lights out tips

Willow is probably the best solution for this. Also Maxwell can do great in utter darkness, because of his natural sanity regent.

-Make sure to look at the map every 15 seconds to check your surroundings.

-twigs and grass are highly important, dig em up!

-make and alchemy engine to produce a backpack, and a shovel.

-caved --> lantern! (!)

Should do the trick :)

Willow isn't necessarily the best because it's still difficult to do much when her lighter is the only source of light. Buuuut, it does help.

 

If you did use Willow, it'd probably be best to coat your base camp with fireflies (catch them and then drop them one-by-one in your base; I think CTRL lets you drop items one-by-one from a stack? Or was it alt?) so that you can see even when you're only using the lighter. This would let you save a lot of fuel, actually, and combined with general lighter utility here makes her a solid choice. (Honestly you should probably firefly-coat your base as anyone)

 

Wendy wouldn't be half bad either because she loses less sanity at night, which is more relevant when it's night ALL THE TIME, plus when it's permanently night that means Abigail is always at her strongest.

 

Woodie's night-seeing beaver form could give you a good tool to explore/harvest en-masse, but it has it's usual drawbacks like it always does.

 

And Webber doesn't miss the pigs never coming out, and still has his friends the spiders, who will always be active in Lights Out and playing him means you never have to worry about the increased spider danger present in this mode.

 

...although, if you aren't making it past the first few days yet, Willow is the only one of these who you'll really notice a difference from! You should probably make it a priority to make a Lantern and restock it with lightbulbs from the caves. That shouldn't take much spelunking to do, so as long as a spider nest isn't right at the entrance, it'd be fairly safe.

 

Lantern is a hand item, but you can leave it turned on whilst it's sitting on the ground iirc, letting you continue to work. It's easier to refuel than the miner's hat (fireflies are limited) but takes a little more management. You should probably make a miner's hat too, though.

Oh yeah... I completely forgot you can refuel miner hats like that now.

 

Depending on what equipment slot is more important (Hats can be important for dealing with weather or sanity, weapon can be walking stick/working tool/offense) you'd probably just want to have both on hand. Lantern is arguably less flexible but it has more light range and stays on when you drop it.

 

Caves would be very important to you for stocking up on lightbulbs though, yeah. Icebox would also be very nice so you can have a stock that isn't expiring.

 

Caves aren't even all that scary when aboveground is already permanight...
