The misunderstanding of Woodie's "Lack of a downside"

Thats the last 6 or so years summed up.

And Klei won't go backwards (AKA mass nerfing), so the only way is forward, and onto weird bandaid stuff like Planar.

That isnt even difficult... we got ranged cheap to maintain weapons in exchange of solitary stationary mobs

The enemies needs to be changed to reach the level of the characters

My dears, what the what happenened in this comment section?

Klei made the funny druid character able to use his funny druid forms without being miserable. (he still will be for some time as it is very unlikely that a new player will come into the forums to get your guys very useful tips like don't starve and write "c_skip150" in chat)

From those comments I thought that it was time for the montly "characters have no downside" thread.

I think you guys need to chill a little bit, as currently the worst part about Woodie is currently sitting on a chair reading this comment.

I think a problem a lot of people have is players on these forums have played the game for actual years (in some cases, over a decade) and character downsides become pretty easy to work around when you have years worth of knowledge to utilize. Ones you can’t really do that with (like Woodie’s forced transformations every full moon) stand out a lot more as a result. I think the implications of these vary for everyone, but to me I never really liked downsides that are just always there to roadblock you at every stage of the game. There’s a reason a lot of people wanted a way to block the transformation mechanic (I remember a good chunk suggesting the crown removing them if you have it equipped).

I do think it is a bit silly that once CC is dead you just have that ability for every repeat playthrough and I do wish the world had to at least go to that point to unlock the affinity perks, but otherwise I don’t really mind being able to have a way to stop the curse, especially in a world where Wicker/Moonstorms can force a full moon every single night potentially and becomes very troubling to work around.

I think while they have been adding more options, there is still a noticeable efficiency gap between using the howlitzer/brightshade staff for combat and just using traditional melee weapons/armor. I’ve got pretty much infinite hounds teeth, but in 99 out of 100 cases I use a brightshade sword + helm for combat purposes because it is exponentially more efficient to carry a a sword/helm + 10 kits then it is to carry a bunch of hounds teeth for a howlitzer.

I do agree a bit with the second part though, makes me curious if they plan to work on the shadow side on the next update since I do want to see some more unique challenges to take on with the new gear we have.

Nah because you still need to kill af and cc once to unlock.

A new player isnt going to have access to affinities for a long time. Console players of the game cant cheat these affinities either.

This might be relevant if you have to beat CC as the character you wish to unlock the affinity perk for. But you can basically 100% the game as Wolfgang or Wigfrid and completely avoid ever experiencing Woodie's full moon transformation.

True wigfrid and wolfgang make it much easier to accomplish but its still really hard tho. I think people forget how much of a milestone it is to kill both CC and Ancient fuelweaver.

You have earned these strong affinities forever in my opinion.

How much does one need to even contribute? Is it enough for me to just be in the same server as a group that's rushing CC on their own?

Its basically better in every scenario possible. Even moonstorms since you do more damage to celestial champion

10% more damage isn't worth wasting around 1/8 of your time

I encourage downsides as long dealing with them are fun. Wicker makes me [Im not kidding, happened last run] have 9 full stacks of nightmare fuel while doing my shenanigans in the end of winter. Thats a lot, got tired in the end. :V
But still a downside. It doesnt come for free. People can argue that killing shadows aint difficult, but try to think that they slow u down when u have goals tied with time and its not an isolated situation, its always shadows + SOME OTHER stuff. They kinda put pressure in.

Worm is another one that is a perfect example for me.

And that make them challanging, more rewarding when u have what u want that is offered by her and I would say some chars have cool downsides but people deny it as a downside in some cases cuz reduce it as a simple scenario and cut it off. Probably my boss rushing nature that I have to deal with stuff without retreating much, dunno.

TLDR - love downsides as long they fun :V
