Suggestions on Metal Refinery Cooling

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I need some advice on how to cool this part of the base, right now the temperatures are hovering around 100 F in this area with the Metal Refinery, I thought about using tempshift plates, but need some advice on what material or where to place them for max cooling. Do you think I should use an insulated tile between the two sections (hydrogen generator vs the bottom section.) I haven't explored any other biome yet other than the home one, but am planning on doing it once I get things in line.

Thanks

Alex

I'd probably start by replacing the batteries for smart ones - they emit less heat and in turn waste less energy.

A couple of wheezeworts to the left of the hydrogen gen might not go amiss if you've cracked into an ice biome already.

If you use an electrolyzer setup it will stablize the temperature towards ~72°C, that´s still "cold" enough to keep a metal refinery working if made at least using gold amalgam.

=> Your ~40°C / 100°F are not really a problem if you want to insulate the area.

Or maybe just move the refinery outside that space if you want your dupes to work it without special suits.

(Batteries/Generator will stabilize at a workable temperature)

I suggest finding an ice biome soon, as @Lifegrow said some wheezeworts will help

I usually plant one on each side of my refinery, same for my glass forge

Would Temp Shift Plates be a good idea in this area?

unless you have a good cooling system all temp shift plates will do is even out the heat turning it into an oven

off topic @AviatorAlex but why do you have a Farmers Station with mealwood?

Thought it would help lol

This is not correct.

The products from the electrolyzer would provide barely enough heat capacity to stabilize the Electrolyzer and Hydrogen Generator itself.  It is definitely not enough to counteract the +20 kDTU/s heat from the Metal Refinery.  Plus he needs to keep the room colder unless his dupes work there in Exo suits (which is not the case).

Considering your setup, Wheezeworts planted there would be the best quick solution, so I would prioritize exploring over the Metal Refinery.

I would also suggest you reconsider your Electrolyzer and pump setup as it is far from optimal.  If you are only trying to provide power for the Metal Refinery, you would be better off setting it up with Coal generators for the time being.

Also Smart batteries would help you a lot, use the Rock granulator to get enough refined metals to set yourself up.

Another thing I notice is your power distribution is quite wasteful.  IMO you need to look up transformers and stop using heavy wires so much and you can also save on conductive wires for the time being.

As for your original question, the refinery itself being 100 F is not a problem at all.  The question is what are you doing with the hot coolant that is coming out of it?  That is the heat you need to be worried about getting rid of.  You need to have a toilet loop going sieving polluted water back into clean and getting rid of excessive heat in the process.  Heat that polluted water up first with an aquatuner and use the cold water coming out of the aquatuner to cool other things, like the coolant coming out of the refinery.

Your electrolyzers are producing a good amount of heat and so should be sealed in their own insulated room.  There's also no reason to have an air vent in there.  Oh, and one pump isn't even enough to handle the output of one electrolyzer, let alone two.  Also you have the hydrogen generator inside the room with the electrolyzers, which means it will get hot enough to overheat and take damage unless it's made of gold.

You seem to be using heavy watt wires everywhere, which not only uses a lot of metal, but has a terrible decor value that adds stress to your dupes.

You seem to be pumping both oxygen and co2 into that little room with the carbon skimmer.  There's no reason to send fresh oxygen from the electrolyzers in there, and no reason to waste power pumping up co2 from below up to that room; just put the skimmer down on the ground where the co2 naturally collects.

Finally, you are going to run out of dirt soon growing all of that mealwood.  You need to get onto better food fast.
