Warplord
I was wondering how exactly does the sarting portal resource renewal work? Grass tuft/sapplings/berries and flint should spawn around it if none are present but on what principle and how large of a radius does that cover? And is it actually true? Has someone seen new things pop up ? (because with the disease mechanic there is a real chance to run out of grass/sapplings/bushes one day...) ClumsyPenny
I play this game a lot and I've never seen the florid postern do that. It might have been a feature some time ago but I'm pretty sure it's not a thing right now. About grass tufts, saplings and bushes, those respawn around the world if you're playing wilderness or endless. GentlemanFridge
Don't forget the birds that sometimes, instead of seeds, poop out flint. Or whole grass tufts... To answer your question, I think things regenerate off-screen. I've definetly noticed regrowth around the portal, but never when I was there. Electroely
I think it isn't the portal that respawns tufts, saplings and berry bushes. It's birds. IT'S ALWAYS BIRDS. CaptainChaotica
And they're watching you. Always. (Okay, now somebody needs to do a video where Wickerbottom casts the bird spell and we intercut shots of the tons of birds all over the ground in Don't Starve with shots from Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds". Heh.) ...Notorious Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/75136-a-question-about-the-starting-portal/#findComment-875541 Share on other sites
Arlesienne
You're actually both more or less correct. The algorithm aims at spawning renewable resources like trees if a periodic scan of an area proves there are none. Flint and - if I'm fully right - twigs and grass are dropped by birds if there are none around and a new player shows up in the area. I think saplings and grass tufts still fall under the power of the algorithm. Not certain about berrybushes. O.o Seriously ? Birds were introduced early on in ANR. They don't drop grass tufts or saplings. Flint for sure, then 90% certain cut grass and twigs. Like they were going to build a nest and suddenly changed their plans. hkhm
so i have been testing the portal resource renewal and yes, it does seem to work. but you need to make certain no one is near the portal for it to work. i dug up every sapling, bush and tuft then would come back every few days to find more. i was mostly interested in the bushes and i did get both regular and juicy berry bushes. then i tested it in wilderness mode. it also works around the area where you spawn. i spawned right at the edge of a killer bee area, good times dodging bees and digging up resources. interestingly enough, i got a much faster renewal rate in wilderness than in survival. i have so many berry bushes i don't know what to do with them now. It wasn't close to the portal though, now that I think about it.
