No more frog pond clusters?

Recommended Posts

Dear All,

SInce the most recent update to the DLwC, i haven't seen any maps with the instance of a large number of frog ponds are clusteed together near a path.  As this is almost always where I would set up camp (harvesting is way easier than rabits), I need to know if this is a quirk or if I need to change strategies.

If they have reduced the number of ponds that are likely to spawn, then that is bad news indeed. Though in the game I'm playing right now, I got really lucky and ended up with a giant cluster of ponds, more than 10 in a medium sized area.

Professor Membrane, do you mind telling me how you "harvest" frogs?

What I do personally, is set up a big cluster of Pig Houses about 1.5 screens away from the ponds. Then I smack a frog and lead the entire group to the pigs.

After getting loads of frog legs, I tend to use them to hire large numbers of pigs, or feed them to my bird to get eggs.

I think the case is just that you got unlucky with world gen spawn. You don't always get all the different kind of setpiece type things like a bunch of frogs next to eachother, or one of those plains areas that's full of beehives.

Frog Harvesting Technique:

I basically gather up something like 10-20 traps and lay them in circles around the ponds, then I hit a frog with a spear, and ever frog in the tri-state area runs after me, into the traps. Leave 1 spot in your inventor open so when you collect the legs they go to that, but you can immedietly put down the trap (no need to go through the annoying process of murderin them like bunnies or needing to have one frog per inventory spot, nope just, put them into he stack), wash, rinse, repeat, then turn into jerky and put into a fridge.

If you need health, combine with mushroom and 2 twigs for frogy bunwich, bam! +20 health.  Also you can fish the ponds.

That's a nice idea. :encouragement:

Making traps is too tedious for me though, I find it a lot easier to lure the frogs to my Pig Kingdom (hit one and they all chase you) and get them all killed in battle, then pick up the frog legs before the Pigs eat them.

The endless numbers of frog legs are invaluable to my current playthrough as Wigfrid.

Your method does seem better considering that traps take a lot of grass and twigs. I will have to try it sometime.

I tend to build my "Pig Kingdom" (usually 8-12 pig houses) about one and a half screens away from a cluster of frog ponds. Don't build them too close together or too far apart.

Anytime I want a bunch of meat, I just smack one frog with my walking cane, and pull the entire group of frogs to the Pig Kingdom. Eventually a frog will attack a pig and a gang war will start. With this method the pigs always win, all you have to do is collect the frog legs as they drop.

Having endless frog legs is amazing, they count as a "small meat" for everything, you can feed them to your bird to get eggs (which you can then give to the Pig King for gold), you can feed meat to literally every single pig on the map and still have plenty of frog legs to spare.

As Wigfrid I tend to need a lot of meat on standby, and this way I am literally overflowing with meat at all times of the year, except Winter when the frog ponds close. But at those times you could just eat your pigs. (Just kidding :friendly_wink: ).
