Better AI for Maxwell shadow puppets

Recommended Posts

I find that the AI for the shadow puppets, coupled with their low health of 75 and damage of 40 leads to a relatively bad item. On top of these issues the cost of 2 nightmare fuel to spawn them would make them more valuable. If their AI was just improved to make them smarter fighters (such as making them kite enemies like pigs) i would find that that they would be a valuable attribute to an already weak character.

Since shadow puppets basically cost no resources once you use the many ways to farm nightmare fuel, they'd be pretty OP if they could fight like pigs.

Maxwell is a strong character otherwise anyway even if you don't utilize the shadows.

Opposite for me, I usually don't die when I play Maxwell as opposed to other character. Usually I end up getting burned out on a day 500 world and end up killing him off on purpose.

He's great in Shipwrecked too.

Probably cause you play safer and say no to having more storeage in the beginning. xD

I always use backpacks though. I just always have a football helm or crown on, then switch to night armor during fights. Also make life giving amulets as soon as I get red gems.

Its mainly because(I think at least) you have to be smarter when you fight as Maxwell. Its not a "come over here so i can kill you" like it is with all the characters. Its a "come here so I can indirectly kill you" or stuff like gunpoweder-ing Dragonfly.

You use amulets? Didn't you said once that you use Effigies instead? Even as Maxwell.

I use them sometimes, but if I notice I've gone 50 days without dying or using it, I'll break it down since there's no point in reducing max health if I'm not even using it.

The cases wear I commonly use them I'll pre-build them so they're not eating my health.

Why, I was gonna say "Do not question a pro!". ;-;

Edit:But your answer is more informational

Im stressed out from spelunking as Maxwell(Krampus Sack to truly raid the ruins, but I also need armor). If you place an effigy underground and then revive, what happens? Do you just respawn right in front of what killed you?

Yeah, you'd respawn in front of it. Kinda like an amulet.

I use them as a last resort unless I feel like being the 45 hp magician.

Any tips for Maxwell in the ruins? I mean, I want to bring my Krampus Sack to get all the stuff, but I'm also maxwell, so ruins are a pain(aren't they?).

Yeah they're a pain. I personally don't linger down there unless I'm farming nightmare fuel. If you really need the backpack though and get into fights, I suggest using a lantern so you have a light source can wear a football helmet or crown. If you get into a fight you can drop the lantern and it'll stay on. Magiluminescence works good too but that takes up the chest slot of course. Otherwise, just keep armor in your inventory and switch to it when you get into fights, like depth works.

You can also have the shadow puppets fight for you. Ruins are really easy way to gets stacks of nightmare fuel (since all the shadow creatures die at once when the cycle ends and drop their fuel), so they can be relied on.

Depth worms are annoying, so I usually bring some rock lobsters when they become an issue.

Do glow berries work? Occupy no slots, pulsate light.

Ruins are quite easy as Maxwell if you know what you're doing, you won't even need any follower (Codex Umbra/Bunnies/Rock Lobsters). One of the main problem of raiding ruins is sanity and Maxwell completely counters that. Yes, he has low hp, but if you have the right equipment you won't have any issue. Here's what I bring:

Main inventory:

Walking Cane, Dark Sword, Night Armor, Lantern, Moggles, Footbal Helmet/Thulecite Crown, Logs, Gold, Grass, Twigs.

Krampus Sack:

Food (Bacon & Eggs usually, because it lasts for a long time), Moggles (one more in case I break the first one), Living Logs, Nightmare Fuel, Papyrus.

When clearing biomes, tank Rooks and Bishops by equipping Night Armor and try to ignore Knights, unless they're too close to a statue you want to mine. Wear Moggles all the time unless you need to check the color of a gem or during an earthquake. During an earthquake wear your Helmet/Crown and hold a lantern, so you can see the falling rocks better. If your sword/armor is low % (under 10% for sword, under 20-25 for armor), you can just make another with the living logs/nightmare fuel/papyrus you are carrying. During the nightmare cycle you have 3 options: stand still in a safe spot using a lantern and crown/helmet until the cycle is over, go to the starting area and kill depths worms (fuel for moggles) or equip your night armor and explore. The third option is safer if you have coffee. For the ancient guardian, just use the campfire strategy.

It's possible to clear the ruins (mining all the statues, killing the guardian) in just 5-6 days with coffee without ever needing to go back to the surface for supplies/making a base in the ruins.

This should be everything, if you have more questions feel free to ask.

I'll try this actually.

Guess that when I'm done base building and further spelunking I'll go to SW to get a thulecite set from Quacken(thought of that already), Coffee, and then go to the ruins.

Thanks.

Should I bring Chester, and should I carry Healing Salves?

I personally don't like Chester at all, he's slow and gets killed by depth worms or steps on spider webs constantly. For health there's plenty of blue mushrooms in the ruins and you can always pick them since it's permanently night. Since you're Maxwell you don't even have to worry about the sanity loss.

So no salves?

Because personally I trust em a lot more than mushrooms. I mainly just use Chester to bring the bacon and eggs without aggroing any bunnyman/drop off things.

This thread is all about Maxwell in the ruins, but how is he in shipwrecked? My biggest issue with SW is that I get posioned without a cure and lose lots of health making one. How do you deal with that as Maxwell?

Maxwell is actually great in Shipwrecked. His shadows summon their own shadow row boats and will follow you across the ocean, still fighting and working with you. His sanity is great for shrugging off wetness in monsoon and hurricane as well. Since a lot of the hard fighting is done at sea, Maxwell's low health isn't a huge problem since the boat takes damage rather than your character.

As for poison, the trick is to not get poisoned at all really. It was greatly nerfed however, so if you do it's a bit easier to do with. For example, you only need a venom gland to cure yourself, but it takes 80 hp away (leaves you at 5 health if you have less than 80 health) while anti venom takes no health.

My idea of survival is not losing 80/85 of my health to cure poison, but I;ll give it a shot.

Better to cure the poison and have 5 health than die and lose your world because you didn't cure yourself.

Maxwell is easy to heal anyway. Blue mushrooms are great, 20 health and he just regens the lost sanity.

Great is probably an understatement. Sanity regeneration makes almost every new setback in Shipwrecked meaningless, from wetness to raw seaweed/limpets.

Thanks to your tips I just fully raided a ruin in around 5 days.
