I miss old Wolfgang

Recommended Posts

Maybe I will sound like a old man, but I miss Wolfgang before rework .

Of all the rework, he has the worst one in my opinion.

So he's stronger now but he's also become more boring. I never liked the idea of him rocking dumbbell, it's kind of boring for me. Previously, everything depended on his hunger and it was cool because the game DON'T STARVE and one character has a mechanic tied to hunger. It also felt more magical and in the atmosphere of the game where there are many interesting strange things.

Yes, the rework was a long time ago, but I am really begging Klei to add some skill or several skills that return or at least look a little like what was before, so that I could play the Wolfgang that I liked even without mods.

Yeah I miss old Wolfgang too but I still play him now it ain't that bad aside from the extremely underwhelming skill tree his mechanics just aren't interesting anymore I hope they take a look at him again we're seeing other characters get way cooler abilities

I loved the old wolfgang, the new one feel to much bloated with +damage everthing... besides i don't find it fun compared to manage hunger vs strengh.. it was diferent in a good way, when compared to wagstaff that was blind and this just made his downside unbeareable in long therm for almost nothing in trade. Sure character perks and downsides are important but it does get better when they interact in some sort of way

Really the biggest thing I hate about reworked Wolfgang is getting stuck at that border between normal and mighty, where you're being chased by mobs, you hit them a few times, become mighty, take damage while stun-locked, then lose mighty again while creating space, resulting in another stun-lock and more damage.

running with dumbells stops mightiness draining.

Good point. Running around carrying an item in your hand slot is such a dumb design. Ever seen these afk Wolfgangs that get stuck on buildings like it's a treadmill?

So do you normally just walk slower than ever before due to never using walking canes at any stage of the game? Maximizing mobility by maintaining normal form while using a cane is optimal in most cases, and is only problematic when you get caught in a precarious situation, in which case you may not have the luxury of juking shadows/splumonkeys/hounds while being slow boy with a dumbbell.

default speed is enough to dodge all of those and you can use magi anyway

I don't play Wolfgang, but if I did, I'd keep my might meter in the middle for speed boost, and would only work out when or if it gets too low (or before a boss).

Maybe you should try it. Run around for a while with a dumbbell in your hand slot and see how many times you accidentally throw it while trying to perform another action. Maybe accidentally hit the beefalo that you’re supposed to be taming to overcome being slow.

I played the high heck out of Reworked Wolfgang he is now one of my favorite characters, I’m not sure which type of Dumbell your carrying around, but a Gembell or Marble Bell will buff you up in seconds, I do play on Xbox Though, so their may be minor differences between PC and Xbox Play.

In fact, Playing as Wolfgang prior to a very recent update for Consoles was a pain in the butt, because of how console players couldn’t quickly switch between Cane/Other things, until a very recent update.

One of the things I love about the new Wolfgang that Im certain original Wolfgang players don’t take into account, is that his Mightiness is no longer tied exclusively to how hungry he is.

I don’t know if you’ve ever watched noobs play DST or not, but Food isn’t easy for them to gather- They probably more likely rely on Monster Meat from Spiders to make Meatballs with.

And this is where New Wolfgang > Old Wolfgang.

Because if your starving and need to kill a spider for meat then you would already be puny weak Wolfgang and have a significantly worse time.

With the New Wolfgang, a few simple pumps of a Gembell or Marble bell even if you’re fully starving to Death, can get you to Mighty mode to deal with those spiders.

Not all character rework changes are for the experienced players, some changes were made to ease newbies into being able to enjoy the characters.

(which is why wormwood now passively heals in sunlight)

However I do agree that Wolfgang’s Skill tree is boring and nowhere near as fun as Newer Skill Trees on other characters have been.

If you haven’t experienced the mighty/normal stunloop, you haven’t played Wolfgang as much as me. To be clear, I’m not complaining about dumbbells, and I’m not looking for advice, either. There are many reasons why you might find your mightiness dropping into normal range at a very unfortunate time where you may not have the luxury of a few seconds to stand and lift to safely clear that threshold.

This is something unique to reworked Wolfgang, hence why I’m using it to compare to old Wolfgang.

No, it’s only unique to reworked Wolfgang if you weren’t starving as old Wolfgang, Otherwise.. he still suffered the same transformation stuns.

But since I own and also play as Wanda, it’s not much different from her aging, or Woodie Randomly transforming into a Werebeast when he wasnt paying attention to the day length he was on.

Unless I’m miss remembering pre-rework wolfgang, he still had to have those animations of vulnerability while transitioning between puny/mighty phases.

I liked the hunger balance, muscles are revealed in the kitchen. Though they removed it completly. Not even a hunger drain when mighty.

Even a 25% faster hunger when mighty would do a lot for a small change for me. When i believed there was an actual hunger drain, it was way more fun to balance being mighty, normal and wimpy at certain times. I liked the resource managment.

Though, i was unironically dillusional since there was no hunger drain all that time.

It feels much less rewarding and special to be mighty.

Pre-rework, being mighty all the time was expensive, and it made you feel smart to find a way to easily amass food. (Also, rip milkmaid hat synergy)

I would actually like current wolfgang to be combined with old wolfgang, the resource managment is realistic to real life body building, in a fun way.

The loop I’m speaking of is one where you are immediately punished for kiting (mighty -> normal), and then immediately punished for attacking (normal -> mighty).

This didn’t happen with hunger unless you’re eating a single piece of honey in between attacks or something.

Lets not even talk about other such fun experiences like losing a catfish due to mightiness while fishing, or trying to move a lot of statues around.

I also miss old Wolfgang, but I'm glad he was re-worked because it got me out of that bubble. I went from always playing Wolfgang to immediately swapping to one of the least played survivors of the time, Wurt. I've loved every minute of it and have enjoyed her reworks, QoL changes and now skilltree.
