Hello Don't Starve Community! I was just playing Don't Starve and was about to go into winter for the first time (I'm a noob don't judge) and I was lacking one important winter survival need, the icebox (or fridge or whatever). So I studied it and found a way to survival by hunting rabbits and stuff but I was thinking other people may need small hints like this too so I decided to make this thread to ask and answer questions and also give tips and tricks to surviving and thriving. So feel free to ask, answer, and just have a friendly conversation. If you find some cool thing or new strategy or a way to get out of some sticky situation then just post it, you never now who it may help! Thanks and be nice! :)

I have a method for surviving overheating Summer (in RoG ofcoarse) however I wasn't lucky enough to test it out and was killed in the Spring.

What you do is get an Ice Chester (if you can find an eyebone and nine blue gems), make two thermal stones and swap them when one gets too hot. You'll need to take Chester with you.

Also, near the end of Winter, you can just collect heaps of ice and make a few Ice Blocks. I think a melon can be used too but I don't know that much about DS myself.

To respond the poll: I like anything that has the name "Don't Starve" on it.

And for the tips and tricks: A bird cage is your best resource for survival. I makes yo able to multiply any crop, it lets you convert cooked monster meat into eggs. For the crock pot i always make Bacon and eggs with 2 eggs, one monster meat, and one small meat(morsel, frog legs...) they rot at the same rate as jerky (20 days, about 40 in a fridge).

For summer, usually stay away from my base because of the smoldering things.

Hello Everyone! I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas of fun things to do in winter? Thanks! :)

You should try hunting pengulls and mining their icebergs.

If you really want to have FUN try using endortemic fires and the ice cube!

Thanks! I will try it out, if I live to then. I was just playing and my character said "that sounds BIG" so I looked it up and I looked it up and found out that deerclops is spawning!!! So I'm terrified (cause I'm a nooooob) and I was wondering if you or anyone has a good stratigy to killing him (him, her, it?!?!). So ya all I have is a log suit and a spear. Also I might consider using a command to despawn him just for now atleast (I now it cheating!) so if you know a command to despawn him that would be nice to know, I may not use it.

Run away from your base, the deerclops is going to destroy every structure. If you get to kill it, it is going to be very usefull for spring and summer because he drops his eyeball and with it you can make the eyebrella wich stops the wetness from the rain and slows down the overheating rate.

Winter isn't really hard if you got the following 4 things.

1: A Spidernest pretty close to your base

2: A Bunch of traps sorrounding said nest

3: A Birdcage with a Bird inside (should be easy to make with all the Silk from the Spiders)

4: A Crockpot

All you do is cook the Monstermeat (over a fire mind you) and give 3 of them to the Birdcage (needs an actual Bird inside beforehand to work) and then cook 1 Monstermeat and 3 Eggs to make Meatballs what basicly feeds you for an entire day as long as your name isn't Wolfgang, Warly or Wes.

For staying warm well all you really need is a Razor and the previously mentioned Spidernest. Just whack a couple of Spiders for their Silk and during the Night you shave some Sleeping Beefalos to make a Winterhat. That with a Thermal Stone should easily help you get through Winter without freezing to death. Although a Breezy/Puffy Vest is a nice investment if you have the Materials but not nessesary.

Basicly it all boils down to Spiders really. They look scarry at first but once you get a bit competent at the game they will be your best buds because of all the Ressources they provide and all the usefull Items you can get from them and their Silk. It get's stupidly silly when you start playing Wigfrid where you can easily fill chests with Silk and Spiderglands that you never going to use (an actual problem i have).

Wow!!! Thanks that's a great tip!!! It will help me a lot!!! Also if you or anyone has some tips to restore sanity later game (After first winter). I actually am lacking silk cause I killed the nearby spider nests instead of waiting for tier 3 then relocating. I can go out of my way to find one but that was my mistake. Also to anyone who was wondering surviving through winter is easy without a fridge if you have a pattern down (this has to due with my on going noob series  So yes, I have survived my first winter!

Sleeprolls/Tents, Cooked Green Mushrooms and Jerky is what i use to restore sanity maybe Taffy if i have the honey for it but Green Shrooms are just as good.

Yeah I found cooked greencaps help a lot, especially in Adventure Mode when flowers are rarely present :/ Sleeping helps a bunch too if you have a good amount of food.

Okay i give it that this is Hilarious.

However why would i ever need a Sanity restoring Item as Wigfrid? Cause i NEVER have Sanity problems because she easily restores more Sanity when killing stuff like Spiders or Hounds then those drain so you always gain more sanity when you just fight of houndwaves or hunt Spiders for meat.

Ok I will try to summarize the best & easier tips I have :

Hunger :

The easiest source of food (i.e. with minimal preparation) are Meatballs and Bacon and Eggs. For Meatballs you can use Monster Meat which is found in abundance at all seasons with Spider Nest and add 3 mushroom, berries, Ice or Seaweed (SW). Bacon and Eggs require a Birdcage, use some Silk for a Bird Trap and put the Bird in the Birdcage. Now you need to gather 3 Monter Meat, Cook two on a fire and give them to the bird for Eggs then put 2 Eggs, 1 Monster Meat and one Morsel or Meat for Bacon and Eggs.

Fun tip : you can put anything in a bird trap, like Flint or Rot, and the bird will still land on it.

Sanity :

Cooked Green Cap and Cooked Cactus Flesh are the earliest source of Sanity you can find. Cactuses are particularly great as they grow back in all seasons. Later you can use Drying Rack for Jerky and Small Jerky to restore some Sanity. If you put some Bee Box, Taffy is awesome for Sanity management. In Shipwrecked Bananapop is the go-to recipe for Sanity restoration, Banana are easy to get by starting monkey war (give a Prime Ape a Banana and order it to attack an other one) and Ice can be produced with the Ice Machine. California Roll are also easy to make (2 Limpets + 2 Seaweeds) and restore 10 Sanity.

Of course let's not forget Dapper clothes. Tam o' Shanter is the best and will completely solve Sanity problems, Mac Tusk drop it. Top Hat should not be too hard to craft with all the spiders you should kill for Monster Meat. There is also some really interesting Chest Slot clothes for Sanity that are often forgotten. Floral Shirt is extremely great for Summer, Life Giving Amulet act as an infinite source of Sanity (as long as you do not take damage), similar to Scalemail or Thulecite Suit. Of course there is also the Belt of Hunger which help with both Sanity and Hunger.

Fun tip : Willow ability to restore Sanity with Fire is not limited to one fire at a time. Drop one by one multiple Twigs on the ground and light them to be back at full sanity in a seconds.

Health :

Well the best way to manage Health is to not lose it in the first place, learn to kite mobs and wear a Log Suit when you are fighting. Blue Cap and Butterfly Wings are good ways to restore Health at the beginning. Keep your Spider Glands for boss fight or Caves exploration (turn them into Healing Salves if possible). Later on Pierogi, made similarly to Bacon and Eggs but with a Veggetables such as Mushroom instead of Meat/Morsel, is awesome for health restoration. Fishsticks and Froggle Bunwhich are also good. If you have farms a lot of Fruits and Vegetables will restore Health even if eaten cooked on a fire. Two other good recipes to keep in mind that can be made with minimal ingredients are Butter Muffin (1 Butterfly Wings + 1 Mushroom + 2 Twigs) and Trail Mix (1 Roasted Birchnut + 3 Berries). SW contains so much health recipes that it should never be a concern.

Winter :

Winter is easier than it seems. While most plants are not available you can still rely on Meat to survive, just convert Monster Meat into Eggs and you have easy food or make Meatballs with Ice or Bacon and Eggs with Morsel/Meat.

Against Freezing only use Thermal Stone if you have nothing else. Winter Hat work better and is easy to make. Beefalo Hat is even better but require to kill some beef. Once Winter have started do not hesitate to follow Suspicious Dirt Pile to get the powerful Puffy Vest. Tam o' Shanter and Hibearnation Vest are top tiers but harder to get.

To warm up instead of walking around with a stack of wood use Pinecone. Plant one and burn it with a Torch, it will last much longer than burning twigs on the ground, long enough to warm you back to full. Since you can carry Pinecone by 40 it is much more space efficient than making Campfire.

Fun tip : wearing a Fashion Melon will completely stop Freezing. At the cost of Sanity of course.

Spring :

Spring is not really hard, an Umbrella + Football Helmet will completely stop the rain. If possible upgrade to Rain Coat or Eyebrella to save inventory space.

Try to use Frogs Rain at your advantage, go into area with other monsters such as Hound's Mound or Spider Nest and use the Frogs to clean them. You can also use Traps to help you clean a Frog Rain.

Make a Lightning Rod in all sensible area! (base, Twigs/Grass farms)

Summer :

Umbrella is a good starter item if you need to counter overheating, Straw Hat will also help a bit. Try to get a Floral Shirt asap, it will make Summer much easier. Eyebrella is strong (do not forget to use the Sewing Kit).

To cool down you can use Ice Chester + 2 Thermal Stone or try to make an Chilled Amulet and switch it when it starts getting hot. Endothermic Campfire are too costly to be used reliably. Make an Endothermic Fire Pit in your base and always keep some Thermal Stone in your Icebox to cool down at home.

To counter Smoldering Ice Flingomatic is often the default choice. Do not forget that you can also stop them with Fertilizer (such as Rot) or bare handed at the cost of Health (not for Willow). Lureplant are also nice because they attract Smoldering, like how Lightning Rod attract Lightning if there is a Lureplant around it will always Smolder before anything else.

Hurricane :

In Shipwrecked you should just skip Firepit and make a Chiminea instead as it is protected against Wind. Make sure to store all your belongings into Chest so they are not blown away by Wings (nor stolen by monkeys). Build a Lightning Rod! Make sure your base is not close to the shore as the tide can go quite high and flood your structures.

For the rain a classic Umbrella + Football Helmet still work. The Horned Helmet is also amazing as it gives more rain protection (enough to make you Waterproof with Snakeskin Jacket) and immunity to poison. Dumbrella and Blubber Suit will gives you waterproofing for only one slot. Palm Leaf Hut is easy to make and placing one next to a fire is a good way to quickly dry as it gives complete immunity to rain.

If you wish to sail during Hurricane seasons prefer a Armored Boat or Row Boat as they are faster than Cargo Boat and so it is easier to dodge huge wave.

Green :

Tips against Rain and Lightning still apply there.

If you have not made one yet, craft a Horned Helmet or a Seashell Suit to avoid poison from Mosquitoes. Having some Anti Venom ready is a good idea too.

By the time you get to this season make sure that all your important structures are on player-made turfs (Wooden Flooring or Snakeskin Rug) and are surrounded by Sandbags. Stop puddle next to your base with more sandbags if needed.

Dry :

Thankfully Overheating is not as bad during this season as it is during RoG Summer. Also Floral Shirt is much easier to craft so making one should solve any overheating problem. The Chilled Amulet is probably the best way to cool down but standing under a tree should work too.

Make sure you are out of your base when an eruption is starting. You can stop them with sacrifice at the Volcano but they are generally easy enough to avoid by sailing. I recommend sailing close to an island with few things to burn so some of the Dragoon Eggs will fall on land and produce valuable Rocks and Flint.

OMG The top hate thing is so funny!

I have a question, what are those weird eye things? one popped up near my base, what should I do?

Never mind, I took care of it.

I still say it that's a Lureplant basicly you got the Bulb and the Eyeplants. The Eyeplants will eat anything and i mean anything that comes close to them no matter if it's a bird, sticks or crops from farms. To get rid of them you gotta destroy the Bulb what isn't hard mind you cause the Eyeplants don't take a lot of punishment and die after 1 or 2 spearswipes (depending on Characterchoice).

However there are a lot of practical uses for the Plants for one if you put the bulb down remove the turf below and near it and replace it with Rock Turf or Woodenflooring the Bulb can't spawn new Eyeplants and you can go to it every other day and harvest the Leafy Meat. Another use i heard of is putting them on a bit of Rocky turf just so you create a corridor and leave enought space left and right for the Eyeplants to spawn and then you put a bunch of Saplings and Grasstufts near them and let the Eyeplants harvest them for you and whack the Bulb every now and then to get the ressources but i never used them for that so i can't say how effective this is.

Thanks, didn't know you could do that stuff with them. That will come in lots of handy. :)
