[Discussion] What about a new way to get silk?

Recommended Posts

One thing I dislike about original DS is that silk is only dropped by spiders. Shipwrecked should add more ways to get it, especially because it's used for fishing rods

EDIT: I'm going to make my point more clear:

Silk becomes easy to get once spider dens reach the third stage. What in my opinion could be nice, is a way similiar to tumbleweeds to find silk. Something more common yet less pratical. My main suggestion falls on the third tier Jungle Trees having a chance for an additional drop (over the banana/egg/snake drop). Something rare (5-10%) that would make farming silk with that method time consuming less good, so that you are given a reason to not just stay in your base but go spider hunting.

like?

silk come from spider and some insect only, maybe we need other type of monster? :-)

How about Silkworms?

Like you may find islands that have special trees coverd in Silk from the worms and you can harvest them (maybe with a special tool) but if you dig them up you need to find another set of worms first to plant them (similar how you fertilize most plants with Manure).

And getting Worms could be a bit more difficult to discourage you to easily just farm up a lot of Trees (they are small tress so you can pick them upo like Saplings) because without worms they are worthless.

Or you make some sort of Silkfarm with the Worms similar to the Beebox but you need to feed them specific plants for them to produce silk similar how you need to plant seeds on farms but you need to feed them for a few days straight to get a few pieces of silk.

That's what I would love but without the ability to farm them, so that it doesn't discourage people from attacking (third tier) spider nests

Honey only comes from Bees. Shipwrecked should add more ways to get it. Tallbird Eggs only--

Sarcasm aside, I don't have a problem with Spiders being the sole source of Silk. It's not unlike many other resources in that regard. I just plant some Spider Eggs near (but not too close to) my facility and go on a stabbing spree each evening. It doesn't take too long to rack up a ton of Silk that way.

The only problem i see with that is getting your first Egg. While it can be easy to find 1 Den quickly waiting for it to grow to Level 3 also takes a while and you also should do some minor preperations before going toe to toe with it (Seashellarmor and at least 1 Antivenom just in case).

That's the reason i stick with Webber atm his Silkbeard is pretty usefull and being able to make Eggs yourself can mean that you can cover an entire Island in spiderwebs (what then is a big fudge you to hounds). Also the Starting Egg also helps getting your earlygame Silk alongside the beard (since there is really no reason to keep it because of the lack of cold).

I don't really have an issue with spiders being the only source of silk.  But it would be fun and interesting if Jungle Trees had a small chance each time they grow to be "infested with silk worms", with a web graphic in the branches.  When you cut it down it would provide the normal wood but drop (1 or maybe 2) silk instead of an egg or banana.

Just one more way to make the Shipwrecked experience a little more fun and different from RoG/Vanilla.

There is actually a silk that is called sea silk and it's made from clams maybe it would fit in shipwrecked what do you think?

From wikipedia : Sea silk is an extremely fine, rare, and valuable fabric that is made from the long silky filaments or byssus secreted by a gland in the foot of pen shells (in particular Pinna nobilis). The byssus is used by the clam to attach itself to the sea bed.

I like the idea of silk worms and the sea silk , why not ! Sometimes , if you have bad luck and dont find spiders on the discovered island , it can be an serious issue , especialy for making the bird trap and the net ( i always make a net for catch fireflies to make an miner hat ! and of course i can't play without the bird cage its to useful for many reason ^^ ).

Really ? I find silk to be one of the most plentiful resources in the game, I always have at least 3 full stacks in a chest at any given time.

:ambivalence: , in the first 20 days ? of course at day 45 i have tons of them , we are talking about new way to get silk at start if you didn't find spider nest.

if you don't find any spiders, then you probably didn't search your world far enough. you don't need much of silk in the beginning of a sw run anyway. silk is not as important as it was in the base game where you really had to farm up silk before winter hits, so you could make clothing items such as the breezy vest or winter hat.

in sw you mostly use your silk on fishing rods, bug nets or the new hats but they're cheap as heck. the game simply doesn't require as much silk to justify new types of creatures that would supply you with more silk.

and as you mentioned there's also webber in the game who would lose his main buff if there would be more means to get silk in the game.

I like how silk is a valuable item for the first season or two. Once you get halfway through a year, it is very easy to make a silk farm and have stockpiles ready for use whenever. I think one method of obtaining silk is fine.

I am liking the feedback and discussion here. And I agree silk being only produced by spiders is the best option. Getting silk is easy with farming spiders and destoying 3rd tier dens. The problem is, as mentioned:

But then yes, getting silk becomes easy (as Talavaj said, you could stack chests full of silk)

The point is that fishing rods should be early game-ish. You probably won't need to go fishing after you've set up farms or mussels sticks.

In fact, what i would like is not a completely new entity as the silk worms, but just an additional way to get those 1-2 silks you may need. i'm thinking something on the concept of tumbleweeds in RoG, possibly this:

spiders live in jungle trees. if there was a small chance of web from falling a jungle tree would be nice.

That way you have a more common but less practical way to gather silk, in opposition to tumbleweed-gathering in RoG.

It could be an additional drop (x5% chance) from chopping down 3rd tier jungle trees
