[Suggestion] Revisit the deconstruction yield of Bone Helm and Bone Armor

Recommended Posts

At the time that deconstructing these items was introduced, bone shards were still hard to amass for solo players. With the introduction of the Wicker refresh and resulting fish farms, this improved a lot. Now that hound teeth can be turned into bone shards, there is never going to be a lack of those ever again.

Fossil Fragments are the only non renewable ressource in DST, once fancy berry bushes become craftable. Deconstructing bone helm and armor into any amount of fossil fragments would be such an elegant and fitting solution as has been suggested many times.

I think fighting the fuelweaver for like 10 pieces max of a resource is probably some of the most annoying and unfitting effort-to-reward ratios i've seen. I'm not against fossils being renewable, but I would despise it if 10 pieces every 20 days + literallly entire fuelweaver fight was the way to do it

Getting fossils from deconstructing the Fuelweaver stuff would be neat, but I do find myself disagreeing that it would be an eloquent solution (or, really, a solution at all) to the non-renewability of fossils. You NEED fossils to summon the Fuelweaver and get his drops, meaning it doesn't solve the problem at all of all fossils being able to be removed entirely from the world in various ways, because if you run out of fossils then you can't summon the Fuelweaver in order to get more fossils.

So true. I'd rather have some kind of excavation and archeology minigame instead. Any maybe some fights for some priceless artifacts along with fossils.

I personally would like it, albeit as others have mentioned I do feel it would be better if this was treated as source rather than the source of fossil fragments. While I could see it being a "quick" (at least for DST resource standards) way of getting 20 fossil fragments per kill (as both the armor and helm drop 10 bone shards each at the moment), I don't feel it would be ideal for everyone to do so. I do feel acid rain could totally allow a mechanic for renewing fossil fragments in a nice way.

(Little tangent, but I personally wish they also tweaked the Fuelweaver's fuel drop to instead drop pure terror both on death and on drops, since I just feel that would be neat and fitting.)

Honestly, I hadn't even thought about this, but I still remember the trouble of getting fossil fragments in some older public worlds. You are totally right, tieing them to AFW loot doesn't fix this.
Acid rain doesn't really solve this issue either, since an AFW kill is required to trigger them.

A member on discord contributed the following suggestions. I'm reposting them with his permission:

  1. Make fossils drop from earthquakes very rarely and in rocky stalagmite biome only. Possibly alongside decontruction AFW loot into fossils. Note, if somebody wanted to farm 8 fossils quickly, they could use explosives and other means to trigger earthquakes underground.
  2. Make stalagmites regrow with normal rain instead, since that's how they form in reallife. This process should of course be appropriately slow.

How likely is this to happen? It seems that there are a fair number that you can get.

But I don’t disagree. I’m against resource extinction.
