Set Piece Suggestion: The Infamous Giant Spider on the Jungle Island Cliche

Recommended Posts

Not sure if anyone here remembers Gilligan's island or any kind of silly "stranded on a jungle island in the middle of the ocean" things from around that time period, but I remember seeing several instances of this "gag" or "theme" across different media and I think it'd be a really cool and perhaps quite dangerous homage to that if we had an island set piece that's set up in that sort of way.

From the edges, it looks like a perfectly normal jungle island, but the closer you get to the thick center of it, you start to see more and more skeletons (Maybe skeletons caught in a web or wrapped up in one for bonus theme points, or maybe the trees could just have web sort of dangling off the leaves, so all of the trees toward the center of the jungle have a chance of dropping a silk when chopped, which is extra incentive to not just burn the whole darn thing down) and of course, at the center of the island is a spider queen, perhaps protecting treasure of some sort. Alternatively, there could simply be a chest or treasure item at the center and the queen wont initially show her presence, but the moment you pick it up, she drops down nearby to scare the piss out of the player  :wilson_wink:

Or honestly, if there's an adventure mode that's SW specific, this could be a really awesome place to put one of the things you need to collect to advance (if that's going to still be a thing for the 'new' adventure mode, though I'm really hoping they change it up a bit)

In any case, the reason I ask for something like this is because I feel like if we had more stuff like this, really thematic and tension-building locations to find as we explore (and die to, of course!), it would really spice up and add a lot of fun to the game.  It certainly sounds exciting and fun to me! Just my thoughts. Let me know what you guys think!

(It's probably too much to ask for a dumb set piece but maybe they could even make a sort of web walls that go between trees and you'll get stuck to for a few seconds if you walk against them, but you could potentially hack them down with a machete too for a couple or 1 silk. Another idea is that the whole floor in the center of the jungle is covered with webbing like the dens have around them, making it fairly dangerous and thematic if you're being pursued.)

That's a good idea , but honestly , i will prefer an another monster at the center of this island , maybe a ice-island with a big polar bear. Just saying this because spider queen already exist and i 'd like to see more new creature. Polar bear make sense , he is ungry because the global warming destroy his homeland and he want to take is revenge against humans , haha

So what you're saying is, there would be a treasure chest which could have useful things/nothing in it and when triggered, would cause a Spider Queen to jump down and instantly want to murder a poor, terrified, new player who thought they could get away with free stuff.

I love it. We'd finally get another trap besides the volcano staff one in shipwrecked, hurrah!

Plus polar bears can swim. Fast.  (if they weren't terrifying enough)

I love this but would actually like a spider even more terrifying than the spider queen. Experienced players would most likely feel a little dissapointed to see a spider queen just roaming around there if they have killed thousands of them before, so adding a little bit of extra difficulty to the mob and changing its appearance would give it a fresher take. But, honestly, just having it rappel down out of nowhere would scare the bejeezus out of me and would definetely give it a new feature! :p

A giant Wandering Spider. Now that'd be absolutely terrifying.

I'd never want to pick a fight with big Ol' Wanderer.

I'd love to see more mobs in the game too, but I suggested the spider queen because it's both a large part of the reference and also, more importantly, something that's already in the game so the devs don't have to do quite as much work but I'm totally with you in wanting to see more unique monsters!  :encouragement:

I agree completely, I'd love to have it be some sort of special island spider queen of sorts, maybe it can actually leap at you or move even faster, but keep in mind for a moment that most of the island's center is covered with web, which will slow down all characters except for webber. That will make the fight a lot more difficult than it would be otherwise.

Plus, one of the major ways of easily taking down a spider queen wont be as viable in a dense forest (might just burn yourself to death and it'd also be a huge waste of silk as I mentioned before, if the trees are as I described.) that potentially has different web walls that you can get stuck to.

All in all, I'd love to see a redesign or some extra dangerousness to the spiderqueen for this set piece but I'd be okay with it if the challenge is mostly just the fact that there's web everywhere slowing you down and maybe just spiders coming down from trees.dangling depth dweller style. (Maybe that could even be what this variant of the spider queen is... Dangling depth dweller queen! Sounds silly though since we're not anywhere underground, I digress.) but keep in mind that there's already the added challenge of some of the spiders she spawns being the new poison spiders!

Technically , Spider island already exists in the game if your "lucky" enough to find one. I define a spider island as a relatively small-medium island that has a fuckload of spiders. These islands are really useful when you're webber or if you live near one but not on one. In the original DS, there were some biomes that spawn with tier 1 -  tier 2 dens. I experienced one recently and it wasn't pleasant as I discovered a farm there with the metal potato  thingy and regrettably made my base there.

If you wanna see a spider island, I think jacksepticeye's episode 2 or 3 of his DS let's play will show one with some boar houses. Useful if you're webber since you can loot meat. I think you can also start a war between multiple dens by befriending 2 spiders from separate dens and make spider A attack Spider B's den and/or vice versa. You can do this with a lot of dens and WATCH THE CHAOS UNFOLD if you're webber.
