StarSquid
Is there any way to calculate the threshold at which a liquid will start causing pressure damage to nearby tiles? I know that less-dense fluids need less pressure to start causing damage, but is there a formula to find that threshold?
Candide
No. In StreamingAssets\elements\liquid.yaml is a list of elements and the property maxMass defines at which mass the element can damage tiles. Most are at 1000kg.

biopon
That's a great analysis by @rezecib but weren't those rules relaxed quite a bit since? I know I can keep more than 6 deep water in sandstone. Sandstone in particular seems to start showing damage somewhere above 1700kg of water; you need a very tall column to achieve that.
