About to hit 300 Cycles w 16 Dupes. Where to from here?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

My base stable and I am chugging along ok. I am at the point where I am looking at downsizing my number of dupes and do slow incremental upgrades of my current infrastructure.

Was wondering where you would suggest I target to gain the best results. Is there anything sticking out as just plain silly that I can work on?

The rationale behind the design is a divergence from my usual. I found I would always try and build the most compact possible base in order to reduce travel time. I have realised that this just isn't working for me. The cooling mechanisms and logic circuits very rarely neatly fit inside the rooms that I build and the bases end up collapsing with the slightest disturbance.image.thumb.png.2375214ddfc4748445aac113edd97acf.png

This design is going quite well, food, water and O2 is stable but I think I have more dupes than I need. Another feature in this base to maximise movement efficiency is that I have built amenaties next to each functional area. Food production has its own barracks, bathroom and mess, as does the generators and the ranchers. My intention is that they get locked in their little boxes and just focus on that task. Automated conveyors or runners would then move supplies between rooms as required. This has been quite effective and I am getting good efficiencies in the base as long as my cooling system stays up.image.thumb.png.be45941bea890aede27fc0bae040bd70.png

The next big project I am working on is a second ranch to try and achieve coal self sufficiency (I have 2 coal generators that act as a backup generator if the natural gas gets overwhelmed). I am also converting my ice biome heat dump into a renewable heat disposal area. I was lucky enough to find a anti entropy thermo nullifier close to my aquatuner so I have started to flood the ice biome with hyrdogen and starting to build wheeze worts.

Would appreciate any feedback or input (have mercy) and am happy to clarify and design choices if you have any questions.

Ok I always like your design and the nice piping you have done ;)

I build similar bases, just i use only one sleeping area (and no dupe restrictions).

Just why do you build your water tanks in the best accessible areas ? (just early nice for managing the heat) My ladders got scultures on mesh tiles to each side for good air flow and nice decor.

(And would suggest some air flow / mesh tiles in the big barrack)

This is embarrassing. Its purely aesthetic. I have gone with a planning guideline of every "module" must have 3 squares around it that are reserved for logic circuits, pipes, gas pipes or wires. Basically all the utilities run around the outside to try and maintain the highest possible decor in the work area.

I wanted them to be nice and square so I could easily visualise the different functions and simplify pipe routing.

The duplicant replicator is a 4x4 square, I couldnt fit a room above it that maintained my 3 square limit either side so I just threw water tanks in. You will notice the same thing for the clean water in the bottom of the base.

Things that come to mind:

* slickster area for oil production, possibly think about how and where to set up molten slicksters

* petroleum/plastic production, comfy beds, ladders

* Cranking up the power IO: more nat gas production (turn all that polluted water into nat gas) and a larger power plant, added benefit of overproducing fertilizer which can be used with sage hatches.

* Upgrade your food production, end goal can be either pepper bread or barbeque or both. Ranching is needed for both to sustain them (pincha pepper) and tons of cold water and polluted water. A good stepping stone is definitely berry sludge.

* (unclear if done) Fully automate and control your water, polluted water IO, so no overflow happens

* and ofc all the ranching, gotta build that zoo

Well eventually you're going to want to scale up your power.  And while hatches certainly do work with this, you're probably going to get fps issues if you solely rely on them and gas geysers.

So your two big options there are steam and oil->natural gas.  My personal recommendation is magma or volcanos of course, but you do need a plan for that.  Petroleum generators are inefficient, require manual labor, and have an absolutely terrible Watt/C02 ratio.  Slicksters on paper sound nice but they don't seem to hoover up as much co2 as they used to and I can't even keep up with my gas generators using just them, which suggests it's better to not use them in the first place. Even if you don't mind the C02, they also have a terrible Watt->Heat ratio.

As for scaling down dupes, well less dupes always makes the game easier, the only reason to have more is for redundancy in case one dies.  So it's just personal preference on whether you want a big base for more fun. If you're building more ranches, you probably don't want to kill anyone yet, though.

here's some of my thoughts:

ladders are slow use tiles instead where you can

blitz style gas storage is also very slow due to its serialized nature try to make a separate pipe for each gas or deal with them in place

make some high quality bedrooms for the dupes

use some slime refinement

delete chlorine with automated doors

centralize your power

change your power source as you progress

(coal -> carbon dioxide -> carbon skimmer -> polluted water -> natural gas)

(slime -> polluted water -> natural gas)

oil -> petroleum -> natural gas or petroleum generator

extra water from all that polluted water/water -> steam turbine

Well, if you're using mushrooms for food instead of ranching, you wanna save that slime for mushrooms.  It will eventually run out.  You also basically need shipping for distillers, and just lock them in a room to never be disturbed.  I've tried it just to try it, and I wouldn't recommend it :(
