Chumbles42
TL;DR version - I'm upset about my asteroid being slowly ripped apart and would like abyssalite to be meteor-proof. Full story: About 450 cycles into a leisurely exploration of my asteroid, I have moved my Dupes into the remains of a Slime biome that we just shelled out as we turned it all into algae and oxygen. While the Dupes tended the sleet wheat in the frozen biome upstairs, I suddenly notice something: the top of the asteroid is cracked open like a soft-boiled egg and hot CO2 is leaking off into space. Polluted meltwater is dripping down into my garden. So quickly, I a) begin assembling an exo-suit station so someone can go safely explore/seal the gaping hole in the planet, and b) I start looking into meteors a bit more online. What I gather is that the bombardment starts on Cycle 1, and continues forever in 10 on 4 off fort-night cycles. It eventually breaches the upper biomes of your asteroid, and in the long run, the lower ones as well. How any large object in this asteroid belt manages to remain intact is a mystery. The only solution is to shell the planet in bunker tiles, hopefully before anything irreplaceable is destroyed. This solution requires aggressive farming to produce enough eggshells for the lime to make the steel. (And massive scale steel production as well) I don't like meteors chewing apart the planet because I feel like it demands a certain playstyle. If you want to explore mechanics, build the "perfect" base, or just explore, first you need to "win" the race by building a steel umbrella for the whole planet, which is an impressive but kind of ridiculous objective. ONI becomes a zerg-rush of steel production and digging. Based on comments I've seen elsewhere, it looks like meteors were meant to be a challenge and a hurdle thrown up in front of anyone who wants to explore and exploit the riches of space. If that's what they are meant to be, they shouldn't become a problem until you're cracking the surface and looking to the stars. They overshoot the mark, and are instead an existential threat the player must start working to address from Day 1. I would like meteor-proof abyssalite- if not as a default, at least as a toggle when you start a new game. It is the simplest and most obvious solution, and since we can no longer re-build abyssalite tiles, if you remove your protection, it is expensive to replace it. There may be a point when I feel accepting the challenge of defending our doomed home from stony space missiles, but I'm not there yet. I just want to deal with slimelung, heat exchangers, and cool ideas involving pumps and gas stratification for now. The stars can wait. Madbro
I agree that meteor AoE pentrates too much. So I would suggest, Klei must allow bunker tiles resist AoE of meteor impacts. Oozinator
If you ask me, it's not "consistent". Sometimes i have big destruction, seems meteors started early (no sound) and one layer is ripped apart completely and sometimes it's not much stress/small damage, no abbyssalite vein destructed completely. No regolith piles, only small packs and othertimes 30 tiles high. babba
I like penetration ...but I also like destruction. 7 minutes ago, Oozinator said: If you ask me, it's not "consistent". I like to remember Fukushima Tchernobyl or the ten sunken nuclear submarines, but i don't want to derail this fine thread, but it would make no difference, because humans forget to quick and are catched in their own little problems. Rainbowdesign
Not remembering means not even in the mind resisting it to happen again. And for the comets in my games they deposit as much material and dont eat anywhere since they land on that material. Also my bunker doors catch them neatly with no damage i wonder a bit if you play a different game... babba
What about the classic idea to have a menu function to define if, what and how catastrophes will affect the players map. It would also be nice if the player can do these changes in a running game... So one can decide if and when it's too much. Exponential increasing hazard difficulty and types would be great. Well i can add some hazards already namely lava dripping on your dupes heads And should also be able to add sickness. To add more stuff i would however need support from ppl experienced with oni modding. It took me a lot of cycles to get enough steel but you can build a wall to protect it all eventually. In the future I will certainly make it an earlier goal than I did in this play through but just go hard on steel and you should be fine. Also - It doesn't really destroy anything of value, usually just some tiles you can get elsewhere in your map easily. I'm at cycle 600+ and the worst it did was expose a crude oil vent I wasn't ready to contain, a bit of clean up and a quick steal umbrella above it and all good to go. You can also use some of the more disposable walls as temporary defence for anything urgent while you're waiting for the steal production to catch up (which I find the biggest issue is the lack of lime).
