Are They and Alter one being?

Recommended Posts

Lunar and shadow magic are usually treaten like two different power but recently I had thought that these powers could be complementar. Shadow side is more for creation/destruction when lunar side change and reorganize. There is an idea that these two side was once a one entity but later it was shattered into two (semingly) opposite beings.

I also noticed some interesting thing if we call for help psychological theory of Carl Gustav Jung. Every character in game could be considered as part of psyche:

Constant - all psyche

Alter - Ego (Alter Ego?) - Dominant aspect od consciousness

Wagstaff - Intelect - According to Jung people have four psychical function: two rational (intelect and emotions) and two irrational (perception and intuition). Slowy in time Ego started to like one function more than others. In modern world it's usually intelect.

Celestial Champion - Persona - It's a mask that people show to the Society. When Persona was destroyed (after defeating CC) Intelect betrayed Ego stealing "consciousness energy"

They - Self - Centre of psyche. They are usually treathen like pure evil but in this psychological metaphor Self want to be one again with consciousness but Ego pretend to be ruler of all psyche and hate Unconscioussnes (notice that gelstalts can destroy shadow creatures but shadows can't (or don't want to) destroy gestalts.

Charlie - Anima - Female aspect of male psyche (when  Animus is male aspect of female psyche). Currently on mission to summon self again and merge consciousness and unconsciousness (notice that Charlie also was in similar state like Constant. Her play is a great story of psyche individualization. She was shattered by society (Winona, Maxwell) then she died but Self revived her not to be a doll but to be a queen).

Ancient Fuelweaver - Shadow - part of psyche that Ego considered as unworthy and evil. Entire Ancient race could be considered as shadow.

And we have great story about psyche individualization.

Interesting and elegant take on DST's latest ("Moon" and Shadow) arcs via Jung's analytical psychology viewpoints. But there are flaws within and won't elaborate further (am sure others will).

Personally I believe "They" refers to the 2 Outer-Godlike 1-Eyed Eldritch Abominations: Alter ("Moon") and its Shadow-counterpart seen in Murals (invading & morphing the Ancients) plus Atrium's Portal after Charlie repairs and opens it.

PS: in a jokey manner, since there are 2x 1-Eyed entities, "them 2" makes for 2 eyes of... we'll leave that to everyone's imagination and amusement.

Wow! This is a very interesting theory! I see more that they are multidimensional creatures.

We know that They are powerful enough to move through time (this can be seen from the fact that Wanda's watch runs on horror fuel, Shadow Watcher was able to follow Wanda through time, and it is also possible that Willow was moved by Terrorbeak to set fire to the library ), which means they are definitely able to move along the w (time) axis.

Pugna said that Thron moved them to the world of stone and fire, and we also saw how They were summoned through the portal, which may indicate that they are able to move through the world, which means they (in theory) can be five-dimensional beings .

If we recall the ARG games in which Maxwell interacted with the players, Maxwell's quotes breaking the 4th wall (golden pickaxe), as well as Charlie's ability to leave comments in Winona's and Maxwell's quote files, this may indicate that They are at least 6 dimensional (if you count the ability to move in a non-universe game for 6 space).

In the films "Space Odyssey", as well as "Interstellar", They are possibly multi-dimensional creatures. It is worth noting that many characters that we know are able to somehow use another space, but are not able to fully move in them. For example, the horror fuel only helps Wanda move through time, the shadow part only helps Charlie influence the game code, but they are not able to move in them. This is because they use a part of Them that is able to give them the opportunity to somehow use an alternative axis, since for Them it is a normal axis through which they are able to move.

didn't wagstaff already manipulated nightmare fuel just look at his inventions that appear to be rip-offs of the divining rod and codex umbra.

I think of them as entities with powers that can alter creatures we have the shadow one, alter, the gnaw and one in the lava of the forge?

He had an interest in nightmare fuel in DS, but I’m pretty sure things like the radio were invented before the Divining Rod. But what invention is a rip-off if the Codex Umbra?
