GuyPerfect
I love the aesthetic and motif of Shipwrecked and think it works really well with the established Don't Starve game setup. What I find somewhat lacking, though, is the trademark theme of darkness and danger lurking around every corner. I think that's a cornerstone of what makes the game what it is, and I find it largely missing from Shipwrecked. Think of some of the things in the base game and Reign of Giants that constitute creepiness:Tentacles. Creepy.Big Tentacles. Creepier.Wormholes. Creepy. (Electric Isosceles, not so much.)Nightmare Fissures. Creepy.MacTusk and son. Creepy when you're not ready for them.Ghosts. What's not creepy about ghosts?Beardlords. Very creepy.Giants off in the distance. Very creepy. The nightmare phase in the ruins. The creepiest. All of the creepy stuff Shipwrecked has is just the minor and most common things from the base game:Insanity ambience. Admittedly creepy, though commonplace.Shadow Creatures. Creepy until you start farming them for Nightmare Fuel.Lureplants. Fair enough. I love these things.Tallbirds. Ya got me here.Hounds. These just seem out of place on the islands.???Profit!Honorable mention to Shadow Hands, which are kinda creepy, but instill a feeling of annoyance more than anything. So what can be done to increase the creepiness factor? Here's some ideas in another elegant-yet-simple bulleted list:Shadow Prime Apes in the light of a full moon? This might make jungles a tad too difficult, but then again, so do Werepigs, and there's nothing quite like a pig village in Shipwrecked.Big Octo, Wind Waker style. Obviously not by that name, but a sea-giant Kraken that shows up to spoil your plain sailing is... well, something they're probably already working on, but it doesn't hurt to suggest.Tentacles. Let's put 'em in the tidal marshes.Does MacTusk have a boat? Maybe the site of a shipwreck can occasionally spawn a ghost ship that hunts you down...Needs more caves, and that volcano sure looks like a good spot to do that. What do you guys think? Is Shipwrecked creepy enough? What can be done to make it creepier? DarkVexon
Maybe put Tentacles somewhere else. Marshes are crowded enough.caves have already been announced to be in volcanosI'm betting that most of the creepy stuff will have to do with that amusement park ride. Is Shipwrecked creepy enough? What can be done to make it creepier?Shadow Tentacles when insane at SEA! They come up and then try to smack your boat! We should have a huge Siphonophore (big creature made up tiny little ones). That could look very creepy if it fits the Don't Starve universe. It could traverse the open sea. Flups could become all black and hairy on a full moon, and their eye on top should be like a light, kind of like an anglerfish. That would be creepy. Maybe during a full moon, all neutral and hostile creatures become ghost-like and glowy, or have one part of them glow, like the previously mentioned Flup. Imagine a white Prime Ape, glowing in the dark, or a ghostly Spider. Not anything too scary, but it would be neat. Maybe while sailing at Night you could see Ghosts haunting the seas, the pirates who lost their lives during their adventure. t0panka
Hurricane season is creepy a lot IMHO but yeah i agree with you. I remember in original DS when i first entered caves i was really scared so i didnt explore there much and after some time when i find that there is second level - ruins - it was a big NO NO for me for long time. I was scared of that place like little kid. Hurricane season reminds me of this a little but i hope we get more of this vibe in SW! DuckBoy
It is much cheerier. I'm not sure I dislike it, though it is sometimes weird having a mix of shadow creature/cthulu and happy sea creatures going on. Flups already give me nightmares. Have you tried sailing in one direction until you reach 'the end'? I think some kind of dense fog (mind fog? magic fog? living shadow?) in patches in the deep sea that rotates the map or gets you lost at sea would be truly infuriating and would fit pretty well with the themes. GuyPerfect
There is a dense fog out there. It warps you to the opposite edge of the map when you sail into it. LightningYu
I can't agree, what Don't Starve made Don't Starve where this amazing Art-Style, which reminds an the classic Tim-Burton Movies. The Atmosphere/Darker Tone is only resulting because of the Setting which the original had, but these wouldn't fit the Shipwrecked Topic/Setting. I mean some ghostly-pirates wouldn't of course big deal, but what you implies would destroy in my opinion the charme & uniqueness which shipwrecked have compared to the Original. I think they should've really made this Game as an Standalone, now people want to mix this together... DreamApart
I don't think that SW is creepy. Actually I think they try to make it feel like a vacation. But, yes, that's why things like shadow creatures don't really fit well with the atmosphere.
