dedicated server rant

Recommended Posts

hi,

just a bit of a rant

Klei, please look at terraria, you have great server options, but the way to setup a dedicated server in terraria... you don't even need to do anything. Click the server exe and it guides you through it ! Afterward you can setup configuration files to auto-start it quicker. Also the terraria server just setups himself by either creating a new world or directly poking from the player regular savefiles folder....

edit: it is also completely transparent, regular multiplayer host & dedicated all share the same savefiles, you can switch back & forth at any time. (on terraria that is)

DST dedicated server is 100% more pain to setup. so yeah next game try to make it easier.

Thank you for your attention, have a nice day.

Have you ever tried to do a multi server configuration in Terraria? It's a pain in your frikkin ass that you can't imagine. Setting up a DST Multishard server is a breeze compared to a multi world Terraria Server. Just copy pasting a prepared cluster, editing some port information and stuff, maybe configuring some mods and you are good. Talking about mods, have you ever tried to install mods as easy as on a DST server and keeping them up to date on a Terraria Server? Nope, not happening.

If you wanna have a no maintenance, super ez set up server, just host a client world. That's much easier than setting up a Terraria Server as well.

Thank you for reading, have a nice day as well.

I don't agree because :

  • you don't need multishards servers in terraria for 99,99% of cases. unlike don't starve together where it's required for having 100% of vanilla content to start with
  • the whole setup procedure could be simplified by a lot.
  • and setting up mods on a terraria server is a ******* breeze lol with tmodloader, not sure what you're talking about  ?

I don't think creating a few files is that hard. You can stop people from joining your server with the command

TheNet:SetAllowIncomingConnections( true / false )

there isn't really much of a point in hosting your game from the client if it is already running on the dedicated server instead.. better performance and all.

I probably expressed myself badly, I didn't really mean that it's hard... more like convoluted

lots of unnecessary steps.

why do you have to copy/paste stuff even in configuration files ? why doesn't a first run creates the templates on the fly ? it isn't so hard to achieve in code, I mean even I could do it with a script. (though at this point in the life of the game there's not much point in doing so) heck some of the templates ARE actually created on the fly, but some files are left out of this template creation ....

is this linux vs windows thread?

no, because no idea about linux and furthermore tutorials for dedicated servers are just as long for linux as for windows

apart from the first sentence.... out of topic ? or maybe you need to detail your thoughts ???

never asked for a command to stop people from joining ..

Anyway, I appreciate the attention you all gave this thread, but this was meant for Klei as feedback so that maybe they consider something for their next game, because honestly I don't think DST will get any tweak of this at this point in the life of the game.
