It has been a while since our last lore dump

Recommended Posts

I just wanna start off with that i absolutely love DS & DST, and i love Klei for all their hard work over the years that i've played this game. Not many times have i been left disappointed with DST despite the ruckus that sometimes happens within the community. I love pretty much everything about this game, it's story, it's world. It has given me great joy for many years and hopefully many more. I've met many people i can call friends. There is absolutely no ill-will towards my statement i'm about to make. I want everybody at Klei to take their time as much as they can and whenever they're ready to show what they're creating within DST and their other projects they've got working on.

The lore of DST has been quite sparse lately. It started off pretty wild with Cyclum and even more with Metheus. But afterwards, it feels like there's been a major stop since then. This was about 7 years ago. we've had the gateway arc, Return of Them in that time and now we're onto From Beyond. The third arc we're getting through. And i don't wanna come to silly conclusions that there might not be more lore, not that there hasn't been. There has been plenty of lore over the last few years. But. It hasn't been very.. substancial or rather let's say satisfied. Or at least it feels like we're not really moving? And when we are, it is very slow and we're left with more questions than answers.  All these breadcrumbs of past and present lore but not really moving forward and past answers never explained. answers that's been wanted for some time now. Debates after debates of who Metheus is and who it belongs to. Why Maxwell was out in nevada, what did the note Willow got exactly mean? Where did Maxwell get the umbra. You get my point.

We've just not really gotten a good ol' piece of meaty lore in a long, long time. Conclusion to each 'chapter' or beginning of each chapter gave us insight to what was happening. The closest we've gotten to that is the stageplay, but it's layered in metaphors and with no real official answers, only possible theories.  For RoT it felt like there was going to be some big conclusion to this chapter but.. nothing happened. No answers, No substance other than a couple of vague Maxwell quotes and Wagstaff taking the energy, literally leaving us in the dark.

I remember when Axium Visus came out. And everybody was extatic about the possibility of another arg puzzle. Finally, answers!
Even peeking at the metadata seemed to have pretty much teased that something was going to happen. JoeW talking about that the "next puzzle is going to be stupid" on the kleicord, and i don't want to hold this against you JoeW. But it really felt like you and the team had something planned. The stream, i think the one before the release of the update had everyone and their mother repeating the same questions in the twitch chat. "Is there going to be a puzzle", and with all your heart and might to your contempt you all ignored it. For good reason obviously.
But again indicating that you all were hiding something, planning something for the big finale.

I don't know why minecraft and Terraria is there

And nothing came out of it. So, what happened? Cause it really felt like something was going to happen.

I say this with the goodness in my heart, this isn't me being impatient and wavering my fist or holding a torch and pitchfork. I am just very passionate. But. 7 years is a heck of a long time. And i'm sure i'm not the only one getting a bit tired of these breadcrumbs but with no real substance given. The pace has just gotten really really slow and honestly a bit painful. I whole heartedly love every animatic and short even if they aren't lore heavy. But i really miss the days of old arg puzzles, and the lore put into them. It doesn't have to be something as crazy as Metheus, i would be totally fine if you all just did another Cyclum (I'm not saying Cyclum was easy to make just compared to Metheus it was a completely different ball-game) or something much simpler. Not one upping the next puzzle after the last, making them bigger and bigger in concept and size. Or requiring more people to do it with. I know it's never that simple. I wish it was, it takes a lot of effort to create the puzzles and brilliant minds with it. I know that. It's funny because i remember when everybody was basically looking for hints and clues frame by frame each time a cinematic came out. You had brainwashed us with the past ARG puzzles that we couldn't go through a single cinematic without thinking there's a puzzle and i mean this in a positive light. This was always such a fun time. The puzzles was the best way to gain insight on the lore.

I don't know how to end this post. I'm sure you take this into consideration, you always do. Heck maybe you're working on a puzzle rn as we speak. All in all. You don't have to answer, it would be awesome if you did with some insight as to what was going on. But i just really wanted to put out my thoughts and feelings regarding how the pace is going right now.

I'm not good with puzzles personally, but I like seeing the community going cracked at it and deciphering little things to ancient language itself in order to unlock rewards. Metheus probably was the biggest puzzle I've seen and likely hard to top it, but maybe there will be time for another big puzzle to have around that would entertain everyone.

DST community is huge by all regards, I can understand that the game's updates are important and probably should still have highest priority in having the game updated. But I also really hope to see community to get together and try going at another hardcore puzzle of sorts.

There's still too much that is unanswered. And I guess it'll be till some part of game's development just to keep us on edge. But I hope for not too long, we don't live forever after all XD

I was hoping we got a puzzle that was related to Alter after RoT was finished, sadly we did not.

Hate to break it to you but it's been 7 years. Klei forgot what the lore was and are just making stuff up on the go.

Be that as it may, I think people would like more lore - made up on the spot or not, the game has been live for so long, probably could do with wrapping up the story.

I believe that it's been mentioned before (by JoeW or maybe it was Corey?) That, whenever the old writers left some time after ANR, they left behind a whole outline/bible/whatever-word of all the lore up to that point and the plans they had for the future, for the new writers to use as reference. We've certainly broken away from that outline by now, but I think it's cartoonishly bad faith to say that the writers "forgot" and are making stuff up on the fly.

Real talk though, what even happened in the Return of them arc? Like, who even are "Them"? I guess the implication is that they're the moon entity. But in Don't Starve's adventure mode Maxwell called the shadows "Them". Did the identity of "Them" change? Or was naming a faction an extremely common pronoun a stupid as hell idea? Probably both if we're being honest.

Part of the moon fell. Ok, I got that. The moon started causing problems. Cool, then Wagstaff showed up for some reason? And apparently he's trying to exploit the moon's power even though he was only interested in the shadow's power in DS? Ok I guess I can believe it, Charlie already has a monopoly on shadow juice so he had to look elsewhere? But not apparently the guys we've been dealing with aren't even the real ones and there are super-juicy planar entities? What is going on???

He was only interested in the shadow power in DS because there literally only is shadow power in DS. There's practically no moon-related stuff outside of DST except like, glommer or werepigs, so he doesn't have any examination quotes about moon stuff because there doesn't exist any for him to examine.

I wish Klei did something more with the shadows instead of nightmare fuel no.2 and tinted entities that simply show up and get killed repeatedly. I get it, it is supposed to be a sandbox without an ending, but could we atleast get Lore description in-game?

I would honestly love if after we kill the CC, something or someone explains why the moon was absent for a day, where did CC go? when we kill the second CC is it a clone?

We could get footprints from werepig in a sinkhole, and a way to close them.

We could get some CC sounds every full moon and some strange quotes.

If klei started adding those little small details into the game -on how things came to be- it would make for a much more enjoyable, fun and entertaining experience while playing the game.

Don't get me wrong tho, we got LOTS of those in the game I'm not complaining. I just feel like these are part of the identity of the game, like a pillar. It should be focused more.

Gameplay and lore different but still parallels of eachother. I imagine CC is dead for good in the story progression. If not for gameplay reasons why would Werepig constantly get trapped in junk and pillars again and again lol.

My guess is that Wagstaff harvests the CC and every time that we "complete" the lunar portal again they send a new one.

But I also wish that we could get more lore dump in the scrap book, as most of the things, including the CC, are named by the survivors.

I think the current lore is cartoonishly bad.

IMO things were fine till after Terrors Below.

After killing the celestial champion and Fuelweaver, two ambitious people outside of the survivors begin destabilizing the very Fabric of the constant. Wagstaff's repeated failures in attempting to create a working portal creates lunar rifts, while Charlie's partial repair of the broken gateway allows new Shadow entities to break through.

The issue is... we've been stuck there for about 5 shorts now. Survival Guide, Falling and Swine and Dine, while fun, have absolutely no bearing on the larger nature of the constant. And while Host of Horrors and Scrappy Scavengers are relevant, we also have no idea where the werepig is going to lead, especially as the tease in Host of Horrors led to Wobot, which while useful as an item, still has no bearing on Plot.

In addition, we're lacking a lot of Survivor centric shorts right now, with no survivors appearing in the last 2 shorts. I hope this changes soon, because the initial premise of the survivors is "got what you wanted but lost what you had" - Wigfrid gets a stage, Wendy gets her sister, Wolfgang gets his strength, etc. So I really hope that, even if we don't get more overarching plot anytime soon, we get followups to the survivor shorts of them  following up on those initial promises: Wendy trying to properly revive her sister, Wigfrid treating the world as a play, Wilson doing science, with other survivors acting as a supporting cast.

maxwell was in nevada? i should know this...

After the train crash it is implied he went out in the middle of nowhere in a place called 'north fork' which is a complete ghost town in Nevada.
You can also see the sun and the cracks in the ground implying a very dried up place.
We know he's trying to send a post card to his brother but likely changed his mind. Wolfgang likely followed him.
This is the moment right before he has turned into The great Maxwell or at least the last time we see him being William.
