Wusscake
I decided to make a tutorial video for DST for optimal surviving, up until winter, feel free to ask or input advice:
Kittydub
I only watched for a few minutes, what really stands out for me up to this point is how loud your keyboard actually is :/ It's a bit long as well, maybe split it up a bit?
Sicko Hog
The keyboard IS really loud. But you called people out for relying on beefalo and farms, and crafted a torch to explore at night instead of making a campfire, so it seems like a solid tutorial. Wusscake
Yea, I use a mechanical keyboard and my mic is a yeti, so it's pretty sensitive. Not much I can do about that, sadly.

Just the other day I was on a new map and almost decided to explore the map edges with a torch instead of making a camp fire and waiting for day, but then I told myself, "nah, you know better than that." Sure enough, when I started exploring again the next morning, I spotted a walking cane boon that was well out of torch range. I would have missed it'd I were doing that torch strat. That strat is so overrated. You have to stop walking to chop wood, or mine rocks or study the map or cook food anyway, so just do that stuff at night. There really isn't that much of an advantage to be gained from having the full map outline a day or two earlier. I've been on one map over 300 days and still haven't bothered to explore the full outline of the map.
Wusscake
I somewhat disagree. While you will likely miss things roaming at night, the purpose isn't to explore at night early on, it's to continue gathering and be productive. You can build a campfire if you wish next to some trees and chop them down or next to rocks to break those down, that is also fine. The point is to make sure you stay productive in your gathering. Rellimarual
I think we actually agree. Regardless of when in the game you explore, I simply would recommend that it's best to do it with full visibility if you want to avoid missing some of the goodies and/or information you won't find on the revealed map. There are tons of productive things to do at night -- one of my favorites is killing koalaphants, since it's much easier to hit it after it falls asleep than to chase it to a corner trying to get it to aggro on you. But that might be too advanced for this video. If you're just gathering stuff, as you are in this video, then a torch is fine, especially if you've already mapped the area. What I'm arguing against is the idea that it's so important to explore/reveal the whole map in the first few days that you should craft a torch to run around the edges of it. I have actually camped a screen or two away from beefalo in my time, and not regretted it. The poop is a great free alternative to burning the logs that you need so many of when you're building your base. But farms are definitely not worth investing a ton of time in that first autumn. Wusscake
Right. I actually do a ton of stuff in this video, and some strats are somewhat advanced. I tell people that I cannot stress enough how important fighting is in this game. You have to be good at fighting if you want to gather food effeciently. I played the entire autumn setting up a cozy base next to pig king and had a massive amount of food in the fridge by the first day of winter, including 20 large meat. The thing about this game is it has so much content and variety in how you can do things, no short tutorial can remotely capture even 1/5 of what this game tosses at you.
