What do you think of this Maxwell "rework"?

So I know mods are kinda taboo here, but I love quality of life mods. I was browsing the workshop recently, and came across this Maxwell rework mod. Typically I don't touch character/character rework mods because they're either extremely overpowered or underpowered. But this mod is amazing. I think it's almost a perfect rework for Maxwell. It establishes a clear gameplay loop, solid downsides that are FUN, and a unique playstyle that contributes something mostly unique.

The thing I think this mod does especially well is change the sanity dynamic. It doesn't change anything fundamental to the sanity system, but it actually makes sanity management engaging, rewarding, and challenging. I'm not entirely sure on Klei's stance on adopting mods into their core game, but I know some communities benefit from this immensely, like Project Zomboid for example. Normally I'd be against it since there are so so so many trash mods on the workshop, but this is very quality, and I think this has potential to be the best character refresh if it could actually come to fruition. But of course everyone has different preferences, so this is just my opinion.

I implore you all to try the mod, or at least check out the mod page. Overall, it provides a fresh, fun, challenging, and engaging experience for Maxwell that is the antithesis of his gameplay currently.

I should note that this is not my mod, and I am in no way affiliated with it. I just haven't been this impressed with the quality of a mod in awhile so I've felt inspired to share it and (low chance) maybe even shine some light on it for Klei.

Haven't tried the mod in actual gameplay, but description seems good. The only thing is that, unlike all other reworks & characters (except Warly, Wormwood, Wurt and Wes), downsides were given, especially 75% damage is pretty bad because unlike, as example, Wendy attacking along with Abigail, you can't do anything about it. Adding 20% or 25% more damage when using dark sword would be fine to compensate tho, after all it's a shadow weapon. Codex umbra losing durability is annoying, but not that bad I guess.

75% damage reduction encourages you to use minions or ride beefalo. The book losing durability means getting nightmare fuel is a bit more challenging. Plus, he gets 2x damage toward nightmare creatures, so his physical damage penalty isn't too bad. Though as a boss fighter, he probably does lack a bit of power.

the backpack one was very very nice and has been requested something like that exist for a little bit, as the gathering part is a big complaint i've heard from players after spending so long chopping and digging.

i definitely enjoy the aspect of leaving behind the shadow puppets. it's like a really fun part of the Gorge, and makes it feel more engaging to be able to multitask rather than just standing and watching, which the players i'm with usually perfer to do rather than joining in the chopping/digging/mining.

 

really hope we get aspects of this mod. the codex being a magic research station maxwell can use to have early access to shadow magic is really great too.

Its meant to incentivize sentry puppets. Im playing it and its fun. Then again I love pain so yeah

Hi, thanks for mentioning my maxwell shadows mod @Karitha Of course it still work fine (if I don't update a mod anymore or there are known problems, I usually write this at the top of description or into a discussion)

I read the description of the mod from the first post.This mod has more changes to maxwell himself (like magic), than my mod (mine does only add settings to existing values).
The idea to directly tell the shadows what they should do is very very good. But except for this one feature I would say that my improvements for shadows are better, this is of course my personal taste. For a short overview you can see the GIFs on my modpage or read the description.

I always think that modders should share ideas and code, to get the best mod in the result (of course crediting each other).
But of couse it is also fine if the users have options between different mods.
 

Played with it more I LOVE IT! I thought it was good but its really good! The animations are really nice and really well done! The Codex has become a mid game early game best friend and of course...

We have backpack shadows!
