Idea - Water Springs

Recommended Posts

Upon booting up the game and playing for an hour and a half, my colony ran out of easily accessible water, and that made me wonder about sustainability. I know in this game, all water could be considered a spring, but I was pondering the idea of much rarer pockets of water that if given time will begin to refill. Obviously this would need to be pretty slow and very rare so you couldn't abuse the system, but a particular natural spawned block that will slowly fill the space around it with water could be something worth considering.

the problem with running out of water only happens to players who are fresh to the game. Your water source if around 200kg should last with ease for more than 60 cyles. we also have a mass loss right now in the pipes wich is going to be fixed. and we are getting a steam geyser that is going to produce steam which will turn to water when cooled off.

Hmmm, you don't need water to make food you know ;)

regardless of that, real world has them too and i think it would add a more authentic look to the game. I imagine a long water stream vane in 1x1 blocks going up to the surface (beyond the unmineable blocks) but you cant actually see where it comes from cause you cant dig up and the vane is only 1x1.

edit : but i dont know how it would work taking in consideration current water mechanics.

So in conclusion. No, it's a bad idea. The only reason you would need this is because you have not played it enough to realize that you don't need water for anything at all. Nothing that your dupes actually needs to survive requires the use of water.

I have a base currently at 1001 cycles (and it could go on forever but where's the point in that), and I haven't used a single drop of water except for what is used for researching in the beginning.

What I wanna know is why we can't have weather effects. Water that has been vaprized becomes rain. We should be able to heat up water to create our localized rains. Also, through electrolysis you can seperate oxygen and hydrogen. That mechanic would allow for another source of oxygen but only assuming you can hande the hydrogen. You could make both a source of oxygen and power with water. Since rain returns water and oxygen extraction doesn't, you wouldn't have an infinite source - just more sources that makes technological sense and requires proper management.

Wait. Sorry for asking this but have you played the game at all?

There is a building called an Electrolyzer that makes O2 (and hydrogen) from water already.
You can make steam and condense it in the game already.

Yeah I've played it a whole ******* lot... I didn't sleep tonight and am tired, that's my excuse... Speaking of, you can make actual steam? Does it become water? How do?

There is such a thing in the game already tho?

No. And that is exactly the point. If there was you would not be forced to actually explore the possibilities the game already provides. It would just be another super easy base sim game where you didn't have to come up with inventive ways to make what you need from the limited resources available.

Search the ONI General Discussion forum for the keyword "steam", and you'll find many different ways to achieve it.
