Making the Great Depths Worm GREATER

Recommended Posts

I love the great depth worm since I was hoping for a creature similar to the Pugalisk in dst for years, and I think it could be expanded to be even greater than it is.

Expanded Eating Mechanics

There are alot of opportunities for creative play and interactions with the eating mechanics of the boss.

First of all, a good suggestion is that poop should be “spit” out after it digests something instead of just dropped for an interesting, albeit gross attack (would lower player sanity, is covering screen with poop too much ???).

Hot Items/creatures could change this attack into balls of flame that can set things on fire. Cold items/creatures would change the poop into snowballs that shatter into ice shards on impact (high AoE basically). Also, cold things would be digested slower and hot things faster. These new projectiles could also be picked up midair to use on enemies later.

There are also many items/enemies that would logically hurt the Great Depths Worm like:

-Spiky Hutch

-Tooth Traps

-Any weapons (damage based on weapon damage?)

-Anenemies

-Bees

-Slurtle Mounds

-Durians

Explosions could also do this, but they only deal damage one time when digested:

-gunpowder

-brightshade bombs

-slurtle slime

-Seedshells (?)

-Bee Mines (these would deal gradual damage after exploding)

It would play an animation similar to its death animation on being damaged by swallowing these:

More “Two-Faced” Nature

I couldn’t help but notice that the… back end of the Great Depths Worm resembles the face in the front (when it’s closed):

AD_4nXdPbJYuU70r5b5rJVf5z3X1SLqNpWh6ZyAqyg_AZSFSVUxo9d--Ent8VW-SMp1LRhWU5hK_vnK51ltgma7D6YehSjPe_mTgjBN2KaZlKsIfYO5hJ8qHhv9R-U6PD7znIg_koSf_7-8SWcJ3Tp5MeSJIYtw?key=mf8CN5H_u6Y8IAX0xEgm5A

This opens the door for a new feature. The Great Depths Worm could start moving the opposite direction using the other mouth after it stops moving. This would add more surprise and unpredictability to the fight while embracing the “two-faced” nature of the update.

The Great Depths Worm could even stop without chewing to turn around, giving unprepared players a brief chance to strike.

(also it should drop 2 glowberries)

Loot

Honestly, there are many directions this loot could take.

The mouth of the Great Depth Worm could drop where the burrow temporarily stays currently after it dies. It could be:

A) Used to digest stuff. This would be cool and fitting, BUT this role is already fulfilled by the scaled furnace. The scaled furnaces function of disposing items would have to be removed or the way both structures dispose items would have to be changed so both have a unique function. Scaled furnaces could be changed to cooking items as some people requested. The mouth could dispense poop after being given items. The mouth could deconstruct items with the cost of time/lower amount of resources recovered. There are many ways to do this, but one would have to be changed

B) Wormholes! Personally not my favorite since it’s kinda uncreative and requires the previous “two-faced” suggestion to work. The Great Depths Worm would drop both of its mouths, which would now be connected as a wormhole. Both in this suggestion and the other one, the mouth could be uprooted and carried, so wormhole locations could be moved around. Both wormholes have to be in the same shard to work.

Nitpicks/Other:

-Currently, the Great Depths Worm can just tunnel across bridges (probably applies to other burrowing creatures as well).

-The health is a bit much since it can be encountered before rifts, although opening the fight to more strategies (which the previous suggestions do) could solve this already. The damage could be turned down as well since most of the time players will just reach 1 health regardless of whether they’re wearing armor or not.

-Make it digest boulders instead of just chewing them, as was already suggested

-The ground cracking effect before it emerges could be better, since the dirt pile is the same that shows when the worm has already emerged. Instead, the dirt pile should bulge, better fitting the cracking ground that accompanies it:

-Make it wet why isn’t it wet

I will add anything that comes to me in the future to this thread.

I forgot to mention this but the worm should vomit if it eats too much in a short period of time. This would regurgitate some of the things swallowed, as well as items from it's loot pool. This attack would also damage players, so be careful.

This would act as a decent farm and is more engaging than just dropping things on death. Perhaps the items on death could be lowered to incentivize this.

Other things that I would appreciate to be changed in the new Depth Worm Boss.
-1. Design Revamp - Add multiple rows of sharp teeth arranged in a circular pattern similar to the Splumonkeys.

-2. Design Revamp - Change the entire interior of the boss to align with the color scheme, teeth arrangement and head shape presented in the Artistic section of the live stream, ensuring the visuals to mirror precisely with the presentation.

-3. Behavior Revise - Options for the boss to calm his destructive frenesi and burrow itself on the ground, sleep or to be frozen by the player.

-4. Favorite Victims - Design the boss to favor Slurtles over the player as its favorite food. The greater dephts worm will take over an area on the map near to Slurtle Mounds but she won't be able to destroy these spawners. Whenever she eats a Snurtle or Slurtle, the mob will be completely digested and the worm will spit out the armor or helmet with 100% chance to drop.
A secret interaction could happen with the new Shadow Mimic and the broken shell itens.

-5. Combat - Make sure that the boss always to be wet and have a weakness to explosions like the brightshade bomb. Make the worm stay off the ground longer to allow for more attacks during its combat phase.

I still don't fully understand the developers proposal regarding the Worm Boss loot but I would suggest that it could drop a transplantable sapling variant of the Mysterious Plant or even laying in the aftermath of his death 1-2 Fossil Fragments.

Okay I want to start by saying that your Expanded Eating Mechanics and More “Two-Faced” Nature are splendid and I applaud to you. I love them and would want to see them in game!  That being said, I don't agree with your other points and heavily against because:

1) The hp is completely fine, considering his potential to become the first boss of the caves. Also while I despise, as half of the community, the existance of the rifts, I don't get your point on bring them up, as if the worm is very difficult. Already people are being accustomed to his fight and the majority find it repetitive. Just wait half an year and people will eat him on breakfast. Consider that Deerclops, Bearger, Moose/Goose and Antlion have each 6000 hp and wormy boi has 5000 hp. Consider how much unbalanced and messy is the game and how easier is becoming, especially when the characters are becoming stronger while the world is staying behind. Also also, you said it yourself that your interactions ideas could very easily make the fight easier, but fun :)

2) For the loot, I'll quote myself

Quote

I really don't get why the community is bashing down his drops. In reality I know why. Because they're not unique new drops to craft new things, but we don't need it. We don't need to always bloat even more the giant unbalanced mess of the game. Also just because there are far better methods for blue gems, red gems, monster meat, manure (although I'm skeptical about this one), rocks and thulecite, it doesn't diminish the giant value the worm is bringing. In normal runs or blind runs (because those exist) having more choices and alternatives are always better than having only one or two. I'm down to fight him from time to time, especially when time will pass and we will be accustomed to him and better to fight him (I'm already considering him easy-medium difficulty). Lastly, he drops thulecite units, for maxwell sake. That should be enough to give a motive to kill him.

I'm not totally against your loot ideas but when you described the wormholes, I was only thinking "Man....if Klei could rework the telelocator focus and make it work for the caves..." See? We don't need to bloat the game, if such items already exist and can do what we wanted. It's fine if the loot is generic sometimes.

However, if we really want to give its loot something new or unique, this is the absolute best we could find it and it changed my view on his loot! --->

Full disclosure here but I can’t play in Betas because I’m on Xbox, so if the Big Worm already does this please ignore this suggestion.

But now that the player can build rope bridges it’s super easy to flee to other biomes.. right?  Simple Suggestion..

If the gap is small enough for it to Arch across and keep chasing you, that’s probably what it should be able to do? Not only will it be terrifying, but it’ll look cool doing it.

We need a mob that can telepoof over the void. There should be more gem user mobs like Klaus.

spiky hutch does actually hurt the worm if it swallows him, same case for electrification circuits and bramble husks.

gunpowder, if lit up first before it swallows it, does actually damage it, and the damage scales with the number of gunpowder.

woah, does it digest the armor or does it come out undamaged? feeding it a pile of armors would be such a great cheese if it wasn't too prohibitively expensive

oh i meant that as in if it eats a player wearing said armor, probably shouldve worded it better, and yes the armor takes damage
