Tired of starting over on every update

Recommended Posts

With each update, we are forced to start a new game, I haven’t flew into space there yet, I started it five times with each update, it’s bad that it makes the current save incomplete. While I build a rocket, a new update is already coming out, I read the changes and understand that if I don't start with something else, then I won't have the full content. You should consider making updates in such a way that they complement the content for games already started.

With update 483944 I have to start again, isn't it

I would like the updates to be arranged in such a way that they would introduce new content and changes to the existing save

@kvinks It's a sad story with the games saves. I hope there will be more DLCs, but I fear the sadness with saves will continue in the future + perhaps breaking mods. For the developer and newbies to the game its great, new stuff, fixes or changes can be implemented fast.

The downside for players is that long term saves either break at some point or too much content is missing in a long term save file.  The way Klei works is a time, creativity and human resource advantage for the developer. I believe they try their best with their resources at hand. :p Still, the player pain remains.

While I understand your frustration, it's important to know that that's the nature of the game when you participate in an early access release.  It's doubly so for ONI because the developers are churning out new updates once a month.  That said, there are a few pointers to keep in mind.

  • You don't have to start over if you're willing to play without whatever new few feature was just added to or changed within the game.
  • You can get around some changes by using Sandbox Mode and manually adding elements, critters, or plants that would otherwise be absent from your current save.

I don't think this update added something new you will not find in your current save (you will still need to research new buildings). New map features/planetoids need a new start either way(for spaced out. Vanilla didn't have any worldgen changes) but that doesn't mean you can't continue on your current map. The worldgen changes for SO are about new starting planetoids, not new planetoids in every start.

it's not only about the content as a specific thing, but about leveling the balance, more realistic game mechanics, because this does not appear in the saves, does it. Well, for example, with the new patch Radiation now kills food poisoning, slimelung, and zombie spore germs .. because this will not be in my save?

Everything that isn't listed as "worldgen" should be updated in new saves once Steam had downloaded the update.

Why wouldn't it be in your save? You mean you could use it earlier? Maybe... But it will not be missing. The game is in development and it says so every time you open it (assuming you play SO if we are talking about radiation). Nothing is set to stone yet.

Unfortunately these new updates will all be in your save. Currently after each game update everything will work in the new way. That means your old buildings behave in new game mechanics. Only worldgen change will require a new start because these only happens at that moment.

You can still run your old saves. The update will only break something you designed for old game mechanics (maybe automation change or when a building behave differently). For example, the food preservation change make old infinite food storage system not working. You have to rebuild the system otherwise your old colony will soon have rotten foods.

Usually I run the game in stable branch. I currently runs a 1600+ cycles colony and it survive several updates so far. I still can build these new buildings in last few updates. The differences between old save and new start is the process to get these new buildings (or new research in this new update).

You need to read the changes, load your old save to check if the games effect the old saves or not. The recent update reintroduced worldgen back to the system and that is the only thing that I found will not be effecting the old saves, everything else from last few updates appears on my old save (new toilet, new rocket parts/remove rocket parts, that new research station replaced the old in rocket research station, etc). Again, you don't NEEED to restart a new colony if you don't want to, you only NEEED to restart a new colony if you WANNNNT to
