Will OOB Abuse in the Caves be Addressed?

Recommended Posts

I would say that surface Out of Bounds abuse has been, for the most part, been taken care of in the RoT beta. Trying to successfully OOB yourself into the ocean is no only extremely difficult to do, failure to do so puts you back on land with some rather harsh penalities (Max Health being capped, being 100% wet, and the player dropping half their hotbar items into the ocean).

However, there's nothing like this for the caves. The player can freely walk to and from the void, /rescue still works, and there's no penalties to doing this. It's an easy way to get the Atrium Maze, which is incredibly valuable since it's how you reset the Ruins.

That's why I propose the following:

  • Max Health Cap Reduction (like the surface)
  • Being forced back to the closest piece of land (like the surface)
  • You lose all of your sanity (instead of being 100% wet; and sanity is needed for the Sanity Gates in the Atrium)
  • A grogginess effect (ie. what happens to the player if they've been forced to sleep)

I'm debating on whether or not items should drop into the void, because all items in the void are destroyed, like Krampus Sacks, but not Hutch's Fishbowl or the Ancient Key (they TP to the closest piece of land). If items did not get destroyed in the void, it could open up the potential of OOBing a boss into said void for free loot, which is probably something we want to avoid.

Whatever it may be, some sort of deterrent/prevention system to OOBing oneself in the caves would be nice, considering that surface OOBing has such a system in place.

Side note: Is it possible to address items from dropping into the void in the first place? @SplOrange reported this bug here where Ancient FW died too close to the edge and this loot fell into the void

What do other people think?

Or a simple option would just be smacking the player back to land.

Have the borders of the caves go back to being strong so items and players don't fall in.

Though for a more complex option, I like the health and sanity reduction, and would enjoy a little animation for it. (Going OOB in the ocean has a unique animation. How cute!)

If only critical items such as Hutch's bowl, and player items (when a player dies in the void), are returned from the void, then that problem would be mostly fixed since the main purpose of killing things is for loot. I don't think it should be possible to just push something out of bounds for free loot, even if it's something as basic as a rabbit. I wouldn't mind if player items were also lost forever since OOB is almost always intentional.

The only major problems I can think of from this are the Ancient Guardian and Ancient Fuelweaver, people care less about their drops and more about resetting the ruins.

I can't think of a better solution to the Guardian and Fuelweaver than what -Variant said; teleport them back to land. If the player's forcing things to glitch out of bounds, then something teleporting back in wouldn't look out of place.

Yea, that could work too. The other penalties were an insurance in case world-gen gave you an Atrium Maze close enough to the main cave land. That way you couldn't just OOB yourself to the maze for free.

How I can be OOB?

OOB is out of Bounds.

Meaning you're walking outside the intended play area.

You can get there via some bugs, or exploits in the game.

One would be using fences to push yourself through the border.

Thank you for your answer. I saw somewhere on a server a people what did  make with stone walls, gates and statues a building what can get you across the border. But when I tested it on my game this is not working so I thought it was fixed. But I can test your variation from the fences as you said :)

It gets more cursed the longer you look at it

To be fair, this screenshot is from when the textures were bugged. They're vertically stretched in that image.

You got a link for that?
