Slightly realistic agriculture

Recommended Posts

The thing I think the game could benefit from on the agriculture side is environment management. Currently plants require an atmosphere but do not interact with that atmosphere once its there. (ie IRL plants absorb CO2 and will output O2). Having these sorts of interactions with plants in game would lead to some quite interesting possibilities for atmosphere and gas management. It would also create new challenges as you would need to actively control the atmosphere in farms.

It would also have the side effect of making chlorine a more useful resource.

I kind of hoped you'd come with some real agriculture suggestion and it's just that old "plants should produce oxygen" request.

Well, yeah. It's been suggested plenty of times already. It's certainly not impossible to implement but on the other hand - the current agriculture system in the game feels reasonably stable and balanced and oxygen generation from plants isn't really needed. It would just break the current balance and require establishing a new one. It would help the game feel more realistic but I'm not quite sure it would actually improve the game.

Also, in real world, plants usually require sunlight to split CO2 and produce oxygen. It's a very energy demanding process and lot of sunlight or other source of energy is required. People who grow plants in artificial light often pay rather large amounts of money for electricity and it only pays off because their product is also rather expensive.

I wouldn't mind the plants absorbing the energy from lamps a long with the heat. Spreading the heat among the plants.
I personally still would like to see realistic water consumption for plants.
Lastly, I would like to see more upkeep for crops than just the water/atmo/temp.
Such as bugs (needing to craft bug repellent produced by the farm station) or critters eating crops.
Things to make farming a bit more difficult while pairing that with a decrease it water consumption would be cool imo.
I think a more balanced agriculture would be similar to starvation, you have x cycles to give the water/pw. However, the plant continues to grow.

I wouldn't be so sure about that.  The water levels aren't outrageous considering the short lifecycles of the plants.  It takes 20*6 kg water to grow a bristle berry, which feeds 2 when cooked.  That's 60 kg water per meal, or 16 gallons, which is extremely cheap.  Real world foods are far more expensive.

If I was the only one to complain about them, I wouldn't say anything. But I am not. With the new geysers. Water can be quite a challenge especially for newer players. And from what I noticed, dupes over eat. So just because 1 plant can feed 2 dupes doesn't mean it does feed 2 dupes.

The water consumption decrease I suggested would be something changed if they added other things to watch out for. Rats, bugs, etc.

If the dupes overeat one cycle, they undereat in a later cycle.  It always averages to 1000 kcal per cycle because that is the rate at which they burn calories.  Unless they have bottomless stomach.

I have seen quite a bit of situations where they didn't under eat and have had happen to me. Where my dupes kept eating 2k-3k daily.

Are you watching a single dupe?  Does a dupe that eats 3k in one day eat the next day?  Were they starving when they started?  Because I can pretty precisely tell how many farms it takes to feed my dupes using the 1 kcal/cycle measure.

No, yes, no. There were a few other people who posted about this too. Maybe it's just a bug. Idk
