I seek Koala Knowleage!

Hello everyone,

So i'm here to ask a simple question: Is there a limit on how many Koalas you can collect without killing them ?

I'm doing a Koala Hall and for the size i'm making it i will need like 30+, i have aroud 7 currently alive and i find it really difficult to find new tracks nowadays.

Also the last i found was really far away from the spot where the other 7 are, can this mean that maybe, by staying farway from the Koala Hall i have bigger chance to get new tracks ?

Hoping that someone have tested out this before and can give me a clear answer! Much appreciated!

Best Regards,

Glhrmzz

I tried to set up a koalephant pen once, but only got to five. Part of the reason was that for a good while prior to that savefile getting corrupted, I couldn't find any tracks. So, since you have more, I'd say the whole track thing is just a coincidence. My experience with other save files is that tracks sometimes show in abundance and sometimes remain absent and that this is just random. Also, if you'd have RoG, I'd be surprised if having many koalephants would prohibit you from finding vargs.

Also, if its pen > gameplay, you could spawn them in.

Pfff testing, that's soo nineteen-seventy-glados. I looked at the source code:

The function "OnUpdate" checks for whether the player is far enough away from the last kill position.
if distance > TUNING.MIN_HUNT_DISTANCE then
    self:StartDirt()
end

Variable explanation:

MIN_HUNT_DISTANCE = 300, -- you can't find a new beast without being at least this far from the last one
MAX_DIRT_DISTANCE = 200, -- if you get this far away from your dirt pile, you probably aren't going to see it any time soon, so remove it and place a new one

Also, the cooldown restarts after each world load and beast death (though it looks like "beasts" are only the ones discovered in the current session). Existing cooldowns get resumed after save/load.

I conclude: Your issue is probably a combination of sticking in one place and playing in long sessions.

If you want to cheat ever so slightly, mark the following text: You can toggle the console log with CTRL + L, if it says "suspicious dirt placed", then a pile was generated.

Well Thanks for the replys so far. I will keep testing it and trying to be far far way from the zone and see what happens.

I was also a long period of time without going for any track and when i started to again after like 300 days i got 3 Vargs in a row. Was quite awesome, but yesterday i got my 7th koala and a Varga so my hope was up again!

Why cage them?

They're cute and make adorable snoring sounds.

They're a convenient source of manure right in your base without a beefalo hat.

You can stockpile them for future cave jerky and harvest them when you need them without any loss to spoilage.

Why would you cage them? What's the benefit?

Other than the easy access to meat and clothing material when you need it? Nothing. But a lot of people like koalephants as pets. They're adorable and make some of the cutest noises in the game. Their summer/winter variation also means you can have at least two distinguishable pets.

Also, using a wormhole that is far enough can be usefull as when you spawn at the exit, it generates one(if it is able)

So this is what i'm doing with the koalas. Still looks a little bit messi because i still didnt put enough walls to make them stay in the same place ;) That i will do in the end!

ps. This idea was from Mr. Ackzay

If these were real animals you'd get animal welfare after you, but this looks really nice. I reckon the distance is so that they'll essentially announce your arrival every time you walk through this corridor?

Yes. I'm used to people saying they will call PETA on me because of chester abuse (aggro tentacles with him to kill them easily) and because of stuff like this!

The distance is exacly for that is so they lock on me when i'm running in the middle. I still need to put some extra rocks so all them will be stactic basicly without moving at all so it looks even better (also so that they can't poop insie)
