Personally I think, that Shadow Charlie isn't as innocent as we think. Most of us think that Monster Charlie plans everything and controls her better counterpart in some way. But there is one thing what many have missed. Both part of Charlie wanted Throne. If Shadow Charlie had no interest in ruling she would just leave after releasing Wilson. But no, she decides to pick up the Throne and gonna sit on it as a queen. Then Monster Charlie decides to take an advantage and inner fight begin.

The shadows not only kills, they assimilate some beings too, releasing his most perverse side.

Crawling Horror, Swimming Horror & Terror Beak are products of the ancient civilization under the effects of the shadows.

Even Maxwell still under the effects at some degree:

"Maxwell's extended reign on the Nightmare Throne altered him in ways that are not yet fully understood. He continues to rely heavily on his tome, the Codex Umbra, as a result." (Vignette's Description)

I have a question about the clockworks, we know by Maxwell's quotes that he made them even when examining the broken clockworks:

Broken Clockworks (1)- "There's a reason I never finished that."
Broken Clockworks (2)- "That one was a jerk."
Broken Clockworks (3)- "Didn't like that one's face.

But when examining Damaged Rook he says: "The builders have left it in a state of abandonment."

Can someone explain? Did the ancients construct these clockworks first and Maxwell just continued their work? Or am I missing something completely obvious?

I think most people agree that he stole the design from the ancients. So the ancients made them first and Max later found the broken one and fixed them. Well that's how i always looked at it.

As JimmyJam said, apparently, looks like the clockworks were made since long time ago (before the coming of Maxwell in the shadow throne). And basically, Maxwell made the new ones using the antique remains (AKA reverse engineering).

So, unless something is missing or we get some retcon (Example: Ewecus during Maxwell's reign in the last updates of Don't Starve), there's no more info about it by now.
