Some tips for newcomers.

Recommended Posts

Tbh People should play Don't Starve first to get basics down then when playing together they can learn the more interesting shizz of Don't Starve. Like it took me about 4-5 saves to realize how amazeballs the crock-pot is. I only recently also delved deeper in the caves having a second base there. Usually id just dip in and out with a miners hat. So OP Is right about the whole EXPLORE dealio.

The world is huge and you should explore it, its more fun that way.

yes. i agree with this one.

i suggest this to lot of new comer who i played with (including random people i met on the game).

some of them said, they tried, and they got bored right away or can't seem to progress the game.

and they need/enjoyed it more when i teach them in ingame.

which make me think, some people are just like that.

well, i tend to enjoyed while teaching and helping those newcomer to survive in the harsh world of dont starve.

so i dont really mind until now.

i find it quite/more challenging, when you have to put a burden of 3-4people in DS world, and tried to get them pass thro winter while in the same time teaching them how to do things

i think the most difficult thing are the shadow creatures causes by others or our own because they died too much and often

getting mob by terror & shadow crawl can be really dangerous.

you cannot just experience all this thing while playing with decent players or in single player

yes, but I'm sorry.

I can't help but to not agree if you put "dont ask where is the base, explore."

tips, guide, and helpful suggestion should consider always helps.

and asking where is the base or everyone is sometime more helpful than people join, exploring by them self and then died.

it will be funny, if after that, the host will say "where are you? is this the first time you play this?"

"yes. sorry"

"why didn't you said so?"

"we would help you if you told us, and we didn't even that far away from the portal"

"oh, i'm sorry. but i'm being told not to ask where is the base or any other common question because it would be annoying."

"i dont want to trouble you guys, so i followed the tips"

"well, now you trouble us by dyeing when you could survived"

sorry, but i think your way of thinking is best to play when on single player mode.

truly not try to offend you as a person

but perhaps we just different type of people

and i think i know why lot of people disagree with this 'ask the where is the base' being annoying. because when i host, i would guide them right away.

Think of it like passing some sort of initiation test, if "You're new" try to survive and find the base, you got 20 days, if you can survive, well you're pretty competent, we like you, you can stay, you earned your rite of passage.

Otherwise from the experiences I got from playing and giving scrublords instructions, (technically @fyrjefe) gave the instructions and  while I just derped around catching butterflies and ****. Ya scrublords tend to sit in base, stand around and look like a house decoration, Oh and eat food and burn parts of your house.

OMG YOU PEOPLE ARE RIDICULOUS!!!!  None of these posts are helpful advice.

I've said this in another response but seriously, if you're not going to add something useful or helpful dont bother responding.

Its advice take it or leave it.

[Edit] This went on for much longer but I realize I don't want to continue to add to this cycle of nonsense.

lololololol..

yeah. i know how it felt.

well, it can be annoying as ****. but hey. it is another experience that exclusively available on DST, not in DS.

XD

everytime someone join as a willow. my heart always goes "dag dig dug"..

"please dont burn it"

"please dont burn it"

"please dont burn it"

"please dont burn it"

OMG YOU PEOPLE ARE REDICULOUS!!!!  None of these posts are helpful advice.  This whole thread is derailed.  You're all arguing over what you "think" Im saying.  If you cant read and understand English, then heads up this thread isn't for you.  There is literally a page of responses arguing over the merits of exploring the map.  THATS HOW YOU PLAY!!!

I've said this in another response but seriously, if you're not going to add something useful or helpful dont bother responding.  Send me message, start another thread but please give advice.  Don't argue over the every single word in which the advice is given.  If you don't like my advice, DON'T FOLLOW IT.  But seriously all this nick picking over this word or that word is pointless.  Its driving the thread WAY off the mark.  I've tried being nice and responding to posts broadly and generally and you keep focusing and nick picking at this word or that.  Its old.  Stop.  Im trying to be helpful here.

oopss... someone is mad.

okay, i'm out.

but.. wel.. you know..

tbh. i'm trying to be helpful too..

but about that.. you know.. before i can help, i need to ask you something.

"umm.. where is your base?"

*run..*

>_<

you are a tad bit impulsive, should relax more often, y'know?

for me DST is a waste of money, becouse I started the client and clicked play and it says unable to connect to Kleis servers. I havent gotten the enter a email thingy to register or send a confirm mail, no nothing. I'm so disappointed.

It's the Klei servers. They have to handle all the dedicated server y'know.

Oh here's another tip.... read the other forum topics before making yours.  Seriously we dont need 10000 threads all asking when are we getting caves and RoG.  This has been answered a million times and a million and one doesn't change the answer.

The best server I've been on so far had the base right next to the spawn portal, within a screen away.

At the get go we split up, each gathering resources in different areas so we could forage berries and such to avoid starving by clinging together. We didn't build a base till day 7 or so, and we wound up building it right next to spawn.  We had rabbits, rocks, and wood close by so everything worked out fine.  Sure, food was a problem, but because one of us was usually on an adventure foraging the land the base supported everyone just fine.

I only needed help finding anything once, and that was for the all important Beefalo.  A player offered to guide me too it, and I later guided other players.  That let us fertilize grass and start a few farms - and the posts above are right, you can NEVER have enough grass and twigs in DST.

Once winter hits the host blocked new players from joining. Doesn't do to have 3 players store food during the fall, then have 4 players eating all that food during winter.  We barely had enough food, another mouth to feed would have killed us. When spring came again, and we could support new people, the host let people join again. After that I got tired and left the server, so I don't know what happened next.

So, from my experience, here is why you SHOULD show players you're base:

1. Newbies aren't all bad, and can tend house and stay on top of rabbit traps/twigs/grass quite nicely.

2. If the world still has enough resources, you are better off foraging alone than starving as a group.

3. When hounds start attacking, everyone who is alone will die (pigs don't cut it, but Abigail and forest fires are OP)

4. If you don't fight or argue with eachother, you can survive twice as long as you think you can.

Here is why you should NOT ASK to for a players base location, or at least not go to the base:

1. If the world still has enough resources, you are better off foraging alone than starving as a group.

2. It's early game and no-one HAS a base yet.

And here is when you should NOT show players your base:

1. The world is very large and showing someone you're base isn't practical, have them explore until they find enough landmarks that they can be given directions to you're base.

2. PVP is on.

3. You're about to kick them since you can't afford to feed extra mouths... but in this case 4 applies:

4. Don't let players join the game in the first place if you can't afford to take on a newbie (ie during winter and food stores are low).

3. When hounds start attacking, everyone who is alone will die (pigs don't cut it, but Abigail and forest fires are OP)

This will be addressed later when I feel like updating the beginning but this is FAR from true on all accounts.  But it is mentioned in a number already and definitely bears repeating, FOREST FIRES ARE NOT EFFECTIVE WEAPONS.  You are depleting valuable resources most of the time, and Im not talking about evergreens.

I know most people hate dying or failing the first time they play, but that's the main point of this game.

Tips:

Find a good spot to setup a base.

Roads.

Protection

Resources

Wormholes

Before settling down, you need to explore right?

Look out for these basic resources otw:

Stone

Twigs

Flint

Grass

Logs

Gold

Twigs and grass are must-haves to make torches. hoard tons of them (but of course not too much)

Flint are important for your tools.

Rest are for your science machine. and then alchemy engine.

You can craft science machines otw to learn some simple but impt recipes like backpacks to make collecting stuff nicer. And spear to defend yourself.

Use your hammer to destroy the science machine

Know what is sustainability. Its because of mankind who doesn't care what is sustainability that's why......

Nvm. If I give you more tips, and you will be OP.

Just kidding. Just try not to die.

I agree. To kill a hoard of hounds, imagine how many trees are needed to be burnt.

But yes, abigail is OP against hounds for 1st 100th day of survival

I don't want to be a downer, but, remember, unless you're with your friends, each time you mess up and do something stupid, and think "YEAH I CAN LEEROY JENKINS 2 TREEGUARDS, THIS WILL WORK!", you're gonna make everyone mad. Remember to work together, it's in the title.

Also, loners are boring.
