Water Coolers now function as Cooling Stations.

Do water coolers actually act as Cooling stations? There is nothing mentioned on the building's info

They seem to only provide the "Heat resistance" buff that is also not mentioned anywhere

Is there a hidden mechanic here that actually cares more about thermal transfer than absolute temperature?

Yes it appears to be based on hot great the environmental exchange is, gases or liquids with higher TCs will make for a smaller comfortable temperature range. Warm coats add insulation which reduces heat transfer and allows for dupe to be in both colder and hotter environments. Chilly or toasty seems to happen when the heat transfer gets outside of the -39dtu/s to +8dtu/s range. This is shown when you mouseover either toasty or the dupe's temperature. Ignore the text about being over-insulated. More insulation is good, some people at Klei don't understand their own game. When a dupe's temperature drifts too far from ideal, homeostasis (ranging from -557dtu/s to +557dtu/s) kicks in. This counteracts a dupe's internal heat generation and any environmental exchange that is sufficiently small . They still get the toasty or chilly status though.

They do. I used them in my Oasisse test of the DLC. The dupes take a cool drink and get the buff for 0.2 cycles

Water coolers like you would build algae diffusers while exploring?

I haven't played any hot starts het to see it in action and see how to work around it but the water cooler should have some more info of the mechanic mentioned, right?

Yeah, it helps to have the water coolers close by and on more temperature diverse map it's probably a good ideas to cooling and heating stations in several areas. Water below 32C causes the chilly surroundings debuff and since dupes can't use the cooling/heating stations before they encounter the debuff they try to run all the way to next station just to stop and go back into the water.

Apparently we are left without a source of mercury?

The geothermal POI produces material for free depending on the tempereature you input, I didnt get mercury but my guess is that at a certain temperature range you will gain mercury from the building.
