Hey guys!  The new Walter skill tree is finally ready for Beta.  There's still some work to be done to finish off one last skill, and to polish the icons and skill descriptions and strings, but it's in a good spot for testing now.  Since there's a lot of new things and some new control mechanics, I won't go into too much detail on each item below, and rather just let you guys try it out in game!

Changes

  • Players can now feed their mount while riding them.
  • Walter’s basekit
    • Woby’s bags can now be opened while mounted.
    • Riding directly on Woby’s thick fur now provides some thermal insulation.
    • Woby can now be commanded to “Stay” in one spot.
    • Big Woby can now manually transform back to Small Woby.
    • Added a hunger meter for Woby.
    • Walter himself will now gain 50% extra sanity from storytelling if he has an audience.  This scales up to a maximum of 75% extra sanity with a bigger audience.
  • Walter’s skill tree
    • Increased the duration of Mark of Brilliance to 30 seconds.
    • Removed the Woby Badge system.
    • Condensed most of the Slingshot Customizer and Ammo skills.
    • Added new Scouting skills for surviving in the wilderness alongside his companion Woby.  Here are some highlights:
      • Crafting skills for a Portable Campfire, improved first aid, and more…
      • A drying rack attachment for Woby’s backpack, along with a new recipe for turning Monster Jerky into long lasting Woby Snacks.
      • “Woby Here, Woby There” is a courier skill, which did not make it into this build yet.
    • Added new Woby skills to improve her utility and mobility.  Here are some highlights:
      • Skills to increase Woby’s speed and endurance, as well as to aid Walter in his various everyday actions.
      • Sprinting after running for a few seconds.  Sprinting has a fixed speed that is not affected by Woby’s hunger level.
      • Dashing by double-clicking or double-tapping in a direction.
      • Lunar and Shadow variants that modify Woby’s sprinting or dashing abilities.
  • Improved accuracy of the Player’s networked position between client and server.
  • Added Thulecite Bug Net.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed missing horns in all Woby up-facing animations.
  • Fixed missing up-facing idle animation for Big Woby.
  • Ornery Chest won’t duplicate when it hides now.
  • Pipspooks will leave if they are not on a quest and their home grave is removed.
  • Fixed the elixir shields stopping temperature damage.
  • Fixed a physics bug with teleporting to points that collide with the world edge.
  • Added missing sound effects for Spelunker’s Bridge.

LETS GOOOOOOOOOO

KLEI COOKED

I've got to admit. I was pretty nervous about whatever update you where cooking up. I really liked Walter's (mostly) original skill tree, and was worried that the new one would fall into many of the same vices I have with the other character's skill trees. But honestly? No. Not at all. Walter's new skill tree is an improvement by all metrics and still manages to avoid all the problems I normally complain about.

His perks are varied, they're all useful and unique without being overbearing, there aren't any "filler" perks, tons of quality of life features getting added to his base kit instead of being locked behind perk points. I am genuinly impressed that Walter's skill tree is turning out as good as it is.

Like- the only two things I can complain about is that the Woby Snacks only taking monster jerky is slightly weird, and you should be able to transform Woby back into Big Woby if she still has enough hunger left for it. But that's really it. This is just an astonishingly solid skill tree all around.

first of all i'm happy with all this 3 trees

come clunky things:

Game crashes when you take raw meat from her drying rack.

icons in different places while mounted or not. to see it just try to mount and dismount

when i keep going mounted and press tab - Woby dashes sometimes. or open and close map.

seems like woby dashes only in 8 directions even with mouse

after shadow dash you have to click third time to move.

when i drop items from her inventory while sitting on i have to re open it for each item

some thoughts:

shadow dash too expensive. do not want to waste many hunger by accident or turn it off. mb add an increasing cost if you cast it too often. or slight cooldown.

would like be able to use snacks to feed something else like pigs or shield or terror. right now it gives too little hunger for this

i would like be able to chop and mine on Woby if she has according perk.

mb drying rack we should build before use

That would actually go so hard fr imagine using woby as a moose against trees and rocks nonstop while you ride her

it has hunger cost as i see. and right now Woby very aggressively destroy trees after 1 my chop while i can do other stuff

This is a beta, sir. There will be bugs. If you can't accept this, don't play the beta.

Eh. I didn't realize you could summon abigail at all when I wrote the time.

Even in a beta there's the expectation that the base character to function. It would be like if they released a beta build that crashed whenever you entered the world.

There should be a functional baseline before a build is released to the public. In this case, all 3 characters should have their core systems be functional.

I agree with the removal of the badge system.

It didnt make sense to esentially have a skill select system within a skill select system. It doesnt work in a skilltree.

So what's the problem to reflect same balance questioning from Wendy to Wortox?

Yes I did questioning and challenging the flexible standard of folks to different characters. If you don't like it, go say "no" to the flexible standard at the beginning.

And I HAD already clarified that the soul piercing and the soul jar things don't bother me personally many times. I HAD clarified that my aims was just for questioning the flexible standard before.

So could I get your words as a dissatisfied about any questioning toward the unfair flexible standard?

Listen, it's been absolutely cringe-inducing to watch those attempts at trying to start Wendy/Wortox discourse by dragging Wortox players into it just because you're dissatisfied with the former. I imagine it would be far more productive to produce Wendy feedback that concerns Wendy over starting five billion "but Wortox tree OP, why Wendy tree BAD????" threads that lead to discussions that go absolutely nowhere and then get locked an hour after.
