Question about reading guides

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I 'm posting here in order to have some of your feedbacks: should i see some guides, to survive longer?

I'm asking myself this because I'm not very good at this game (max of 15 days) and I'd like to improve, but also play with fun. Does reading guides remove this fun, of discovering new things, etc.?

Thanks a lot guys!

I think discovering it yourself is a huge part of the fun, but if your playing the game just to see how long you can survive, Guides are very helpful.

Or if you just don't know what to do next, use guides.

What I did was check out the Don't Starve Wiki. I didn't really read a guide yet. But I think reading the wiki helped me understand things much better, and I was able to figure out things I wanted to try, in order to survive longer. Helped me think in different ways, gave me different ideas etc.  Just gained more understanding is all. I wouldn't say it spoiled anything for me personally, but everyone is different.

Good luck with what you choose. Have fun!

Ok so i won't read guides!

To reiterate what orion said, if you have to look at 1 thing on the wiki, look at the crockpot recipes.  It would take a long time to find them yourself, and you'd probably waste a ton of food doing it.

As for guides, it would depend on the writer, but most will probably expose a LOT of info, possibly spoiling the joy of discovery.   If you have a lot of spare time, it'll be more fun to discover things yourself.   But if, like many, you have a job or classes or other time demands, you might not have the time to fully discover everything for yourself.

You might try limiting yourself to the wiki, and then once you've survived a year you can probably start reading guides and not have TOO much spoiled.

I found the guides useful, but for me they were more like minor tips that total spoilers.  Even when I read guides from very experienced player I find that some of what they suggest doesn't mesh with my observations and playstyle.  For example, a guide might suggest that a player to a, b, and c on their first day, while I ALWAYS do d and e first without fail.

For me, reading guides gave me some ideas on how to survive, without taking away the majority of the challenges.

Read guides.Pay a visit often at wiki.Learn what items are available.Learn how to defend from or fight varius creatures/bosses.Understand whats goin on with the seasons.Play with a plan for the unexpected in mind(for example while in winter, when u are far away from ur base, have with u clothes, heatstone, mats for fire, miner hat, food.u dont want to die hunted in the dark cold night).Calculate the hound waves and be ready for it.Watch some livestreams at twich with some guys playing DS 100days+...

You can play on *easier* modes by reducing the occurrence of hounds or changing the season settings. When you figure the basic things, you will survive until the second season.

You can use guides if you are stuck at one place. Most new players will not know how to make ash or charcoal without reading in a guide first.
