Reccomend me some Servers

Recommended Posts

I'm tired of playing on public servers. Just had a day 18 server roll back because "chester died". What are some US east coast servers that are moderately populated and with good admins? I wouldn't mind hosting my own servers but I'd rather play on a server that already has a playerbase with it, preferably experienced players.

It is a public one, but I'm a big fan of How To Survive. Granted, it's huge, so not perfectly secure, but its usually got its regulars on it, or an admin. The description makes it clear that it's not for newbies, and if they spawn in anyway they usually see all the walrus camps and nope on outta there, or just get weeded out in time.

Anyway, I'll be watching this thread, because I need new servers too! Can't bum around The Rabbit Trap forever.

EDIT: Did not see "East Coast." My apologies, HTS is based in the San Francisco area.

It's not up all the time, but anyone would be welcome on our server. When it is up, the server is open to the public however there's always an admin on so anyone attempting to grief or abuse the voting system isn't gonna accomplish anything (It's actually kinda funny when someone tries this multiple times only for me to immediately use /stopvote on each attempt). I forget exactly where our host lives, but they are in the US so hopefully latency shouldn't be too bad.

I'd also like to apologize for our group name. Nobody could really think of anything and this is what we ended up with.

Oh, god, How to Survive.  _I_ remember that one!  Walrus camps _all over the goddess damned place_ and when winter hit...chaos!  Our base was built way the heck away from the portal, with multiple wormholes and signs needed to get there, and we _still_ had a couple walrus camps nearby.

Nice big fancy base...lots of tam-o-shanters...people dying EVERY FEW SECONDS...I died at least three times...this was the playthrough where I was a ghost and saw my shadow-creature wake up spiders by walking over their web...and last but not least, somebody accidentally haunted one of MacTusk's ice-hounds into a fire one while trying to chase it away and EVERYTHING BURNED DOWN GLORIOUSLY.  As I recall, we made it to spring just out of _dumb stubbornness_ to not make it through MOST of that hell-winter and not finish it, then everybody was kinda tired and left.

Memorable experience.  Not one I'm eager to repeat, but memorable.  : P

But, it _was_ well-run. It did have the feeling of somebody being there who was in charge and knew what they were doing.  I can vouch that much.  Nobody got vote-kicked just for the funsies or anything.

I'd use this opportunity to spam my own server ("Zelynda's Funtime Wilderness Extravaganza!") as even though it's not up all the time, I run a tight ship when it comes to trolls/general jerkiness...BUT..it's not east-coast.  It's in the Mountain time zone.  So, yeah.

By the way--dumb side-question:  How do you see where a server is physically located? I'm always curious but don't know how to look it up.

Ah.  I don't know who Jacklul is or how to get into/use his (?) browser, so I was a bit confused.  I do vaguely remember seeing the locations of servers _once_, but couldn't remember where, when, or how to get back to that.  It's one of those kinda frustrating things where you stumble into something useful/interesting/cool ONCE, then can't figure out what steps you need to retrace to repeat it later.  Heh.

ANYway.  Shutting up now...

If you're looking for some good servers, well, your best bet would be making your own.

I dunno about the main branch (haven't switched to it in over 2 months now), but the beta branch has literally 0 good servers. Admins are always rude to players and such.

How to survive is a good server I suppose, but the abundance of walruses makes it impossible to base in surface.

IMPOSSIBLE. pls help who's stupid idea was this walruses are meant to be rare wilson_cry

So yea, your best bet would be making your own. You'd normally have no lag, only 6 player slots (there's a mod that helps you add more slots) and you rule the world!

totally agree with the walrus camp part

I'M on the Beta branch and I'm not rude...!  The main problem with my server is that it's only up when I happen to feel like playing a nice long Don't Starve session, and that's..sporadic.  (Well, that and the location.  Due to my weird hours I often get people from way across the world playing, who then have awful lag.)  But when my server IS up and running, I'm very helpful and keep a tight leash on rudeness and griefers.

That SAID, it's true--the best way to get a world set up to your own personal preferences is to make your own. That's why I made mine!  I know exactly what mods are on there and how they work, and that the world settings are they way I like them.

Awww... So I'm rude to the people who play on our server? I thought things were going pretty well. Drama between players is quite rare and I've never kicked/banned anyone due to personal reasons, nor have I seen any of the other admins do that. Heck, it's pretty uncommon for us to actually need to use our admin abilities. I haven't seen anyone get kicked or banned in quite a while actually. That's kinda surprising considering that we're open to the public when the server is up.

Hint: Try looking at Strictly Unprofessional.

I also meant to say MOST. MOST admins are rude.

Yeah, it's quite unfortunate how abusive admins are rampant in games like DST where players run their own servers and such. I know I've run across my fair share of them. I'll admit that there's a couple people on our server that I don't like too much, but I'm not gonna just ban them due to a petty reason like that. The ban hammer is reserved for griefers and just generally toxic individuals. It's too bad most other people don't feel this way and would ban you without question just because you have an opinion they don't like.

Agreed to the best bet being a personal server (distinguish between private AKA with a password and personal, that is not official). I vehemently disagree with the other parts:

1) setting the MacTusks to more can be a good challenge; I have a server with such a setting (giants and Krampus to lots too) and it's perfectly doable to base on the surface, more than that, it's FUN :D

2) saying the beta has "literally 0 good servers" and that admins are "always rude" - no, way too strong; in a PM, I'd be interesting in getting the names and preferably IPs of worlds which you think classify as such: I want to compare them to the list of the ones up during my playtimes.

That's because griefers now flock to dedicated servers since they are meant to run 24/7 or so, and thus are unmanned. An ideal playground to grief.

MOST. MOST ADMINS. NOT ALL. MOST.

Pardon, but do remember you specifically said:

So yeah, it's worth clarifying, an edit of the post marking what part you added could be handy :).

Thanks for all the replies. I think I will go ahead and make my own sever in this case. What are some helpful console commands that I should memorize if I'm going to be monitoring my own server?

I advise this gem.

Additionally, you may either try out mods which expand player slots (they never worked for me though, still worth a try) or edit the LUA yourself (though this will become a regular feature as every big update rolled out will require another edit).
