I remember seeing several threads about Walani and how her perks seem kinda bland and don't do that much in SW, let alone RoG. Current Walani stats (from the wiki, feel free to correct any errors) 120 Health 200 Hunger 200 Sanity Perk item: craftable surfboard, 75 durability, can be stored in inventory, 6.5 sailing speed, handsfree -1.1x hunger modifier -0.9x and 0.9x sanity modifier -1.1x wetness modifier I compiled some ways that Walani could be modified to be a little more distinctive as a character in both SW and RoG worlds. I acknowledge that some of these might be imbalanced, I dunno I'm just spitballing lol If you see any of your ideas here, feel free to tell me so I can credit you! Immunity to sanity penalties from Wetness A wetness modifier seems strange... Is she coated in water resistant stuff so that water rolls off? Anyway, +-10% isn't exactly very noticeable. I think it would make more sense if she has no sanity penalties from wetness rather than "resistance" to wetness itself. Could come in handy come RoG Spring too. She should still experience all other effects like wet inventory, lower perceived temperature etc 'cuz Walani not caring about wetness doesn't mean her stuff stops getting wet. Then again, characters can step in puddles and stay completely dry with an umbrella and a hat... so yeah. Changing the multipliers As said earlier, +- 10% isn't much. I played her and frankly, I didn't notice any difference. Maybe +-25%? Combined with no sanity penalties from wetness, Walani would have the potential to stay sane/relaxed longer, sortamaybe fitting her description. Ability to surf big waves (maybe on the surfboard only) + surfboard buffs in general Seems like a reasonable buff to the surfboard. Fits nicely with the fact that she's a surfer and could possibly encourage more ocean exploration. In general, the surfboard itself seems a little lackluster, especially the durability. Not drowning when boat durability reaches 0 without having to use a life jacket. A surfer that can't swim at all..? I'm not too sure how this suggestion could be implemented without being imbalanced though. Possible ways to implement + concerns: - Upon boat breaking within a certain distance from shore, spawn on the nearest land source. Beyond this distance, drown as per normal. - Spawning on the nearest land source could be similar to resurrection via touchstone/effigy, spawn with a fixed health/hunger/sanity plus maximum wetness. - Alternatively, falling into the water subtracts an amount of health/hunger/sanity. Drown if the boat breaks and she has "insufficient" health. - Not very sure what happens to her inventory. Being stranded on land with 0 resources isn't fun, but spawning on an island with everything intact feels like it's a bit much. Or just use the same mechanics as the life jacket, free log raft! I think her health/hunger/sanity are fine as they are, but they could be changed for balance reasons I guess. SapphireBullets Posted February 2, 2016 Share Posted February 2, 2016 One could see the wetness reduction as either her knowing how to dry off more effectively (having developed habits as a surfer and sailor) or simply not caring as much. I'm a bit more curious about how her mechanics are going to transfer over to Reign of Giants since there's not as much wetness and no sailing opportunities. Misaki Posted February 2, 2016 Share Posted February 2, 2016 Maybe she gets a passive Life Jacket because she knows how to swim, but when she wakes up after boat is destroyed she's starving (swimming all the way there took a lot of energy), with less sanity (she almost died) and completely wet (obviously), health unchanged. Also her perk should be renamed to "comfortable with wetness" and instead of drying quicker she loses no sanity on lower levels of wetness and 50% less on max and from wet clothes. "Is pretty chill gal" should mean that she has Wendy's sanity bonus but Warly's hunger penalty to balance it. Using "10%" of X as a character perk is an abomination. Hezel Posted February 2, 2016 Share Posted February 2, 2016 A character with a partial or absolute immunity to a mechanic doesn't cut it for me unless there is a benefit to be had from the immunity. Willow is a great example of this in singleplayer : Using several stacks of burning items on the ground, she can blast from 0 to 120 sanity in mere seconds ! With burning items in her inventory, she can do a number of really cool things like warm up during winter, have a passive halo of light surrounding her so the 3 of her equip slots are free, or not get frozen by ice hounds of Deerclops at all. She can also kill Deerclops faster than any character can. All of this makes her overall the n°2 most able character in the ruins for me, after WX-78. Now Walani's stat perks are similar to Wolfgang and Wendy's sanity modifiers. They don't really do anything that matters at all. Just my 2 cents.
