selim149
hello everyone! i am both new to the game and to the forums, and i would like some assistance. When i create a colony, i always build the buildings i need in whatever free space i could find and before cycle 50 everything gets out of hand. can soomeone teach me how to keep things tidy? MorsDux
Just do the opposite, you seem to know what the problem is
Junksteel
Hi there! Welcome to the forums. Posting a screenshot of your actual base will likely generate a lot of response and good useful advices. Generic tips can be found spread in youtube, in the wiki or even here in the forums but that will require some active reading from your part. hypoeffort
Try looking at the rooms interface. It will give you a basic rundown of what to build for certain things and give you some organization. Its near the top right on the same line as your power/temperature/oxygen overlay.
mathmanican
Here are some threads/thoughts on this topic. Have fun reading. DemainaNyx
The more you play, the more you will figure out a design you like. In general though, you want to try and group building together for room bonuses or because you want to avoid an issue. I like to make a tri column base with a 3 tile ladder area between each column (see image below). Each floor is 20 tiles wide and 4 tiles tall. With a door placed 1 tile in, that gives me rooms that are exactly 64 tiles in size which matches the max size for most rooms (bathroom, bedroom, etc) Spoiler I'm actually some 400 cycles into this base, but a lot of the early game stuff still exists. My refrigerators are still where my original food box was placed. The lavatory is one floor above where my outhouses were. Those oxyferns started one floor higher but have been lowered. That's my original crop of meal lice in the top center. That's the original coal generator, wood burner, research station, advanced research station, and rock crusher. That pitcher pump in the bottom left originally was a larger puddle of water but I've since contained it to that tiny area. A lot of the placement is intentional. The hot stuff like coal generators and batteries are away from my food source. That row of cots acts as a buffer to prevent too much heat from the research area from overheating my plants. My polluted water tank is off to the way left where there are plenty of bottle emptier to ensure that water is dealt with immediately so it doesn't off gas too much in my base. I've even specifically placed rooms like beds, mess hall, bathroom, and farms up high in my base so that they are always in oxygen whereas my arbor trees, generators, and oxyferns are lower because they don't mind the carbon dioxide. Your base can look completely different from mine and yet still work perfectly, so it's best to figure out what works for you are go with it. I like this mostly uniform design whereas others like a more natural one. I've seen these cookie cutter layouts but I've also seen people have really tall, thin rooms because they had an open spot and wanted to fill it with something. Don't feel bad about learning. We all had to at one point so if you lose a base because of whatever reason, just try to learn from it next time and enjoy.

Hi, and welcome. Most people solve this by having sort of a standard layout. These are vastly different, but they provide structure and direction. What you do here is really a matter of personal preference, as lots of things can work well. For example, I like a regular, rectangular base, space for 12 beds right of the printer, great hall above that, exit and exo-suits below and initial food production below that. On the left of the printer, washroom, power above, storage and base cooling below. One vertical ladder right of the printer in the base. But that is just me and while I have probably done this more than 20 times by now, it still varies on each game. And there are revision steps. You cannot get everything right at the start, that just does not work. Also, stay on 3 dupes until you have food and oxygen solved for a longer time. You can expand faster later, when you have an intuition what works and what does not. Core of my current base at cycle 3000 or so: Spoiler
