability still should be exclusive, but each of them should have extra use for everyone.

Wanda's clocks should show time in cave.
People should be able to reinstall winbot.
Mourning glory can be used to befriend ghost for all characters.
Biodata can be wipe (require like 5 biodata) for 1 paper.

Yes, the character themself wont feel a problem. Only those around in world fill of stuff they cant use feel that.

I mean, I like the idea, but I don’t think character swapping is the issue

at the very least I’m really glad they’re taking the approach of incentivizing playing the character instead of using all of their perks with someone else, nerfing character swapping is a band aid fix and does not address the core issue

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with nobody else knowing how to read wickerbottom’s books or nobody knowing how to operate the winbot or bio scanalyzer or warly’s crock pots

Yes, it wasn't. But klei are balancing the game like it was. Which is why i made this post, if they think it is the issue, then nerf it, dont remove all the character interaction in the game.

I dont think thats unreasonable though, and nothing you proposed in your topic really fixes character swapping in any way, only makes it more tedious. I do think more character synergy can exist but the currently design philosophy does make characters rely a lot less on each other which has a lot of its own benefits. I personally think it’s unreasonable for any other character than Winona to use her catapults, but I’m satisfied with the compromise they made. I think you have to see a lot of character exclusive items as an extension of their perks, since most of these items were made specifically to play into the kit of these characters and not for anyone else, which again is completely fine. I like the idea of niche little interactions being usable by other characters, like I believe Bernie can still be in his small form even if Willow isn’t around, but there is a difference between synergy and just giving character perks to other characters, and a lot of the things you’ve said have pointed to the latter

Because it wasnt a problem in first place.

I dont see character have to rely on other to function in first place. But there are benefit when characters can rely on each other and empower each other, or even help each others in small ways.

there is a mod called all powerfull that allows you to use everyother character's perk, you are playing a game for your own klei entertainment if you think that's too op you can limit yourself to not use the celestial portal or play like a real one and play in wilderness and lose every boss blueprint each time you die (you keep all the items in the world only lose your character progress)

You would world hop anyways to renew ressources like RoG ruins.

Bundling Wrap drops from basic bees. Taking enough ressources with you to travel back to your main world is a non-issue. You can prebuild.

Character switching is not a problem.
