Are the drops random; or do certain actions increase the type of drop?

Nope, it's all random. As far as I know, anyway! (Someone please correct me if I'm wrong)

Basically, people are trying to get profit from high-value drops while they're still new and super-high value.  There was probably a similar rush of elegant backpack trades in some other area of the forums when they were added.  The guest-of-honors will still be high value in future updates to come, they're elegant, the highest rarity so far.
