Pausing to focus on specific resources

Recommended Posts

First of all, love the beta. The plants are my favorite part, I love everything about them.

However... there is something I'd want to ask.

There's been an almost consistent/awkward trend of introducing specific resources/materials and then... never expanding upon them.
Moon shards, for one. They've got a fair few uses but there's not actually a whole lot to use them on, unlike say, ropes, or boards.

I for one thought it would've been expanded on a bit more as the years went by. I was a bit surprised to find out this wasn't the case, and instead we got introduced to two entirely new resources brought in by the Moonstorm update!
I was also surprised to see these never went used again outside of that specific event...
I believe like, the latest hotfix made one of the new crafts use those items but it's not enough. A step forward, though!

I'm a bit fearful this trend will continue, what with all the new resources.
This includes Dreadstone but that was JUST added so I want to hold onto my hopes there.

I'm sure others can but this into better words below, but I'd love to see more down with the lesser expanded on resources.

It feels like there's a lack of focus. It's really odd seeing them jump from one update to the next adding new content and resources and then never touching it again, even though a lot of previous content could be expanded upon with newer updates, It's the same with New/Old ocean content, Archives, and of course The Moonstorm where they would benefit greatly from being touched up, and connected more into gameplay. All this new stuff feels very disconnected.

It's a similar problem with Daywalker, Imo. Why does he drop two boss specific resources? Was one not enough?

You put into words what I've been feeling this whole time! I've personally been very disinterested over the past year and a half because we got so much content, but not a lot of depth. The stuff we do have in the game right now has a lot of potential but imo it hasn't been fully realized yet.

Of course at the end of the day, the folks at Klei have the last say so whatever direction they decide to go is their choice.

I feel like adding depth would also make players consider actually going out of their way to find such new content. Like imagine if treasure hunting from pearl had better loot, people would seek out the treasures more often. It's small, but it makes good content even better by giving it more versatility

I’m hopeful that with these new materials in the past updates they will be used in more recipes down the line as the content update arc progresses, however I do agree I wish the older lunar items were polished a bit and given more uses.

I agree.

One might say “Klei might expand upon this” but they have a history of adding whole new resource crafts with limited viability. Like obsidian spear in Shipwrecked: now you can fight hound waves and accidentally burn down your base.

And yes, there is often a lack of depth. They might add a new biome and then players are incentivized to just do the following:

  1. Find out where it might spawn
  2. Go there
  3. loot
  4. Never or rarely return

DST doesn’t lack content. But it lacks gampley cohesion and depth.

The best thing they did for DS was to allow you to connect all three worlds. That was amazing. Maybe not thematically coherent or anything, but it was amazing to start out in Hamlet and then use that gear to conquer Shipwrecked. (And concquering “Forest” or whatever it’s called then became trivial.)

Obviously DST doesn’t have a disconnected world problem. But considering what they did for DS there is some hope that they will make everything more cohesive.

PS: Great work on the dreadstone gear so far though. It’s a great upgrade to the eyemask.
