Quite possibly the most redundant skill in the game

Recommended Posts

Please note: This post isn't about a skill being useful or not. I am merely presenting data.

I am hoping that with these posts people may begin to notice a pattern. Specifically how normally, skills with similar controversial situations would have been addressed during beta.

For those not aware Wormwoods initial set of skill were so bad they inquired a bit of backlash from the community. Unfortunately, due to Klei's haste an entire branch made it through beta without a single tweak:

Today I want to talk about these skills:

Juicy_Berry_Bush_Crafting.png.30fc12df7a7581a8bb5d45b3cfa5fcfb.png and Berry_Bush_Crafting.png.9d27403c3cd08e7154258c631ede5f4f.png

What is the difference between juicy berries and normal berry bushes?

(Rain shortens the growth time)

Juicy berry bush: Produce 3 Juicy berries within 9-13 days.

3 Juicy berries provide the hunger value of: 12.5 x 3 = 37.5

Not accounting rain, a juicy berry bush will generate a hunger value of:

2.88 hunger a day

Berry bush: Produces 1 berry every 3-5 days.

1 berry has the hunger value of 9.375 hunger.

Not accounting for rain, a berry bush will generate the hunger value of:

1.875 hunger a day

That means a juicy berry bush provides 1 total hunger more than a regular berry bush a day.

Now a few caveats to this:

1. You would need to perfectly harvest the berry bushes to compete with the juicy berry bushes.

2. Juicy berries provide +1 more filler for crockpot recipes.

What do you think? Was this more than you expected or was it less?

How much of a difference do you think 1 more hunger and +1 filler makes to Wormwood?

Do you think it makes more sense to fuse normal berry bushes into juicy ones? Keeping its total point cost and possibly replacing its slot with something else?

Or do you think the difference is so minor juicy berry bushes should be merged with the regular one? Lessening the total point cost.

Should it be left alone?

Or is this whole branch cooked?

My suggestion for the branch:
1. Add grass tuft to sapling skills.
2. Merge berry bush skill together, and move reeds to the juicy berry spot, then meat bulb into reed skill spot
3. Re-add the blooming skill that give petals at the end, so we have a reason to go all the way.
I'm sure this will fix everything! :devilish:

some kind of crafting station

I hate crafting at [insert specific stations] gimmick to access contents unless they're supported with some other counterparts. Celestial orb? The counterpart is ancient pseudoscience and even the orb only has the slightest advantage for it being able to be carried around. If players can also access the crafting menu when it's in inventory then all the better.

Brightsmithy? Counterpart is Shadowplinth. Pretty much the same shadow vs lunar stuff.

Event items are well, events so it's just whatever.

This whole branch is best be removed and replace these reicpe into some kind of crafting station available to all characters.

I agree. Wormwood mains rarely pick these skills. Most treat him as a disposable crafting station—select, craft, then switch back. I don't want characters to be single-use tools. so, make it available to all players at a certain progression point.

I always choose this branch, I love to decorate my worlds and have minimal negative impact on everything.

Where is cactus crafting tho? Banana tree crafting? Ferns? Succulents? Give my boy all dem plants! :3

Cactus crafting would actually be really nice. If they fused juicy berries into normal berry bushes I would place the cactus there in place of the juicy berry bushes.

That would... actually be so amazing. That petal skill alone would be enough for me to invest in that branch.

for megabasing without cheating with loot world switches, those skills are invaluable for decorating with bushs

And by the time you're doing that you could easily swap characters dozens of times in a row. I think "Completely worthless, never pick this, this is here so that later on you can temporarily equip this for like 2 minutes as you mass craft things before unequipping it again" is garbage skill tree design. It may as well be just base kit built in to the character if the situation where it's used is one where switching to and from the skills is a trivial affair.

Personally I found mass bush hats with mass eye plants an amusing way to spend some time, and it’s my second favorite branch overall, with the sad caveat that neither it nor the mushroom path are on the glowing bug branch, and the old saying about having your cake and eating it, to create berry bushes is to not use them for hunger, and if you’re already satisfying hunger without the bushes, then it does make the bush project both long term and redundant with the hope it will be lazier in the future.
