$360 Dragonfly (Seeded) Speedrun Tournament!

Recommended Posts

I am proud to announce the next tournament courtesy of the DST Speedrun.com community: The Dragonfly (Seeded, No Wolfgang, No Wigfrid) Tournament!

In this challenge, players will be tasked with defeating the Dragonfly in any of five worlds that have been chosen by us with extremely unique generations, each one boasting its own set of benefits and challenges to overcome. As stated, Wolfgang and Wigfrid are banned, so players will have to get creative and learn a wide variety of perks and characters that don't have immediate access to high health and damage.

In addition to the standard solo category, players will also be able to compete for the first time in a Duo category. The two players must not pick two of the same character, however, so they are expected to take advantage of potential synergies between different characters in this challenge.

And since this tournament is for everyone to participate, we will also be handing out three $20 USD consolation prizes, which will be given out at the end of the tournament to three random participants who submitted a run but didn't win. This means everyone has a chance to win something, so you don't lose anything by giving it a shot.

The prices will be distributed as follows: $120 USD for Solo 1st Place, $60 USD for Solo 2nd Place, $30 USD for Solo 3rd Place, $90 USD for Duo 1st Place (split between both participants however they choose), and 3x$20 USD consolation prizes. If you wish to join the discussion, considering joining the DST Speedrun.com discord server. You can join via this link.

FULL INFO AND RULES ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT:

Spoiler

Rules

  • Defeat the Dragonfly boss as fast as possible on a brand new world that utilizes any of the 5 seeds provided. You may compete in Solo (1 Player) or Duo (2 Player) categories. You may select any character EXCEPT for Wolfgang and Wigfrid. Everything else is allowed, including cheese strategies.
  • In the case of Duo runs, you must select two different characters (you can't choose 2 of the same character).
  • You may submit any number of runs on any of the 5 selected seeds and they will all be equally valid; all seeds compete in the same category, and which one(s) you decide to play on is entirely your choice. You may not try to modify these worlds in any way.
  • Caves must be disabled for this tournament (this is because cave entrances are randomized every time you rollback a world, and we want to keep annoying RNG elements to a minimum).
  • ALL World Settings must remain on default. The only exception to this is the Events setting, which MUST to be set to None . This is because the Hallowed Nights event (which is currently active at the time of writing this) changes world generation and thus results in different worlds. Don't forget to change this setting, as runs will not be accepted otherwise.
  • All the normal Speedrun.com rules apply to this tournament; this covers the obvious ones such as no rollbacks, no console commands, etc. This means that you are able to use client mods as long as they comply with the List of Approved mods. Additionally, the server mods API Gem Core and Disable Autosave are allowed. Since this is seeded only, proof standards aren't that strict.
  • In the case of Duo runs, both players' POVs must be provided.
  • Runs must be performed in the current live patch.

Read the full Speedrun.com rules here: https://www.speedrun.com/do_not_starve_together?h=Bonus_Categories-dragonfly-tournament-seeded-seeded-solo&rules=game&x=9d88m93d-rn1g0o1n.ln8dxenl-wlepmxn6.12vvj52q-38dezrzn.qj77mg3q

How to Participate

  • If on PC, install the mod API Gem Core (https://steamcommunity.com/workshop/filedetails/?id=1378549454) from the steam workshop. Enabling this mod in your server will make seed fields available in the world generation settings when creating a new file.
  • Copy the provided seed that you want to play on in order to generate that specific world. Input it in the seed field. The chosen world will proceed to generate (as long as Events are set to None).
  • If you're on Mac or Linux, the seeds provided will not work. As an alternative, there are .zip files provided containing the worlds that have already been generated. Simply extract the cluster_xxxx folders to the folder that contains your game worlds (this directory can be accessed easily by going to the world selection screen, clicking the wrench icon next to one of your saves, and selecting "open world folder").
  • Keep in mind that if using the .zip method, things such as suspicious marbles that are normally randomized whenever you regenerate the same seed will remain in the same location every time. If you wish to randomize these (for whatever reason), simply rollback to the beginning of the world.

How to Submit Runs

  • This is a closed submissions tournament; this means that any runs you submit will not be made publicly available until the end of the competition (unless you wish to make them public yourself). This is to encourage players to create new strategies in pursuit of better times, instead of simply trying to copy whatever strategy the #1 run happens to use at that time.
  • To officially submit a run, either DM a moderator of the leaderboards the video(s) alongside the run info (via the Discord server) or submit it via this form if you don't wish to contact anyone directly: https://forms.gle/Jy5F59hkY1FprK3T6 (If you have a Speedrun.com account provide your username, if not just whichever name you'd prefer to be displayed as)
  • Please remember to meet all of the video submission rules (don't make major edits or splices to your videos, show all the important info clearly, etc.)
  • The standard timing method for the runs on the leaderboards will be IGT (In-Game Time, i.e. the day clock). However, if the winning runs are deemed to be too close together, RTA without Loads will be used instead for the maximum fairness.

Categories and Prizes
SOLO:
1st Place Winner: $120 USD
2nd Place: $60 USD
3rd Place: $30 USD

DUO:
1st Place Winner: $90 USD (Split between both participants however they choose)

Additionally, we will be giving out THREE $20 USD consolation prizes. Each consolation prize will be granted to a random player who submitted a run but didn't win in any category.
(Any payments will be done via PayPal OR Steam gift cards)

NOTE: There is a 1 prize per person rule in this tournament. This means that if someone were to win a prize in both the solo and duo categories, said player would only get whichever prize happens to be bigger. The other prize would then be distributed between the next place winners in that same category.

If you have any questions about the tournament and/or the rules, feel free to contact a moderator. The tournament will run from November 15th, 2023 at 12 PM PST, until December 13th, 2023, at 4 PM PST.

SEEDS:

Spoiler

Seed A: 1690962706
This world contains a crock pot set piece with spoiled fish at the portal alongside 2 nearby wormholes. The wormholes grant quick access to important resources, such as the terrarium chest and spider dens, and they lead to other wormholes that likewise lead to even more important parts of the map like Pig King and Dragonfly, making every part of the map easily accessible from the start. This world is recommended for characters who need few resources to fight the boss.

Seed B: 3036343
This world has no less than 3 top hat boons, as well as resources like marble and living logs not requiring major deviations from the route to obtain, but the highlight of this world is the miner's camp set piece, containing a shadow manipulator and more, right next to the Pig King which in itself leads directly to the Dragonfly's arena and which is also easily accessible from spawn thanks to a wormhole that leads to the desert. All of that makes this world optimal for characters that benefit greatly from shadow magic.

Seed C: 1691193206
This world contains very easy access to less commonly used resources, as the spawn biome directly leads to a small swamp with plenty of reeds, and the wormholes near spawn allow players to quickly access volt goats, mandrakes, living logs, marble, tentacle spots, tier 3 spider dens, and more. The Dragonfly and Pig King biome are also a short distance away from spawn on foot, making this a very well-rounded world that is versatile for all characters.

Seed D: 4158452
The main highlight of this world is the presence of a set piece containing an alchemy engine next to the Dragonfly's arena. The desert is easily accessible thanks to a wormhole near the spawn portal that leads close to it, with Pig King nearby. Down the road not far from there the player will find a ham bat boon on the ground. This seed is ideal for characters that need to get geared up ASAP with tier 2 science to fight the boss of the challenge.

Seed E: 378606
The spawn biome in this world contains not one, but two walking cane boons from the get-go. A wormhole near the portal leads directly outside of the Dragonfly desert and very close to the Pig King. This is a no-nonsense world that allows players to quickly reach the fight with an extra speed advantage.

We hope to see you there!

How much can you win for being the cutest?

Sounds like a lot of fun, I hope the videos of the winners get posted. Last tournament the winners weren't posted to the forum which could of opened up interesting discussion I think.

this sounds super fun! but how does it work, do I have to record my run or do I have to broadcast it live? I've never participated in a speedrun like this sorry if it's a silly question

yes, you have to record your run (or provide a VOD if you performed it live) while meeting the rules written in the speedrun.com leaderboards for DST, then submit it via the submission form (you can find all the info in detail in the discord server)

It might be worth mentioning that the seeds chosen for this tournament were generated before the Hallowed Nights event went live which also affects the world generation, so anyone interested in participating should make sure to disable the event before generating the world. That or just download the world files provided alongside the seeds and put them in your game's folders, both do the trick equally well:)

Client mods allowed?

yes, based on the list of approved mods: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1UXHGsqkBIgTZn0IS6tfu-vvxnTSXIy1WE7j0Yk0nI0M/edit

tldr: nothing that gives more visibility, information, or facilitates/performs actions for the player; if in doubt just play without client mods

Seeding is essential - is this contest even possible on consoles?

Probably not :crushed:

A jailbroken ps4 or switch might let you move the .zip files over but that's about it, otherwise it's completely impossible for consoles to participate :(
