After much playing around with boats and several harrowing experiences with them in general due to my lack of skill, i now present the questions i have to ask:

- How exactly does steering a boat work?

- How do you time your anchor drop such that you aren't too far from the shore, but don't crash as well?

- How much would be the most reasonable number of masts to fit a raft I plan on turning into a mobile base (with Alchemy engine, chests, crock pot, etc.)

- Does mast placement affect speed?

1. think of it as turning around but a lot slower

2. think of how fast you are going and where you're gonna be in 3 seconds. If you can, slow down by using an oar or hoisting the masts.

3. 2 is good enough but 4 makes it faster and harder to not hit stuff.

Practice a few shore landings and after that you can gauge accurately when to drop anchor.    Another method to use is have an L shaped harbor, move in parallel to the land instead of going towards it directly, that is even easier because you have plenty of time to adjust.

When you get close, drop the anchor, take down the sails and use the oar to fine tune the distance. To make a sharp turn at sea, drop the anchor, then set the new heading, then pull up the anchor after the sails have moved.

-you click, and the boat will go in the general direction of your click, just like walking your character with the LMB by holding it down, but slower.

-It's generally safer to drop it early, and if you're too far from shore, you can use the oar while the anchor is down to get closer without momentum

-if you can still place more, it's not enough
jk place two north of the boat, so their sails don't obstruct anything.

When approaching land, drop anchor and lower your sails, use the paddle to slowly approach land, when you're really close paddle away from land to nullify your speed. Paddle once or twice to get close enough to land then drop anchor.
