Sanity Problems

Recommended Posts

I'm not even sure if I'm posting in the right board...

Anyway, I own the ps4 version of Don't starve. (Is there any differences?)

This one time I had jsut set up a good base, I had enough food due to the rabbits and beefalo. I was set, except for my sanity. It kept on dropping, and I noticed if you make new prototypes, you gain your sanity back. I was jsut about to make a crockpot, but then died from the shadow tick. I survived at least 26 days total.

I didn't have any webs on me, my stone was running out too. Could somebody give me feedback/suggestions as to how to survive without losing sanity? And where is the best place to live? Also, how do I deal with the deerclops and walruses?

PS4 version and the PC version aren't that different and are identical in terms of gameplay, don't need to worry there.

For sanity, picking flowers is a good way to maintain it as each flower picked restores +5 sanity. Gather 12 flowers and you can make a garland which will give a small passive sanity regeneration bonus while you're wearing it. It's not as good as the other clothing options that regain sanity but it's cheap and helps you get by the first days. Strawrolls are also a good way to regain sanity, using one will regain 33 sanity at the cost of losing some hunger after skipping the night. If you have the resources to make drying racks you can then make Jerky, which also restores sanity when eating them.

Usually I'm not a huge fan of using the wiki for this game but sanity is one of those things where it'll destroy you if you don't know how things affect it. The wiki has a chart on what actions may increase or decrease sanity, may be helpful in the long run,

As for things like Deerclops, as you learn how to properly kite and kill some of the weaker enemies bosses usually have to same combat nature except they have a lot of health of course. It just comes naturally as you play longer.

For sanity:

  • experiment with mushrooms and their effects when raw/cooked
  • make fancy dressing (top hat is quite good)
  • pick flowers (dancing naked in the rain does not improve it though :-/ )
  • pig followers increase sanity when nearby (especially at night)
  • avoid eating spoiled food
  • avoid evil things
  • don't stand in darkness (Please, for the love of Maxwell, don't stand in darkness)

For deerclops, your safest bet is finding a distant distraction and kiting him there. When he's busy with that, run away and you're good. If you mastered sanity, you can try to fight him using the good ol' hit-run strategy (like pigmen but syncronised with the attack period). That method works for most things, not for bearger and dragonfly though.

For the hunter party, place decoy prey (e.g. followers, spider den). Take the hounds out first and then chase the father down until he can't run anymore.

If you kill the walruses (easy with a boomerang and help) you can get the Tam O' Shanter which keeps you warm (?) and gives a nice sanity bonus, plus it lasts a really loooooong time. Plus you can make a walking stick out of the tusks which helps a lot with getting around, and some people fight with it to help kiting.

Also if you have access to a lot of silk:

Catch butterflies-->Plant butterflies-->Catch more butterflies-->Pick the flowers and repeat for endless sanity. And you can build a bee box near those flowers and cook some taffy in a crock pot with the honey.

The hunter cap acts as a winter hat.

Also, killing and eating butterflies helps restore a lot of health with little efforts.

Butterflies best food in the game. Like easy jerky. Get food and health / sanity and they're everywhere.

People have already given great tips on your other questions, but I noticed this one got skipped:

And where is the best place to live?

This is ultimately up to you, your character, and your playstyle. Some people like to live right in the middle of the map, so they have access to most biomes quickly. Some people like to live tucked away in a corner, like their own little private island. Some people like to live amongst pig villages, or near the Pig King and Glommer. Some people like to live amongst Beefalo.

My personal preference is to explore for several days until I find these things:

  • Pig King/Glommer
  • Swamp
  • Desert
  • All wormholes
  • At least one Beefalo herd
  • At least one walrus

Only then do I decide to build. Reasons:

  • Pig King/Glommer

Glommer provides goop which is excellent fuel for Flingomatics. When killed, he drops wings, which are used to craft the Old Bell. The Pig King accepts trades, and gives gold in return. It depends on where they and everything else are for whether or not I'll build amongst them. I always want to know where they are, but I don't need them on a daily basis.

  • Swamp

The swamp is a grand ol' time... watch as the residents fight amongst themselves and collect their spoils! Silk, spider glands, tentacle spikes and/or spots, frog legs, fish. Mushrooms grow heavily in swamps, and it's the only place reeds are found. Reeds are required for a birdcage, darts, Wickerbottom's books, etc etc. Occasionally I like to build in the patch of forest that springs up in the middle of the swamp... depends on how the rest of the map is laid out. I often find a touchstone in the swamp also.

  • Desert

I've got nothing to do during Summer besides mine rocks and harvest tumbleweeds. Sure it's a few seasons away, but I like to plan ahead. I focus on the desert because at least I'll get a bit of variety in scenery, and can obtain additional loot. I never build in the desert because flaming tumbleweeds aren't much fun.

  • All wormholes

Well OK, maybe not ALL of them, but at least 3 out of 4 sets. Sometimes I build in the middle of the map, but my preference is to build somewhere else and use wormholes for quick travel across the map. If I'm really lucky, I'll have one close by my base and it will lead to one or more of the things in this list.

  • At least one Beefalo herd

Early game, they're my bros for taking out hounds I don't want to bother with. Before winter hits, I want their wool at the very least, and will likely kill a few to try to get a horn. Late game, I regularly cull the herd as my meat supply. To me, this is the absolute worst place for building a base though. Beefalo mate like crazy over time and their herds are a nuisance to have overrunning your base late-game.

  • At least one walrus

Tam-o-Shanter and Walking Cane. Sounds like you already know about those though =)
