What exactly is Klei working on?

Recommended Posts

Is it just me? It feels like the update has been delayed for too long to be a... delay. I mean, it's mid February. Normally there would be another new update by now. Also what exactly are they working on? Wendy skill tree could not possibly take weeks of an entire team of developers considering it was meant to be ready to be rolled out when it began in the first place. Is it possible that they just started working on a new update to release them both together?

Klei is trying to very cleverly drain the days/months down so that they can do something (probably huge) for the actual day of DSTs 10 year anniversary (which no has not *officially* arrived yet.)

I won’t even begin to give a guess as to what that actually is but I will just say that sometime back ago there was a DST coming to mobile via Netflix gaming thing that got revealed (by Netflix’s own promotional advertisements) that KLEI has not stepped in and announced any sort of news on that here on the forums & If they’re waiting for the Netflix mobile port to be ready to go live to coincide with the games 10 year anniversary, then that could be a (possible) reason why we are only One More Monday away from MARCH and still haven’t gotten the 2025 Roadmap for DST.

Otherwise: Development on the game is dying down and they’re getting ready to abandon the DST.

I'll be real, whenever I had the thoughts of "this has been in progress for so long, it HAS to be huge" I never was right. I agree with well-met, we shouldn't have expectations.

Isn't the 10 year anniversity next year (because the game was released 21st April 2016)?

I think you might be underestimating how hard and time consuming making a game/update is.

A delay like the one we got rattled their whole schedule. Klei are very anti-crunch, which is good, and also means stuff gets shifted when more work needs to be done.

And bringing up what I said before- the more content in the game, the more compatibility work has to be done. So workload grows, but a week still has the same amount of hours in it.

Klei launched Mind Over Magic and Rift of the NecroDancer recently, I'm hoping those launches being done somehow means more time for DST

And ngl from Hallowed Nights to Valentine's Day the DST calender is pretty predictable, a bit boring perhaps.. but that means we're now in the exciting, surprising, chaotic half of the year :wilson_celebrate: :wilson_love:

dude they legit had said bout the port in June last year, what are you on to.

also if you ever read the news, the Netflix Games-exclusive port was scrapped. still gonna come on mobile (via play/app store will be my bet)

Klei published those games. They had no hand in developing them.

I fear there was a post in another game‘s forum here that Netflix had cancelled the mobile versions of DST and another Klei game again x_x

I think they linked to this article:

Again as I said, the mobile port is still worked on, just that it ain't being Netflix-exclusive anymore. Not sure about Rotwood and Lab Rats though.

Cool! I didn't know that. But actually I like this version more, since it feels less connected to the Netflix-spin-off-media associations the people seem to have when hearing the name.

Now wait a second hold on… is the DST mobile an actual “port” or is it the same Xbox One game that can be streamed through the cloud?

Like uhm okay on Xbox Gamepass you can currently stream through the cloud Dead Cells that lets you play the Xbox Game on your mobile phone using Touch Screen Controls.

But there is also a Dead Cells (Netflix Edition) which is a mobile version of the game, that includes all of the DLCs, that is playable for Free* exclusively to paying Netflix Monthly subscription Members.

OR there’s ALSO a Premium Paid version of Dead Cells For Mobile, which costs 4.99$ for the base game then 7$ for return to Castlevania Dlc, 4$ the queen and the Sea, 4$ for Fatal Falls, 4$ for The Bad Seed.

OR there’s also Dead Cells Apple Arcade Edition.. which is a paid subscription similar to Netflix version.

wow no wonder so many people have heard of “Dead Cells” but very few have heard of or played the Superior “Trinity Fusion.” Lmao…

Anyway- Since DST is a constantly online connected game, it made sense to need an online subscription (Netflix) to play it.

Walter Skill Tree seems to be the current focus of the team working on the beta. And Walter's skill tree had been absolutely incomplete until like... A week ago or so.

It's probably close to releasing, and they'll put out a Road Map once they have one ready. Then we'll know their plans for the rest of the year.

I'm honestly scared of this. I don't understand how such a niche, cheap game can run for years with active updates. Doesn't seem sustainable. :c

It's quite hard to understand but is something like this:

If the sales of the game were all the economy that Klei gets yeah it's unsustainable.

But the profit of DST comes with a bunch of things one of those are skins (they don't affect the game mechanics just aesthetics).

Other fair point are public servers Klei servers are not the best thing in the world and I suppose they limit the resources for maintaining those. Being that just a cheap way to keep the game "alive"

And my final point is community. Believe it or not dst has a quite big community from all over the world (yeah ik the biggest part of it is Chinese) but having such a big community tends to make a game profitable due to colabs with other games.

Oh yeah also this is not the only game Klei has there's a bunch more you need to do the math for all of them and then see if the product is still profitable.

"Niche, cheap game" when it's consistently hitting 50-80k average monthly concurrent (compared to GTAV's 150k concurrent,  Baldur's Gate 3's 65k concurrent, HELLDIVERS 2's 60k concurrent, Elden Ring's 40k concurrent, etc) and has hundreds if not thousands of dollars of microtransactions.
