Unforgiving Winter

Recommended Posts

I died on day 24. I was playing with Webber. I set the den near to me so I could get free food from spiders and silk for my breezy vest. I decided to head to the Treeguard Forest (they spawned from day 1,got no idea why) to set a small base so I could get both the walruses that were around the forest + beat the Deerclops and the hounds that were coming in about a day. I set the camp but I left my piggy bag with the food and I had my breezy vest on. When I finally had the camp going I had to eat. Sadly I forgot that I left the Bag at home so I could only get food from homeless spiders that were hanging around.I killed about 5 until the others chased me but I got away. I set another base away from the other cause spiders would chase me if I went back ( I also forgot to bring the thermal stone with me, with other words I left it at the camp). I had to stay at the second camp to stay warm. Suddenly "Barks" Yep, hounds were coming and I didn't have any protection also it was night time so the Treeguards were sleeping. I was running in a circle and the other spiders were taking care of some wolves but I still died. Spawned at the touch stone at the middle of nowhere. No food,No fire. I just gave up and died near a Beefalo and her child. Well played World.

Any tips so I can survive the winter longer?

As webber, your full length beard should provide a lot of inflation (less than wilson's beard, though). In winter, you should always carry your heat stone with you no matter what. Who knows what could happen. If you need a better weapon, go to swamps. It can be risky, but if you find tentacle spikes its worth it. Carry your armor with you at all times as well, it blocks a good amount of damage.

Short tip: Don't leave the items you need for winter at camp during winter.

Long tip: Sounds like you were doing pretty well overall, it wasn't a lack of ability that got you killed. But, I always put some torches, heat stones and tall bird eggs near my touchstone/meat effigies. When I do die, I just count the food and perishables as lost and rebuild my respawn points before returning for anything like the cane/armor etc lost in death.

No matter what character you're playing as, it's always a good idea to leave items near touchstones. Respawning in the middle of winter can be a death sentence, so always leave torches, grass and clothing near them. That way, when you respawn, you can drop the grass on the ground and ignite it for some emergency heat.

Leave items near touchstones.

Always carry a thermastone with you. Always.

Also, wood, grass and twigs.

Other then a stone and those mentioned items, you really don't need anything else. You can do pretty well with just a stone and bunny earmuffs for winter. It's really not that hard to get through. You just have to make sure you've made a stock of food before winter hits, such as several farms, berry bushes.... Whatever doesn't grow in winter.

Best advice I can give is to play winter - a lot. In the world customization, you can start a world in winter or try permanent winter. How will I survive without winter gear and a beard, you may wonder. Easy! I recommend watching people play King of Winter on YouTube (Bumbleborg's videos are a favourite of mine) and notice what they do. Once you get used to that kind of gameplay, normal winter feels like a child's play. It's a good idea to always have your key resources to be visible and in order. Combine armour and insulation whether you use a helmet with a vest or armour with a warm hat, so that you won't be caught by surprise. Consider that meat will be your primary food source, so hunt and use traps regularly. Preparing for winter should be a key priority in the beginning. Consider that if you have to run a stretch for walrus camps or for defense, you might be caught without resources, so have backups along the way and definitely have emergency gear and summer/winter clothing at the touchstones! Your own carelessness can kill you easier than winter, so stay assured that as long as you prepare and know how to handle winter, it really isn't a bad season.
