mirrormind
i'm assuming enlightenment is the status effect you can over you sanity metre where the eye gradually opens , i think it's only in proximity to the gestalts that it the eye can fully open . when it opens the gestalts will form bodies to stand and watch you sometimes , and will change shape to rush at you . the eye being open also causes a circular fog to form over the screen , but otherwise the main thing it does is make the character stare up at the moon the moon being an eye has been foreshadowed since the moonlens , which are also eyes

The drawing of the moon in the metheus puzzle looks like an eye. I think this enlightment/lunacy is suppose to be derealization - in contrast to insanity. That's why the screen is covered by fog. I think I can make some connection to some elements of the moon biome and to this mental state. The moon biome has glasses and in my language we describe derealization like you look through a glas plate or fog - we call it "Glasscheibengefühl" (glas plate feeling); I don't know how English people describe it. Yeah the eye theme is fitting. I hope you can understand my explanation
Pelontriques
afaik, derealization is a dissociation thing. it's entirely possible that the characters are dissociating because of the horrors they've seen. boy howdy.
Terra B Welch
I like to call it the sleep meter, and the more it fills, the more "awake" you are. I believe someone else called it awakening when you're in the full awake state.
Rellimarual
I guess it makes sense because the moon has always been associated with insanity, but all this terminology from experimental psychology is the last thing I expected from DST!
Monkey Cups
I spawned in a beefalo on the moon island, and if you get hit by the Gestalt even the beefalo has a lethargic walk animation if you're riding it. Getting hit twice seems to put the characters to sleep.
