Bad Updates Implodes Communities

Hi everyone, just to be absolutely clear, this IS NOT a rant topic, but rather my view on how a bad (or rushed) update can implode a community from within, creates "drama" or "discussions" that would never happened in the first place if the game state was decent enough or can be a turning point for the game devs. I don't know what happened in recent year with the game industry, but there's so much distance between some communities and the devs that is frankly absurd for today's standards.

Starting from way back in 2015, we had the "crime fest" in the Payday 2 game, in which, the players had to do secret challenges for almost a week to kinda unlock the update, some were harder than others, and Overkill (the studio behind the game) promised that the update would be free for all players, and after all the struggle players went for, thinking about the potential new weapons, heists, characters, skills etc, they got loot boxes. Needless to say, the absolute outrage was so big and so many players quit, that they removed this feature 8 months later.

In the summer of 2016, another big and one of my favorite games introduced a new way of playing, the "meet your match" update in which Valve broke the game  search for a long while and had some major balancing problems. I'm talking 9 x 2 matches with the team of 2 consisting of new players trying out the classes. Also it heavily shifted the gane in a competitive direction in a way that felt like a rushed. At the end of the day, it is still, 8 years later, considered THE worst update for many of the people that still play it (Summer update hits this year, let's just hope it fix the game).

More recent examples are the Overwatch 2 fiasco with the game promising a lot and delivering barely nothing new, no pve, no cosmetic transfer, and the list goes on, and bare in mind, this was in the making for YEARS, just for people to get their hopes up and then realize it was for nothing, the game would just be another pvp shotter with no campaign.

The ARK Survival Evolved situation with closing servers just to sell a remaster of the same game with the same stuff, that will have a lifespan of only 6 months, because the sequel is planned to be out on december this year. And now even some content creators are leaving the game or getting ban raiding the mods servers.

The Destiny 2 unbelievable flopped DLC that was Lightfall, to make a long story short, think about it this way: You watched all the Marvel superhero movies since 2008, and now, 10 year later, you are nearing the end of the "infinite saga", you've seen every movie, every interview with the directors, followed every leak site, you went to watch Infinity War and left the cinema with tears of joy, then, at the day of the released of the final movie of the saga, you and your friends made a promise to see it together, 10 years of waiting, the whole community anxious to see it, you're on the top of your seat to see "Engame"...

And you get Thor 2 : Dark worlds. This is what happened to Destiny 2, a mediocre narrative with a bunch of questionable weapon reworks and servers instability, just sparked a flame of disbelief in the community, so much so, that one of the most watched videos from the destiny community in the last month, was a rant video about the microtransaction scam that the game was becoming, it got 1,5 views as the writing of this text.

And to finish it all, this recent DST update proves to me that, some topics, dramas and bad behaviour can easily be prevented with a decent enough update or a clarity on communication, now dont get me wrong, It is not Kleis fault if some people cant act like proper human beings in a online game forum because of a game update, the problem is all on the players, but I think there is a way to prevent uproars like these that appeared here in the last month. No half baked content or event. 

This all said, thanks for reading until here, didnt had time to play the update at all but I know Klei will try their hardest to make the game enjoyable!

Well the updates didnt help but this whole board thing was started more recently.

Itll blow over. Maybe even next update if what klei says is true in not having the big picture.... the general feeling atm tho is unfortunetly "dont count on it"

While Yes some games have questionable and downright scummy things done (Ark Survival Evolved) not all game companies are that greedy and if you spend all your time thinking they are- you’ll miss out on some true Gems.

Let me use Sonic Origins Plus as an Example- At first glance this game seems WORSE than the 2004 release that was Sonic Mega Collection Plus right? I mean Sonic Mega had 20 playable games and only costed back then.. 20$

Origins Plus sells at 50$ and only features 16 games what a Ripoff right?!

You’d be a fool to immediately jump to that Conclusion-

Here are the differences: 

Mega Collection counted additional modes/game options as separate Games as part of its 20 game boasting- Knuckles in Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles, and the Blue Spheres Mode were ALL counted as separate games Isnt that 5 out of its promised 20? 

but wait wasn’t there also 4 games that had nothing to do with sonic in that collection? Flicky, The Ooze, Ristar, Comix Zone. Remove those 20 - 9 = 11

Now then Sonic Origins Plus boasts it has 16 games, and indeed it does!

Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles (Yes both games are considered one game for this collection) Sonic CD

And 12 Game Gear Games, Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic Chaos, Sonic Drift, Sonic Drift 2, Sonic Spinball, Sonic Triple Trouble, Sonic Labyrinth, Sonic Blast, Dr Robotniks Mean Bean Machine, Tails Skypatrol, Tails Adventure.

Wait you mean all 12 Game Gear games to EVER be released including the ones formerly exclusive to Japan are in this collection? Yes.. yes they are.

In Addition: while there is a “Blue Spheres” mode And having Knuckles playable in Sonic 2 are NOT counted as their own Games..

Unlike that other collection people keep comparing Origins to.

There’s also some completely brand NEW Spheres Stages designed exclusively for Origins with even more colors of spheres involved then the original game!

Theres a Mirrors Mode (play the entire game from left to right instead of right to left)

A Boss Rush Mode- (Fight all the bosses from this game in back to back order with only one life)

And a Missions Mode (Unique Objectives that were created for Origins Plus)

Lastly- Not only is Knuckles Playable in Sonic 2.. but Sonic, Knuckles, Tails & Amy Rose are playable in Sonic 1,2 3&K & CD.

So is Sonic Origins Plus worth paying 50$ for? Without a doubt absolutely!

however… people with ill-informed opinions are still going to compare it to Sonic Mega Collection (from 2004) & there will inevitably be people who jump to conclusions that Origins is a Ripoff compared to that 2004 game.

So what exactly is my point??

People are quick to judge things without trying them for themselves to form their own opinions.. they will ignore a game if it gets “Bad Reviews” without even giving that game its Fair chance or justified criticisms.

I have my complaints about DST: Such as a good majority of the content being themed around Multiplayer designed Boss Fights, or survival challenges being pushed aside in favor of base building mechanics and Mini-Games, but there is no denying that DST isn’t worth the 15$ Klei sells it for, This game is full of content.. and one bad update or one controversial skin change isn’t going to change that.

It's almost happend to me when EotS update release.

To this day, I still feel that the whole CC process is at odds with the rest of the world.

and also we still know nothing about "Them".
