Oxygen production: the R.OXY

Recommended Posts

Good evening, I am proud to present you my recent creation, the R.OXY (Rust OXYgenator [I extend my most sincere thanks to @babba and @Yobbo for the basic ideas that lead to this naming]) or Roxy for a closer naming to that of a person.

This self sustaining and self powering machine runs by consuming the big pile of iron oxide in the starmap more commonly known as oxidized asteroid field, turning the rust into oxygen, sand, rot piles, meat, energy, table salt, etc...

Let's run some numbers and share some info, starting with the space part of the build.

An OAF (oxidized asteroid field) is a space POI which can be mined by a rocket with a drillcone, it's composed mostly of rust (80%) and solid carbon dioxide (20%), both of which are solids, so a rocket only needs a solid cargo bay to mine the OAF, the simplest of rockets which can mine is a sugar engine rocket, giving enough height to place a cargo bay, the drillcone and the space farer module. This rocket has a modest speed of 1.23 hexes per cycle and a range of 6, so it can reach and come back from an OAF 2 hexes away from the orbit of a planetoid. This is the best of cases, in reality a better engine is gonna be needed to reach the OAF, which can be fuelled with the byproducts of the ROX (petroleum engines).

The OAF can have a mass of 54 - 81 t and a refill rate per cycle of 540 - 1620 kg which is good because the ROX consumes 450 kg per cycle of rust which is close to the minimum of actual rust produced by the OAF which is 432 kg per cycle, so in the worst of cases the ROX won't run at 100% but that can be fixed by mining other POIs which contain rust. To minimise diamond consumption only 570 kg per cycle are mined from the POI (540 in the worst case), only consuming 28.5 kg of diamond per cycle (for every kilogram of diamond used 20 kilograms of material are mined), which is the only input of the ROX and can be partially covered by recycling the byproducts of the ROX.

Continuing with the rust deoxidizer part of the design, it is a self sustaining and self powered hydra design. Rust and salt are turned into oxygen, chlorine and iron ore. The chlorine is used by exuberant dasha saltvines to produce salt, the sand consumption is covered by crushing the produced salt and the rest is used by the rust deoxidizer. Oxygen comes out for your duplicants and iron is fed to plug slugs (yes please fed them) to power everything, produce meat and egg shells. Power can be stored in rocket batteries or in normal ones.

Cooling, the co2 mined from the OAF is cold enough that the difference in temperatures to 22 degrees is close to the power of 1 1/2 wheezeworts which should keep everything cool, the rust, salt and sand are circulated through the rust deoxidizer to absorb as much heat as possible.

Numbers:

Power:

around 500W* consumed and 960W produced.

Resources consumed:

28.5 kg of diamond per cycle (minimum 290 radbolts collected per cycle) [other byproducts can be turned into refined carbon by hatches]

Resources produced:

570 g/s Oxygen

2880 Calories per cycle (the plug slug ranch should be more complex than shown)

114 kg per cycle of co2 (can be turned into petroleum for a rocket by 5.7 normal slicksters or molten ones)

16 kg of extra rust per cycle

10 g of table salt per day (enough to salt two meals)

14 kg of sand or salt

egg shells

13.333... kg of rot pile per cycle

*minimum 480W extra are needed for a radbolt generator, it can be less if exposed to more radiation.

Mining notes:

A trip to the OAF can be done every 21 cycles to match consumption if using a small cargo bay, less visits are needed if a bigger cargo bay is used.

generating 28.5 kg of diamond during 21 cycles produces 598.5 kilograms of diamond which is less than the drillcone can hold (1 ton).

temperature:

Spoiler

Not actual temperatures, the top should be kept around 22° celsius to prevent the solid nuclear waste from melting.

Radiation:

Spoiler

Important note: to keep the 250 rad requirement the nuclear waste tiles at the top need a mass of: 1400kg for the sides and 5200kg for the top, to generate this amount a fully running reactor needs 10.8 cycles. the radiation from space isn't needed.

Final note: it can be a bit expensive, it needs resources you only get after midgame, it gives plug slugs a meaning, dupes need to harvest the dasha saltvines, groom the plug slugs and crush the salt. But it can be a fun way to keep a mini base in a planetoid running from only rust.

Have a nice evening- Wait- it's already day... uh. Have a nice day!

Have you considered utilising grubgrubs to rub the dasha saltvines to boost growth speed / efficiency? Airflow tiles and farm tiles in the shape of two /s should allow the grubgrubs to reach the tile by the farm tile.

Where F is the farm tile, X is the 'rub spot', D is the other dasha saltvine growth spot, A is an airflow tile. 33% less sand used for the same return.

That is a good idea but isn't really necessary, enough sand and salt are produced that the whole thing generates an excess. Also I have taken into account the amount of movement critters have in the ranch to prevent lag. The plug slugs literally are two steps away from their sleeping spot. But great suggestion.

I might make a dlc to use the co2 for the 5.7 slicksters, that would make more byproducts and food.

tuxii industries appreciates your application to our naming department. However, we're afraid we'll have to politely decline. Our product names are bad enough as it is.

I would like to differ, here at Infinite Blue facilities we appreciate every costumer's criticism and recommendations, given this nature of the facility the new name of the product has been selected from part of the suggestions. I would also like to add that your product naming is not as substandard as you may think and that industrial espionage isn't a welcome activity in facility grounds, please depart in an orderly manner to the nearest exit, thank you.

-Infinite Blue facilities.

Ps: *dies laughing* this is a joke.
