absu206
I believe I fully understand the Deerclops' behavior. What I don't understand is how often he spawns. Is there anyone with a definite answer? I've already been doing research on the subject, but it seems like no one really knows. The threads I read regarding this topic were filled with wildly different experiences. Some people had seen him several winters in a row, while others had never encountered him for 150+ days. My last playthrough of the game(roughly a year ago) I had reached day 360 with no Deerclops sighting. I'm in the mood for some Don't Starve again, but I'm worried that this issue(bug?) might repeat itself. I could increase Deerclops to "more" in the custom settings, but what that does is not clear enough for me. I would rather use default settings if possible. UnionGaming
From what I've heard More makes DeercIops spawn every Winter, and Iots makes muItipIe spawn. No idea on the defauIt chances, though. Mobbstar
In my experience, it starts with 120% encounter chance the first winter and then drops to 0 until day 300 or so. Yes by 120 I mean 20% chance to encounter two deerclops. emerphish
I'm pretty sure that it basically works like a virtual coin toss near the middle of winter. I have been to day 300 and a got a deerclops for about half of those winters (in vanilla) Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/57822-deerclops-spawn-chanceno-rog/#findComment-672125 Share on other sites
grekon
It always spawns in the last few days of winter as long you stay in your base and wait for it to come. This applies to pretty much any other giant. For the Moose/Goose stay in your base at the beginning of spring. In other words, if you leave your base and don't come back in the last few days you will not encounter a giant. So depending on how much you want a specific giant plan ahead whether you want to stay or leave the base(The main reason why many do not encounter the Moose/Goose is because once the spring starts they all come out of their base to do stuff, and spend 1 or more days away from their structures). This method works for me all the time. Good luck and Don't Starve! absu206
Thanks everyone for the replies. Besides the last run I played where he never spawned at all, I have had Deerclops spawn a couple of times close to me, while I was far away from my base, and I am sure there were no structures nearby. Since reading this thread, his behavior made a lot more sense. https://www.reddit.com/r/dontstarve/comments/3ab2l6/where_does_deerclops_really_spawn/ The Deerclops is set to spawn at the latter part of Winter, and his spawn point is always near the player. Only after the growling stops and he fully spawns does he target the nearest structure to the player's location. grekon
@absu206, Well I won't say I can't be wrong, it's just that it always worked for me. 2 days ago I started a new save with WX-78 and once winter got late I stayed in my camp and once again deerclops came. As for the spawning it doesn't spawn that close to the player. After killing him I found a destroyed pig house 2 screens away. And the moment I saw him I went to kill him immediately, I was ready for him and standing in my camp. Anyways I don't think you have much choice but to test it out yourself and see. Hope this helps. absu206
In case I wasn't clear enough, I'm specifically talking about the vanilla version of Don't Starve. I'm not talking about Don't Starve Together or even Reign of Giants, although I have read some people having issues with giant spawns in RoG as well. ~Matt
When playing vanilla DS, I've had Deerclops on every winter, except some very rare times, in default settings. Don't know if it's RNG, however. The reddit thread you read says somewhere that snow level must be 0.2 in vanilla DS and RoG, from reading the code, I believe. absu206
Sorry. I should have explained better. When I said he spawns near the player, I meant within a couple screens distance. There have been times I've heard him growl, and then don't see him for a couple minutes because I went in the wrong direction from where he spawned. During that time he could be fighting other mobs or wrecking the player's base, which is I think where some of the confusion comes in regarding his behavior. I meant DS. It may have been because I have slain the giant before the actual last day of winter, but I don't know for sure. I just know that I've had two deerclops in a single DS (no RoG) winter. Several times. Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/57822-deerclops-spawn-chanceno-rog/#findComment-672463 Share on other sites

Even before RoG even came out I had Deerclops at least every other winter, when he didn't come two winters in a row. Didn't really change with RoG, except that it's replacing "Deerclops" with any giant and "winter" with any season Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/57822-deerclops-spawn-chanceno-rog/#findComment-672688 Share on other sites
absu206
Welp, I ended up starting a game with Deerclops set to "more", just in case. We'll see how this goes. I also set Krampus to "lots" because I've never encountered him believe it or not. In my view, they set the default naughtiness threshold for his spawning way too high. There are mods that tell you what your naughtiness currently is and at which value Krampus spawns. (Always On Status is my favourite) I think setting him to Lots just makes more Krampi come, instead of lowering required naughtiness. Actually, I just checked, and having Krampus set to lots definitely makes him quicker. It seems like 12-15 naughtiness points will spawn him. Its funny, he starts to hiss with only the first naughtiness point earned. It's crazy.
