Allergic reactions and insane stress spikes

Recommended Posts

I noticed an abnormal and sudden decrease in food, and also noticed one of the dupes had spiked to 100% stress. I had them do a few top priority tasks earlier for renovations, but nothing that would take them well over the top like that. Actually, besides that dupe, everyone was at 0% stress.

That affected dupe was spiking stress very, very quickly. In a situation like this, where we are always too busy to keep checking stress levels every cycle (which we already know very well how to prevent), things can snowball very quickly. Now, i did have allergy medication, the problem was i couldnt get the dupe to take it no matter what, for a variety of reasons. Mainly because he was way too busy eating all the food and being very silly..

After investigating a bit and putting up with all the crap the dupe was doing, i followed him around for a while and figured some other dupe, for some reason, had dropped a buddy bud seed indoors, and that was what was causing him the allergies. A seed. It was hard to spot, as at the time i was doing some renovations indoors and the floors were a bit messy. The allergies were triggering from some 4-5 tiles away. So i locked him up in the dungeon until he realized what he had done and someone else cleared that crap.

So, a dupe that gets an allergy will go crazy so fast (1-2 cycles?) we wont probably notice until its too late, and we cant give him allergy medication while hes going rampage. Id even say he will go crazy even before he has a chance to get to it. At that point, we can deal with the allergy source, but that dupe becomes a big liability if hes destructive, binge eater, vomiter or anything that will disrupt normal days for everyone else. All this with very little or no warning. I think that makes allergy medication a bit... useless as a cure - even prevention, 1.2 cycles is... not ideal.

So, are allergic dupes a big no, just adding to the already hefty list of negative traits? Maybe. As long as we only let them go out all suited up and never plant any buddy buds indoors, which makes me sad, theyll be fine. But why would i want to take allergic dupes instead of being able to plant buddy buds? And having someone make a bunch of pills just for him? Well, i guess he could make them himself, getting busy not doing something else.

Now, i think this could use some adjustment. Lowering the stress increase and have them reliably go chew a tablet by themselves, just like they do food. Chances are it wont happen very often, so those would do nicely. But we still cant plant buddy buds indoors.

Weve come a long way from the days slimelung was lethal, as an example. Maybe someday dupes will gain some immunity over time to several ailments, not making them completely immune to them, but just reducing the chances of them getting it over and over - lets say they dont become super dupes, just smarter, better avoiding certain hazardous things.

So much for equal opportunity employment :(

As for said dupe, well... I really want to plant buddy buds inside for everyone else, which total to more then just one, so he is in a tight spot. Such a shame.

Seriously: Kill it!

An allergic Dupe is beyond any help you can give it. It will destroy your colony if it is left alive. You should have never printed it in the first place. If you can reload your save file then do it. Otherwise lock it up in a room and wait until it's dead. Allergic Dupes are just too dangerous.

and this is kinda ridiculous :D allergy is more dangerous than any other negative trait. lol

I remember one of the devs saying allregy is a bit too strong now. As for dealing with it i had to place airlocks next to my bristle farms, get rid of all buddy buds or restrict access for the allergic dupe to them and on top of that give all my dupes the farmhand job to increase chances for seeds (he still gets allergic reaction once in a while).
Not to mention that the dupe is not allowed to do farm jobs and operate jobs (so he doesn`t walk to the slime biome for clay and pass by a buddy bud).

Good to know i'm not THAT crazy, after all, seeing that some agree that allergic dupes are a huge liability.

I ended up changing my mind, not planting any buds indoors and keeping the dupe. He is one of the starters, i just had missed the small allergy detail when i picked him, also i didn't quite know it was this hardcore, since i only came back to ONI recently.

Now that the indoors floor are clean and i'm sure there are no murderous flowers inside, he's fine. I did lock him up in the dungeon (i meant it to be a "permanent" thing...), but got soft and let him out. Outdoors he'll be always suited up, so it should be fine. But if he screws up again, i'll toss him in the nearest lava pool. .

Allergic dupes does not deserve their own lives. It needs to get self removed from existence. Let the lousy chicken dig down into a hole and get suffocated in there for just a little bit of contribution to the base. That way things are much better.

Duh, why should such a thing exist, even? World is a messy place.

This is great!  I'm sorry that you had such a difficult time with your allergies, but the posts were definitely worth the read!
